U.S. Syphilis Cases Surge to Highest Level in 70 Years

U.S. Syphilis Cases Surge to Highest Level in 70 Years

CDC reports 445 out of every 100,000 tested immigrants come up positive for syphilis. Meanwhile, the FDA is now allowing import of drugs for syphilis treatment…because American supplies are running low.

Last summer, doctors in Texas expressed concern that the illegal immigrants entering the nation as a result of Biden’s lax border control policies were not being tested for readily transmittable infectious diseases…like syphilis.

“CDC has comprehensive surveillance systems to track communicable diseases (diseases that can be transmitted to others) for people in the U.S.,” Bligh said. “However, CDC does not track diseases by immigration status.”

Between 2014 and 2019, approximately 445 out of every 100,000 tested immigrants and refugees were positive for some form of syphilis, per the CDC.

The CDC website states that “syphilis tests must be performed at the time of the immigration medical examination and at the laboratory stated in the panel physician agreement” — but some doctors are skeptical.

“They are not being tested for COVID as they come across [the border], much less for syphilis,” [James Hodges, M.D., an internist in Waco, Texas], told [Fox News contributor Dr. Marc Siegel].

…A spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Health Services told Fox News Digital on Thursday that they are unable to quantify the impact of immigration on reported syphilis cases in Texas.

Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the number of syphilis cases has surged to the highest level in more than seven decades.

A staggering 207,000 syphilis cases were reported in the US in 2022 — an 80% increase since 2018.

“The syphilis crisis in our country is unacceptable,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra declared in a press release on Tuesday, sounding the alarm over the “critical” public health crisis.

According to the CDC data, more than 170,000 syphilis cases were reported back in 1951. The number dropped dramatically after the widespread availability of antibiotics. By 1998, annual case numbers had dropped below 40,000, before creeping up again over the past two decades.

“In the United States, syphilis was close to elimination in the 1990s, so we know it’s possible to reverse this epidemic,” Dr. Jonathan Mermin, director of CDC’s National Center for HIV, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention, stated.

Public health officials assert it’s the lack of condom use and late screenings for syphilis that contribute to those numbers. And while that may be part of the problem, as the statistic cited above notes, 445 out of every 100,000 tested immigrants came up positive for syphilis.

The Daily Mail maps out the issue in its article on this subject:

The untreated disease can lead to very serious health effects. The good news: Antibiotics are still an effective treatment.

Symptoms appear within three to four weeks of an infection and are often not noticed or dismissed as mild abrasions or heat rash.

The disease can then enter a second stage, where the sore disappears and is replaced with a rash that can last for weeks.

Without treatment, patients run the risk of the disease spreading to the brain and the spinal cord which can cause complications including headaches, stroke and meningitis — or inflammation of the brain’s protective linings.

There is particular concern over the disease in pregnant women because the bacteria can infect the placenta and developing infant — causing complications including vision and hearing loss and low birthweight.

Treatment for the disease involves administering antibiotic injections to patients.

The bad news is that the supply of treatment for syphilis is so low now that we must import the drugs from other countries.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will temporarily allow the import of a syphilis drug made by France’s Laboratoires Delbert, the company said on Wednesday.

Laboratoires Delbert said it was coordinating with the health regulator to bring extencilline into the United States to address syphilis drug shortages, according to a letter on the FDA’s website.

Syphilis has long been the scourge of humans. New research shows that mankind has been forced to contend with syphilis-like diseases for the past 14,000 years.

To better understand the history of treponemal disease in the Americas, Verena Schuenemann and Kerttu Majander, archaeogeneticists at the University of Zurich in Switzerland who led the 2020 study, and their colleagues looked for signs of treponemal bacteria in bone specimens of human remains buried some 2,000 years ago on Brazil’s southern coast.

The researchers found that the T. pallidum genomes recovered from the bones were most similar to those of the modern subspecies that usually causes bejel — a disease that is not typically found in the Americas today. The ancient genomes were less similar to those of the strains usually associated with yaws or syphilis, which are both found in South America. This implies that the current distribution of T. pallidum subspecies differs from that of the past.

