Harvard Profs Claim ‘Democracy is in Peril’ Under Trump
“Trump is purging government agencies like the Justice Department, the FBI, the IRS, and the military and packing them with loyalists”

I’m amazed that they’re still doing the whole ‘democracy’ thing after Trump won such a decisive victory.
The College Fix reports:
Harvard professors: Democracy is in ‘peril,’ so university must ‘take a stand’
A pair of Harvard government professors believe the university must “take a stand” against President Trump as “democracy is in greater peril today than at any time in modern U.S. history.”
Ryan Enos and Steven Levitsky write in The Crimson that Trump “ran an openly authoritarian campaign” last year, and is now making good on pledges to “prosecute his rivals, punish media critics, and deploy the military to repress protest.”
“The threat to democracy is unambiguous,” the professors say. “Like his authoritarian counterparts in Hungary, Russia, Turkey, and Venezuela, Trump is purging government agencies like the Justice Department, the FBI, the IRS, and the military and packing them with loyalists.”
Enos and Levitsky worry about the weaponization of government and how it’s “deployed against critics,” lawsuits generated by the administration, and that Trump’s pardons of January 6 “insurrectionists” give a “clear signal that violence by his supporters will be tolerated.”
The professors also say “there is mounting evidence” Trump supporters are “intimidating” non-MAGA Republicans into backing Trump and his policies.
Despite Harvard’s policy of institutional neutrality, which Enos and Levitsky say they support, the pair say the university “must speak out, clearly and forcefully” against Trump.
Harvard President Alan Garber should “give a high-profile speech defending democracy and condemning the administration’s assault on it” despite the recent “pile-on against elite universities,” Enos and Levitsky argue.
They add that Harvard still “retains considerable prestige,” and if the university community succumbs to “fear,” who will confront Trump’s dismantling of the Republic?
Similar sentiments have been expressed by academics and college communities almost endlessly since Trump’s election, and especially inauguration. Professors from Michigan State, Yale, and Penn State a few weeks ago recycled a 2024 piece in which they, like Enos and Levitsky, point out Trump’s (alleged) similarities to authoritarian leaders in Hungary, Turkey, and Venezuela.

How can democracy be in peril when we don’t have a democracy???Ivy league profs should know this.
If Democracy was in peril these asshats would keep their mouths shut and run for the hills. The fact that they are flapping their hums unimpeded is evidence that it is not in peril.
Its astounding tha they believ that a President who won both the electoral and popular votes, who is doing pretty much what he said he was told the electorate that he was going to do, is somehow imperiling Democracy.
I don’t think that word means what they think it means.
“They add that Harvard still “retains considerable prestige,”
Though by now, like Dr. Frankenstein, they have to sew together the least decayed parts of long-dead accolades to come up with a single, barely-viable example.
The problem is these professors don’t protest the party apparatchik, and nomenklatura, in government agencies, the weaponisation of government against Democrat enemies, permissiveness by Democrats towards Leftist violence, or Kamala and Walz’s openly authoritarian campaign that included statements to the effect that they would be rejecting the Constitution where it clashed with their agenda.
Thus their claim that democracy is in peril is actually Leftspeak for Democrat control of power is in peril since Democrats lost the election thanks to America voting for Trump and Republican candidates for the House and Senate. Apparently America voting wrong imperils democracy!
It’s called a straw man argument. We’re not a democracy. We’re a republic.
That is not correct. The USA is a democracy as well as a republic. Its founders repeatedly referred to it both ways.
There is nothing about the word “republic” that implies elections or the consent of the governed. All the republics the founders knew about were very much not democratic, and that is not what they intended for the USA.
No, they did not, moron! They were fearful of ‘democracy’.
You are wrong, moron. Read the linked articles below.
“Democracy” and “Republic” are not mutually exclusive terms.
The US is both a republic and a democracy.
Threats to Democracy:
– Massive nationwide election fraud
– Censorship
– Government controlled media
– Government controlled education system
– Government controlled judicial system
– Gender dysphoria perpetrated in schools
– Arresting concerned parents
– Arresting abortion protestors
– Incarceration for years without due process
– Open borders
– Intentionally released weaponized viruses
– Killer vaccines
– Persecution of Christians & Jews
– Non-persecution of violent crminals
– Federal raids on political opponents
– Misappropriation of tax dollars
– Funding terrorists
– DEI (racial discrimination)
– Decimation of the military
– Consorting with the enemy
– Funding anarchists and racist groups
– Revising history and undermining culture
– Orchestrated food shortages
– Corrupt judicial system
Dictatorship – Sustaining and subsidizing all of the above.
The average person is much more free under Trump–free to speak openly without fear of persecution; free from prosecution by the DOJ and the FBI based on political beliefs; free to practice religion without the FBI investigating us as terrorists–the list goes on and on–the professors, as usual, have their collective heads somewhere else
Morphological error. Democracy isn’t in peril. Democrats are.
“Muh democracy,” Blah, blah, blah. Yada, yada, yada.
There’s nothing so stupid as collegiate credentialed stupid. Believe me, I know: I worked at a major research university for 21 years.
Nothing says “Preserve Democracy” like censorship, using the state security apparatus against political opponents, and vast corruption using opaque government grift and graft, right?
The citizens chose Trump for President in a democratic election. Trump’s actions as president conform to his campaign promises so no one can say they didn’t know what he planned to do as president. Furthermore, the polls show that the majority of citizens support his actions. They are lying when they say he threatens democracy.
The Dems need to choose better candidates than Crooked Hillary, Obama the Liar, Quisling Joe and Kamala the Incompetent if they want to win the presidency again. Their next presidential candidate’s primary goal should be the will of the citizens, integrity and respect for our law and constitution.
