Trump Nominates Rep. Elise Stefanik for UN Ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump told The New York Post he picked Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) as his UN ambassador.

“I am honored to nominate Chairwoman Elise Stefanik to serve in my Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,” Trump told The Post. “Elise is an incredibly strong, tough, and smart America First fighter.”

Honestly, now is not the time to pick Republicans from the House or Senate, even if the seat is safe.

Stefanik’s 21st Congressional District looks like its a safe seat for Republicans. She won re-election on November 5, 62.5% to 37.5%, over Democrat Paula Collins.

Stefanik won her seat in 2014. She’s won all of her elections pretty easily, too.

“I am truly honored to earn President Trump’s nomination to serve in his Cabinet as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations,” Stefanik said. “During my conversation with President Trump, I shared how deeply humbled I am to accept his nomination and that I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate.”

Stefanik has made numerous headlines these past four years, especially with her questioning of Ivy League school presidents and their lack of protection for Jewish students.

“President Trump’s historic landslide election has given hope to the American people and is a reminder that brighter days are ahead — both at home and abroad,” Stefanik told The Post. “America continues to be the beacon of the world, but we expect and must demand that our friends and allies be strong partners in the peace we seek.”

More than likely Stefanik will be a fierce defender of Israel. That’s good at the UN since the organization has a disdain for Israel.

Seems like a step-down from being a member of Congress to working in a dirty toilet bowl

I absolutely agree that this is not the time to decrease the Republican membership in either chamber.

If it was the senate, you’d be absolutely right. The governor(ess) would appoint a temp senator until a special election. Our governor is a (D) who specifically hates Trump. In the less partisan past governors have been known to appoint a temp of the same party as the old incumbent. No chance of that here.

But if it’s house member the seat is merely empty until that special election.
At a 2/3 victory last cycle, this is a pretty safe seat.

Also, it occurs to me she doesn’t have to resign until she starts her new job. If the confirmation hearing drags out or NY Dems plan to illegally delay scheduling a special election doesn’t Trump have the option of posting a temp as interum UN ambassador?

Yes. At any given time, there are a dozen or more ‘acting’ ambassadors in the US. An ‘acting’ ambassador is substantively different than a recess appointment as not all the powers of the office are invested in an acting appointment. But honestly, I’m not sure if it really matters in that specific position.

I think it is a dumb move. There is not the margin in the House to even risk a weaker replacement losing in 2 years in a very blue state, if not now.

My first thought exactly. The last thing you want to do is to empty the legislative bench of its strongest MAGA supporters. There’s no upside to that. Trump should be commissioning new MAGA supporters into his government, not rearranging the existing chairs. This way, Trump gets to choose the “new employee” instead of some D/Rino governor or fickle district,.

While she would be an excellent UN amb., I wonder whether this will actually happen.

If the projections hold, GOP may have the House 220-215. But if a couple break the wrong way, it could well be 218-217. If she resigns, it would be 217-217 until her replacement is elected in a special election — which would undoubtedly be the most expensive congressional race in history, as control of Congress would be in the balance.

I suspect that if things are that close, PDT may not want to risk control of the House.

I largely agree with this. And/But, she won reelection by almost 20-points. If there’s a single ‘safe’ GOP seat in NY, it’s hers. Still, the razor-thin margin gives me anxiety.

Sure her district will probably elect a new Republican. But will they be given a MAGA choice, or just some random Rino?

Anthony Weiner is contemplating a comeback. Perhaps Trump should extend the olive branch, cross party lines, and nominate him. Wouldn’t blame him for not shaking hands though.

Watch out, UN, if she takes this position! She will slice and dice you ALL!

An alternate thought: Why not full court press the lame ducks? Keep them spinning so they don’t have an opportunity to sabotage the incoming administration? By vetting some candidates early, especially if they have little to no baggage, the distraction may be of strategic benefit.

Just a thought.

Hmm, this seems rather self-defeating for her career if the goal is to defund the UN, and remove it from American soil…

The job is political, so there is always an opportunity for her to succeed upwards. It’s not like she’s a pharma CEO.

Getting and keeping control of the House must be Priority One for Trump. Without the House Democrats will subvert his program. They will impeach him over nothing. Remember there are Republican traitors who will help them.

As for the UN, do we need it? The Third World wants a global government under the control of the UN so they can suck resources from the First World. Do Americans want a diminished standard of living to subsidize people thousands of miles away that they will never met and who hate the US? Trump needs to plan for the eventual withdrawal from the UN. The public must be educated that this is in America’s interest. It will take years and require a change in the MSM and academia. This is something for a Vance administration.

The UN is anti-West, anti-American and virulently anti-Israel. It has not keep the peace. I worked in the UN one summer. Disgusting place.

Why waste such a quality person as ambassador to such a crap organization as the United Nations?

henrybowman in reply to Romey. | November 11, 2024 at 3:28 pm

Yes, there’s that, too. Trump would be advised just to interview some quality people with leadership positions in John Birch. They all hate the UN with a passion.

sfharding in reply to Romey. | November 11, 2024 at 6:28 pm

What a useless job. Giving speeches for four years before a body which could not care less, will not heed the advice, and hates America. What a waste of one of our strongest MAGA supporters. We need Elise in a position to stick a knife in the Dems and the Rinos.

Does this indicate that Trump has learned nothing from his last debacle of appointments? She is a true MAGA soldier and to lose her over a worthless position makes no sense. The UN is about the corrupt nations of the world stealing all they can from us but we need her in the House to help Trump win over RINOs there to our side.

Obi Wan was wrong I have found a more wretched hive of scum and villainy and it is the UN