Further analysis of the genomes suggested that known T. pallidum lineages probably began to diversify as long as 14,000 years ago — 10,000 years earlier than previously suggested — and that modern strains evolved in the past 3,000. “It seems they have been accompanying us for a long time, which wasn’t expected,” says Schuenemann.

Living in the golden age of great medicine, with readily available drugs and containment of infectious diseases was nice. Biden’s border crisis has brought this era to an end.

I was curious how the MSM would cover this subject. A quick google search discovers that they’ve found the culprit for increased syphilis in the US: COVID…because of course. The USA Today article doesn’t even use the words ‘migration’ or ‘immigrant.’

Hmmmm. Random thoughts.

If there is a significant increase in communicable sexually transmitted diseases due to unchecked invasion of military aged males over our borders, then perhaps we need to reduce the epidemic by not permitting infected military aged male invaders to cross our borders.

Then we can get back to the days of near eradication of this disease.

Sorta like when we remove the counting of murders in Democratic Party controlled cities, we have a significant decrease in the statistics related to gun violence and murder.

Stop the activity that causes the problem, and we no longer have a problem.

Why allow any age, male or female??

      AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to smooth. | February 1, 2024 at 12:22 pm

I don’t believe in any illegal immigration. I am only pointing out that military age males are the ones sticking their dicks in anything that moves.

I try to keep my comments directed to the subject of the article without doing into a dissertation about all of the ills associated with the poor policies of this administration.

But the majority of the illegals coming into the country are military age males, and will eventually attack Americans at will, proven by the Venezuelan criminals in New York.

        Never surrender your arms.

True that. I’ve been armed since I was 14 years old.

I started using arms for offensive purposes when I joined the military at age 17.

After 29+ years of military service, I have yet to surrender arms.

I took my oath as a lifetime commitment.

I am wondering if China is enhancing STDs? Part of their unrestricted warfare?

MEH…Look how fast Monkeypox disappeared from the media airwaves once babies and dogs started to get it. When the statistics come out, it will be buried.

The folks opposed to open borders and in positions of power keep missing/refusing to attempt the lay up. The HoR majority should pass a stand alone bill that institutes the same sorts of health screening and quarantine protocols used at Ellis Island. Obviously these would be updated with modern technology.

This does a few important things. First if actually enacted it provides protection/mitigation of very real costs and harm created by communicable diseases. Second it highlights the cost burden for taxpayers in a direct way v the diffusion of these costs to local hospitals indirectly when these aliens are released into the Nation without intensive screening. Third when the woke lefties inevitably oppose this and call everyone ‘ists and isms’ for proposing it they lose the Ellis Island PR. Every time they try to invoke Ellis Island then we must make sure they get ‘hey we tried to do that but y’all rejected it’ shoved up their backside.

I’d assume it’s senior living centers. They don’t use protection.

Not sure why this was down voted b/c there have been outbreaks at some of these facilities. Some of those SR are still getting their swerve on.

It’s a well known fact in the medical industry that oldster homes can be absolute hotspots for STD outbreaks. Viagra is a wonder pill, apparently.

I guess we will just never know why this is happening until a Republican President is in office. Then we will know EXACTLY how it happened and how this is all Republicans fault.

US Infectious Disease doctors across the country are reporting an increase in other communicable diseases, including tuberculosis.

Don’t forget typhus, hoof and mouth disease, etc.

henrybowman in reply to WTPuck. | February 2, 2024 at 12:55 am

Those diseases are bad enough. But I hope to heaven that illegal immigrants coming over the border are not carrying stupidity, because as a country we can’t survive any more of that than is already epidemic in DC.

We are in the consequences phase of the invasion. Diseases are just the beginning. Much more to come unless this is reversed. Not stopped, but reversed.

