Biden Appointee at Federal Reserve With Questionable Academic Record Is Now Accused of Plagiarism

“never published a peer-reviewed paper on economics”

Another academic suspected of plagiarism. Who knew that was such a widespread problem?

From the Daily Wire:

Trouble At The Fed: Investigation Into Lisa Cook’s Academic Record Raises Questions

Lisa D. Cook is one of the world’s most powerful economists. She taught economics at Harvard University and Michigan State University and served on the Obama administration’s Council of Economic Advisers before being appointed, in 2022, to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, which controls the interest rates and money supply of the United States.

Despite her pedigree, questions have long persisted about her academic record. Her publication history is remarkably thin for a tenured professor, and her published work largely focuses on race activism rather than on rigorous, quantitative economics. Her nomination to the Fed required Vice President Kamala Harris to cast a tie-breaking vote; by contrast, her predecessor in the seat, Janet Yellen, now Treasury secretary, was confirmed unanimously.

The quality of her scholarship has also received criticism. Her most heralded work, 2014’s “Violence and Economic Activity: Evidence from African American Patents, 1870 to 1940,” examined the number of patents by black inventors in the past, concluding that the number plummeted in 1900 because of lynchings and discrimination. Other researchers soon discovered that the reason for the sudden drop in 1900 was that one of the databases Cook relied on stopped collecting data in that year. The true number of black patents, one subsequent study found, might be as much as 70 times greater than Cook’s figure, effectively debunking the study’s premise.

Cook also seems to have consistently inflated her own credentials. In 2022, investigative journalist Christopher Brunet pointed out that, despite billing herself as a macroeconomist, Cook had never published a peer-reviewed macroeconomics article and had misrepresented her publication history in her CV, claiming that she had published an article in the journal American Economic Review. In truth, the article was published in American Economic Review Papers and Proceedings, a less prestigious, non-peer-reviewed magazine.

Rs pounce again, (/sarc)

Black. Female. Teacher at harvard.

Nobody could see the red warning flags for DEI/CRT fraud??

smh

Affirmative incompetence, arrogance, there is a whole lot of further culling needed.

    dunce1239 in reply to smooth. | April 11, 2024 at 8:19 pm

She checked the most important box, “democrat”.

      AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to dunce1239. | April 12, 2024 at 3:57 pm

I thought the DIE/CRT crowd required multiple boxes checked due to Section 486, the Intersectionality Doctrine.

      Being Black isn’t enough.
      Being Female isn’t enough.
      Being Democrat is not enough.
Being a Professor at Harvard isn’t enough.

Too many loopholes in the individual qualifications.

All the DEI hires are getting shoved out now that DEI is political cancer. They were relatively safe as long as they could hide behind the shield or “that’s rassis” whenever their qualifications were questioned, but now that they actually have to compete… time to start inventing new things for your CV.

another DEI of fraud.

Qualifications are racist, I guess

Yet the financial talking heads went into frenzy when Stephen Moore was mentioned as a possible nominee to the FED Reserve.

Hmmm, I’ve never seen her and Paul Krugman together. Could this be Paul in blackface and drag?

DaveGinOly in reply to E Howard Hunt. | April 11, 2024 at 6:00 pm

It’s funny that the “drag” portion would be applauded, while the “blackface” component of the bit would be decried.

Just another inept black female awarded a position way above her level of competency because…racism. The country is being destroyed by this attitude.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | April 11, 2024 at 4:46 pm

Wow. This chick is really something … something pathetic. Here’s a little tidbit from the last “publication” she was part of, Economists tackle the challenges of a pandemic Economics at Work Published: 28 October 2020
Volume 55, pages 279–288, (2020)
, to give you a taste of her actual writing:

During and after the Great Recession, I was on the Obama-Biden Transition Team and at the White House at the Council of Economic Advisers from 2011 to 2012. Contributing analysis as an economist during the coronavirus recession has been at once harder than, easier than, and the same as
during the Great Recession.

It has been more difficult to provide economic analysis for at least a couple of reasons. First, the pandemic is the reason for the economic dislocation and slowdown in economic activity. Therefore, it governs economic policy responses. Most macroeconomists are not experts in health and, more specifically, epidemiology, and have likely never dealt with such a sudden stop in economic activity that has been so protracted.

Amazing … And this moron has all the elite “credentials” one could ask for – Oxford, Berkeley, Harvard, … and now she sits on the Fed. Of course, Valerie Jarret also had a seat on the Chicago Fed, so there’s that …

This society is on the real fast track to obliteration.

