California’s Climate Insanity: Gas Stoves Could Soon Come With Warning Labels
If California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs the measure, Newsom might find himself being grilled for the move should he proceed to explore presidential opportunities in 2028.
Legal Insurrection readers may recall a post I did earlier explaining the poor science behind policies designed to eliminate gas stoves.
One of the studies cited was published in Scientific American. We have been documenting the publication’s narrative science and agenda-driven conclusions.
The “study” involved 53 households, all in California.
This study was published on January 27, 2022. In February 2022, energy markets and public policy expert Roger Donway noted that one of the study’s authors indicated that replacing gas with electric stoves was not the solution.
After weeks of those scary headlines proliferating, the lead author of that study—in a comment buried deep in a story published February 10 in Popular Mechanics—said: Actually, replacing your perfectly fine gas stove is “not the right response at this time.”
“We don’t want people to go out and completely ditch a perfectly good gas stove,” lead author Eric Lebel said.
Wait, what?!
After weeks of reports that your gas stove was secretly hurting you and your family, we find out that you just need to ensure proper ventilation (which is true regardless of whether you use gas or electric, by the way).
Instead of focusing on serious issues, California’s politicians have decided that adding warning labels to gas stoves is the smart way to go.
Sponsored by Assemblymember Gail Pellerin, a Democrat from Santa Cruz, Assembly Bill 2513 would require gas stoves sold online or in stores in California to come with a label that warns of the dangers of certain air pollutants emitted from the appliances. Gov. Gavin Newsom has until the end of September to sign the bill into law.
In a legislative analysis of the bill, Pellerin cited ongoing health concerns with gas stoves that have led state and local governments around the country to consider regulating their use.
“The emissions from the use of gas stoves inside without the proper ventilation can lead to multiple health problems for Californians,” she said of the bill.
The bill will include phrasing for a warning label filled with scare language, which people generally ignore. Still, it will provide the optics that assure politicians they are doing something worthwhile.
If Pellerin’s legislation becomes law, it will require a label on gas stoves for sale in stores and online that says, “Gas stoves can release nitrogen dioxide, benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and other harmful pollutants into the air, which can be toxic to people and pets.” The label would also mention associated risks for breathing problems, suggest using a vent hood and say, “Young children, people with asthma, and people with heart or lung disease are especially vulnerable to the toxic effects of combustion pollutants.”
“I think this is just important for us to have transparency and inform consumers so they can make the decision that’s right for their family,” Pellerin says.
Similar bills were introduced in Illinois and New York, but unlike California’s version, lawmakers did not pass them out of the legislature.
The bill is being mocked for its triviality.
I was just thinking that we need more warning labels.

It will be interesting to see California Gov. Gavin Newsom sign the measure into law. If he does, Newsom might find himself grilled for the move should he proceed to explore presidential opportunities in 2028.

Grilled is right.
To me it just looks like another case of retards will be retards
Ha wait till they make people take a class on safe stove operation and you get your certificate to “operate” before you can buy one.
That is a possibility, yes. But combo will be limited to the purchase of one gas stove every 30 days? Will the stoves themselves be limited to a six burner capacity? Will black finish, or a bayonet lug on front of the stove turned it into an assault cooker?
What difference does it make? So few people cook anymore that I don’t see the threat of a stove. Girlfriend I had used to keep a giant box of spaghetti in her oven for the occasional meal but ate out most of the time.
“Newsom might find himself being grilled …”. He keeps embroiling himself in these things. And that is a frying. Shame. He just brings this stuff on himself.
I wonder if the warning labels will be a decal that you could remove, or if it will be like those annoying airbag decals that they put on the sun visors in cars: you can’t remove them.
X-Acto knives remedy a lot of idiocy.
Didn’t California make clothes irons have a warning “do not iron clothes while wearing”?
That wasn’t California. Those labels have been around for a lot of years and I think started with the importers (as no American company makes them anymore) when they were looking to write instructions to try warding off the product liability lawyers. In short, the Naderites.
In the words of the great Bill Engvall, “Here’s you sign.”
“your”
What will it take to cede California back to Mexico? Can;t we simply apologize for taking it and give it back?
California has warning labels on everything. I have seen countless items in the last 20 years that apparently only cause cancer in California. That’s why I don’t go to California, I don’t want to get cancer.
“Gas Stoves Could Soon Come With Warning Labels”
I’m pretty confident they already do.
They say: “WARNING: California has determined that this stove contains [throw a dart at the Periodic Table], which causes cancer in California.”
I’m looking forward to the day when they get rid of all forms of energy usage in California.
Subotai Bahadur
At this point manufacturers love these idiotic warning labels.
Because the left has gotten so insane with putting a freaking label on EVERYTHING, actually, truly dangerous things are not noticed in the sea of warning labels for idiotic stuff.
When EVERYTHING is labeled as ‘causing cancer’, then real warning labels on things that actually have a clear link to it are just lost in the shuffle.
I wish it was just warning labels!
Several California cities and counties have already passed legislation making natural gas appliances illegal in upcoming new construction.

Shoot, the entire state has already banned the sale of new gasoline powered lawn mowers, generators, chainsaws, weed eaters, etc.
I am heading to W.Virginia next month to look at houses.
While driving south on I-5 one sees the sign: “Leaving Oregon entering California resume devient behavior”
him being grilled sounds too good to be true
How about we brand warnings onto democrats foreheads?
Just a suggestion for some sanity in the world.
About half of them already do it for us. But it’s hair dye.
“Commie Dupe” or “Commie Liar”?
It’s funny that the proposed warning label doesn’t include the biggest threat a gas stove has to people, sticking your hand into the fire and getting burned. There also doesn’t seem to be a warning to not put your head into the oven and turn it on or turn all the burners on, closing the windows and lighting a candle up.
I’ll take this warning label as seriously as the mattress warning which removing is punishable by federal law.
The mattress tag law only bans removing the tag before sale – but the tags don’t say so. I’m sure that misleading wording was specified by some federal agency, which wanted to exaggerate its power.
Wheres the Warning labels for
hiring Leftists!!
As the article weakly noted, the emissions from the gas stove are not nearly as dangerous as the emissions from the frying pan – which don’t get better from an electric stove, and are apt to get worse if the slow response of the electric burns the food more often. But in any case, all it needs is a little ventilation.