Lucifer Morningstar | February 1, 2024 at 8:41 am

Who the heck is attempting to fool who here. Nobody but nobody is testing these illegal aliens for communicable diseases. Or any other diseases of concern that might be imported back into the United States. There are just too many illegals flooding across the border to do that. So this is just the beginning. Expect to see the reappearance and “surges” of diseases that were once eliminated from the United States. All courtesy of the Biden regimes immigration policy of unfettered and unregulated border crossing.

Reopen Ellis Island. The daily throughput is whatever it is 9-5. Put the applicants onto a cargo ship in the Harbor as they wait their turn.

Reopening Ellis Island is pointless without closing the borders.

However I need to ask for some help because apparently I’m really really stupid, or at least too stupid to understand what the Democrats hope to gain by flooding the country with illegals. This is not happening from neglect – it’s a willful plan… but WHY?

CommoChief in reply to Hodge. | February 1, 2024 at 10:52 am

Not really. Instead of catch and release and/or entertaining 90%+ BS asylum claims put them onto a cargo ship and sail to Ellis Island. Anchor that MFer and they can wait until their # is called, eating MRE and being required to STFU in the meantime. Naughty behaviour while waiting would be grounds for immediate repatriation to whatever their Nation of origin is and/or Mexico.

Require a Citizen sponsor (limit of one alien sponsorship per Citizen) to receive them and house them in their own home until asylum claim has been adjudicated. No release until payment in full made for all costs associated with transport, housing, feeding, processing, medical care is made. If Sponsor refuses then that applicant gets deported and that person loses their privilege to become a sponsor for a decade.

While this doesn’t close the border it does provide a meaningful deterrent as well as creating a very visible limiting principle; the # of individual US Citizens willing to put their $ where their mouth is.

Replacement theory. Cheap labor. Cloward-Piven strategy. Democrat voters. Increase in representation, which in turn will mean more (D)s in the HoR.

        Did I forget anything?

Hubris and up until recently, relatively cost free virtue signaling by cloistered do gooders in communities away from the border who get a dopamine hit or receive unearned praise/status for spending other people’s money.

I suspect that they are being bribed to try and wreak America, this many things cannot all happen at once on their own, the probability against this are astronomical. I think we are seeing organized treason.

I wonder who downvoted this. Did the poster say anything that was incorrect?

Children are the hardest hit up in north Texas children, including my grandchildren are getting bizarre aggressive flu /strep combos that no one is talking about
Both my grandchildren couldn’t walk for a few days, I believe we were lucky, some kids ended up in ICU intubated.

Has James Carville weighed in on this yet? He’s been running around claiming 5 different doctors told him Trump has syphilis. Google it.

Open borders biden has flooded american cities with millions of illegal aliens who haven’t been screened or tested for diseases ??

Lucifer Morningstar in reply to smooth. | February 1, 2024 at 11:45 am

Yep. That’s right. The Biden regime doesn’t require the illegal aliens to be screened for Covid or other communicable diseases like syphilis, tuberculosis. The numbers they are dealing with are just so large they cannot screen all of them or even a significant portion of them so the Biden regime has decided to not screen any of them. They’re simply packed into holding/detention centers where these diseases can easily spread amongst those being held, then processed, and the given papers and are released into the United States. So I suspect that the incidence of syphilis isn’t the only disease that’s increased. I’m sure that tuberculosis infections have increased. And that we’ll be seeing much higher incidence of measles, mumps and the like. And it’s only a matter of time before we see diseases like polio reappear in the United States as more and more people from across the world illegally enter the country through our porous southern border.

No entrar si tienes sífilis….por favor.

Immigrants — carrying the diseases that Americans won’t carry.

My wife is an R.N. at our local hospital. One of the gifts the illegal invaders bring in is drug-resistant T.B. That mung even scares nurses.

Import the third world, become the third world.

Massive increases in diseases like syphillis, tuberculoseous, leprosy. Boatloads of fentynal causing an overdose epdemic. Why its almost as if our very blood is being poisoned…

“…the supply of treatment for syphilis is so low now that we must import the drugs from other countries.”