Thinking real hard and coming up blank… has any of the plagiarism mania of the past six months touched anybody white?

I do remember one, maybe two, black males getting spotlit… but this affliction seems practically indigenous to black females.

To all intensive purposes,* it’s the intellectual analog to monkeypox.

*Obligatory Rhode Island homage. PawSox rule! Wickid!

I used to live a half mile from McCoy Stadium. My family could walk down the road to an evening PawSox game after supper. In that intimate venue, my father’s booming “SWING” would piss off the visiting team’s hitters. They would turn around and scan the crowd, trying to ID the culprit!

I worked in Pawtucket for a year. I got to do the Penguin Plunge while I was living in Rhode Island. Good times … worst drivers in the world.

Mark Tessier-Lavigne, or as we call him, the anti-Claudine Gay. Because he was a white male devoid of woke teflon, he had to resign, for errors o publication(s) most likely made by a junior colleague.

It’s almost as if people in government and academia aren’t being hired on the basis of competence and accomplishment. Shocking.

What do you expect out of a typical Affirmative Action hire? When the manure hits the ventilator you need actual qualifications, not extra points added due to skin color.

inspectorudy | April 11, 2024 at 5:36 pm

Nothing to see here because she will be confirmed by all the Dems and the typical RINOS.

The other day this site noted the Biden administration trying to issue a rule to “to protect bureaucrats from being fired by a potential second Trump administration.”

The Daily Caller quoted a Biden official on the issue:

“Career federal employees deliver critical services for Americans in every community,” OPM Director Kiran Ahuja said in a press release. “This final rule honors our 2.2 million career civil servants, helping ensure that people are hired and fired based on merit and that they can carry out their duties based on their expertise and not political loyalty. The Biden-Harris Administration is deeply committed to the federal workforce, as these professionals are vital to our national security, our health, our economic prosperity, and much more.”

As proof of this “commitment,” Biden nominates this “highly qualified individual with great integrity.” (sarcasm off)

The Lone Stranger rides in and downthumbs every comment.
If you disagree, post a valid rebuttal of why you disagree. I don’t want to start an argument, I want to hear a proposal or an opinion.
That is how adults act.

DaveGinOly in reply to scooterjay. | April 11, 2024 at 6:27 pm

I was just dealing with someone in the comment section at another site. He posted something. I disagreed and told him why. He came back with “You’re wrong” and simply reiterated his original statement. No effort to make a counter-argument whatsoever. When someone disagrees with me, I want to know why. Most people who know me (I consider myself a knucklehead) would be surprised how often my opinion is changed by a good counter-argument. At least, I am often prompted to sharpen my own arguments when an unexpected counter-argument is encountered.

Seriously, are there any competent leftist black females? There don’t seem to be in highly visible positions.

MajorWood in reply to Eric R.. | April 12, 2024 at 10:57 pm

I was about to ask a similar question. I can’t think of a single black woman in the public eye who comes off in a positive way, except, those who have conservative views, who really can hold their own, almost like they got there by merit or sumptin.

Has anyone seen Janet Yellen lately? The Joe Biden of Treasury Secretaries?

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | April 11, 2024 at 10:52 pm

I don’t who’s worse, this chick or Biden’s appointees to the federal bench? You know, the ones who couldn’t answer the simplest questions from Senator John Kennedy, like “What is the definition of originalism?” and “Do you know what a Brady motion is?”

I don’t know if he asked any of them if they knew what a woman was … or if “women” even existed, outside of the fanciful dream world of the human mind. To leftists, before language, there was no such thing as a woman. ANyone could have babies with anyone else … until mean modern Man came around and created language and made up this useless classification of “women”, only so that they could make up “men” to have a patriarchy that would run things …

Everyone say it with me, dat’s waycist….

Installing long term Cultural Marxists, looks like that’s all she has to bring. Everything happens because racism.

Can’t anybody play this game?

Amazing cosmetic surgery.

For the record, between 1865 and 1950 there were about 3800 documented lynchings. That is the same number of deaths that blacks commit against other blacks, over any given recent 10 year stretch, in Baltimore alone. I think that a certain culture could use their time more productively than writing and yakking about lynchings.

>> First, the pandemic is the reason for the economic dislocation and slowdown in economic activity. <<

No, all of that was caused by the shutdown, by design. The actual pandemic killed about as many people as a typical bad flu year. There is a simple common reason for all the bad stuff that has happened in the last 4 years. It is called democrats.
