Second Wave Of Blasts Hits Hezbollah Devices, Walkie Talkies And Other Gear Now Exploding
Israel’s YNET News: “According to reports from Lebanon, late Wednesday afternoon hand-held radios exploded in several areas of Beirut and southern Lebanon.”
After Tuesday’s apparent strike targeted hundreds of Hezbollah terrorists carrying pagers, a second wave of blasts have reportedly hit the terrorist group’s communication devices. Thousands of Hezbollah walkie talkies exploded across Lebanon, media report on Wednesday suggest.
At least 9 suspected terrorists were killed and hundreds other Hezbollah operatives inured in the second wave of blasts, initial reports indicate. “Lebanon’s health ministry says nine people have been killed and more than 300 are wounded in the walkie-talkie blasts across Lebanon this afternoon,” The Times of Israel reported.

Blasts were also reported in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah is preparing the ground for a wider offensive against Israel. “According to the reports, there are casualties in the Beirut suburb of Dahiyeht, and in Al-Azia and Sarfand in southern Lebanon. The explosions occurred in many houses, as well as in vehicles, according to local reports. A security official told the Reuters news agency that the hand-held radios that exploded Wednesday are different from the pagers that exploded on Tuesday,’ the Israeli news outlet added.

Unconfirmed news reports suggest that lithium batteries connected to solar energy systems were also hit by explosions, prompting Hezbollah to urge its terror operatives to throw away such equipment.
“Unofficial reports also claimed that Hezbollah told its members to dispose of devices containing a lithium battery or that are connected to the internet,” the Jerusalem Post reported. “Additional unconfirmed reports claimed that lithium batteries for solar energy storage had detonated and that some houses were on fire.”

Death toll from Tuesday’s pager blasts rise to 12
The terrorist death toll rose to 12 and around 2,800 were injured — many of them seriously — from exploding Hezbollah pagers across Lebanon. The blasts began later afternoon with “smoke coming from people’s pockets, before seeing small explosions that sounded like fireworks and gunshots,” BBC reported citing eyewitnesses.
Pager-related blasts were also reported in neighbouring Syria where Hezbollah has expanded its terrorist operation at Iran’s behest.

Switching to pager was Nasrallah’s idea
Replacing mobile phones with antiquated pagers was Hezbollah terror chief Hassan Nasrallah’s brilliant idea to ‘fly under the radar’ with a low-tech solution. Earlier this year, the terrorist group seems to have ordered 3000 pagers from Taiwan and distributed them among its operatives in Lebanon and Syria.

At least one of the Hezbollah pagers made its way to the Iranian ambassador in Lebanon, highlighting the close ties between terrorist group and Tehran. The Iranian envoy was lightly injured in Tuesday’s pager blast.

Although Hezbollah members have used pagers for years, the practice became more widespread after the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, warned in a speech in February that Israeli operatives could be using members’ cellphones to spy on them. He encouraged Hezbollah members to break or bury their phones.
As a result, thousands of rank-and-file members of Hezbollah — and not just fighters — switched to a new system of wireless paging devices, said Amer Al Sabaileh, a regional security expert and university professor based in Amman, Jordan. He said his information was based on extensive contacts in Lebanese political and security circles.

Significant numbers of Israeli mechanized units (APCs, MBTs, self-propelled artillery) are apparently marshaling at the Israel/Lebanon border. It appears things are about to kick off in a more….kinetic way, or at least Israel wants to give that impression.
Moments ago, in a very short national address, Netanyahu said: “We will return the residents of the north to their homes safely.” So, all indications are IDF is going to push some distance into Lebanon likely to create a kind of buffer-zone for those northern Israeli cities and towns. Where this ends is impossible to say. But, if I’m the Ayatollah right now, I’m not making any long-term vacation plans. The only thing that was really keeping Israel from hitting Iran directing in a sustained attack was the missiles Iranian proxies had in Gaza and southern Lebanon. Those Gaza missiles have largely been destroyed and it looks like the Hezbollah missiles are up next.

Retired telecom analyst here, and one who figured out the mechanics before the intrepid media did. The pagers and walkie talkies exploded because they were equipped with explosive charges and detonators (probably capacitors wired to the batteries), triggered by radio signals, likely from an Israeli satellite.
This allowed the targeting of terrorists with minimal bystander casualties. The reports (unverified so far) of exploding solar panels would have to depend on sabotaged electric meters, and only if equipped with radios to communicate with the utility. Thus, I remain skeptical of the solar panel side of things.
From what I have been able to deduce, I don’t think the vulnerability goes further than what I’ve mentioned, at least with respect to the sort of narrow targeting seen with the pagers and walkie talkies. Which is to say that I don’t think all the electronics in Lebanon are at risk, unless Israel’s operation is a) far more extensive than we know, and b) the Israelis are wanting to cause much more indiscriminate damage than they just did.
We shall see.

While not ‘all’ electronic devices have been tampered with the psychological effect of this successful operation to use pagers and walkie/talkies as delivery devices does cast suspension on every device. Sure probably not a toaster but how about a cell phone or lap top? Particularly if they were issued out by Hezbollah …or for that matter in Gaza by Hamas? UN relief agency folks and ‘journalists’ who collaborate may want to rethink any gifts of electronic devices as well.

The immediate problem for Hezbollah is that, despite their threats of retaliation, their leadership is now wounded, maimed and dead. Today’s brilliant follow up to yesterday’s incredible coup can only reinforce that the Israelis have completely undermined the terrorist internal communication system.
At the moment, the Israelis are collecting a decades worth of quiet human intelligence by watching the Lebanese hospitals, and keeping track of the casualties. It’s a treasure trove of information about who, what, where, and how Hezbollah is operating.
At the moment the Hezbollah terrorists don’t know who, among them, they can trust. They don’t know what equipment has been sabotaged. They will have a difficult time communicating and coordinating anything.
Iran and what is left of Hezbollah may lash out recklessly, but it will take them time to recover to pre-beeper organizational levels.

As a retired telecom analyst, I figured out how this was done before the intrepid media did. I think (and wrote yesterday, elsewhere) that the trigger message came from an Israeli satellite rather than Lebanon’s terrestrial cellular carriers, for two reasons:
1. Couldn’t be traced.
2. The explosions were simultaneous, and occurred in Damascus too.
If the ka-boom message had gone through terrestrial paging networks, neither of those conditions would have been true.
There are some reports, which don’t seem to be verified, that some solar panel arrays blew up too. If so, that probably would’ve been done through their electric meters if they were equipped with two-way radios. The communications links between the panels and the utility can be done via the powerlines themselves, or via wireless.
It will be interesting to see if anything else gets blown up. Thus far, the common element is two-way radio transmission + the insertion of an explosive and a detonator in the equipment. As I sit here writing, I cannot think of anything else that would fit the requirements and be targeted toward terrorists as opposed to more broadly. We shall see.
