NYC Mayor Assures Harlem Residents That Empty Luxury Apartment Building Won’t House Illegal Migrants

“The development has sat empty for the past decade, until this week when neighbors noticed boxes of bunk beds being loaded in.”

A luxury apartment building in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City has been sitting vacant for years because the developers ran out of money. Recently, locals noticed furniture being moved into the building and immediately assumed that the city was planning to use the building to house illegal border crossers.

Someone in the Eric Adams administration must have heard the whispers on the wind because Adams himself showed up at a community meeting to assure residents that the property would only be used to house local families in need.

CBS News in New York reported:

Vacant luxury apartment building in Harlem will be used as shelter for long-term New York City families, mayor says

There was confusion and anger Thursday night from Harlem residents over a homeless shelter coming to the neighborhood.

CBS New York’s Ali Bauman was in the room for a community meeting when Mayor Eric Adams made a surprising change of course.

Harlem residents went looking for answers Thursday night about a once-luxury building on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.

The building was first marketed as a luxury doorman building. Condos include kitchens with granite countertops and marble bathrooms. Renderings show it even has an indoor swimming pool on its roof.

But records state its developers defaulted on loans.

The development has sat empty for the past decade, until this week when neighbors noticed boxes of bunk beds being loaded in.

“We were trying to find out what was going on, and we weren’t getting any answers to our questions,” Harlem resident Regina Smith said.

They learned City Hall was planning to turn the building into temporary housing for asylum seekers.

“No, I don’t agree with it turning into a sanctuary for asylum seekers knowing we have people right here that need the space,” said Tiffany Fulton, executive director of Silent Voices United Inc.

It’s very easy to understand why locals thought this was another ‘migrant’ shelter in the making. It really looks like the city got caught and quickly backtracked. Watch the video report below:

New York has serious problems. In addition to the migrant/shelter question, how does a city with an obvious lack of housing sit on a vacant property like this one for ten years?

If New York City mayor Eric Adams got up in public and promised that the empty building would NOT be used to house part of the foreign invading army . . . you can bet that within a few months they will be there.

They got what they voted for.

Wait until the illegals ‘migrate’ to Park Slope.

It’s about as blatant as the tanks at Waco, knocking down the buildings and injecting CS, all the while blaring, “This is not an assault!”

“a once-luxury building on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard.”

Oh the irony! A guy ejected from Congress, and convicted of… lying!

Milhouse in reply to henrybowman. | February 20, 2024 at 12:57 am

He was never ejected from Congress. The House merely voted not to seat him, and the Supreme Court said that was unconstitutional. His opponents tried to argue that since the vote not to seat him was more than two thirds, which was enough to expel him, it should simply be construed as a vote for expulsion, but the Court rejected that argument. It said if the House wanted to expel him it had to vote on such a motion. And it pointed out that there was good reason to believe such a motion would not have passed, since many members who voted not to seat him would have also voted not to expel him. That the court was right is evidenced by the fact that no expulsion vote was ever held.

    Third Amendment of the Constitution:

“No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.”

But that only applies to American Soldiers. Apparently, it doesn’t apply to the foreign invading army… They can have all the free housing and food they desire.

The USA is at war. Therefore quartering is allowed, if there’s a law ordering it. It’s not done only because there’s no need. Quartering stopped being a thing early in the 19th century. But if the legislature sees a need for it, it is free to make a law allowing it.

Also, providing free housing and food in public property is not quartering. Quartering means compelling private people to house soldiers in their homes. And that is allowed in wartime but not in peacetime.

I believe the mayor. What possible reason could he have to lie about it?

Don’t believe the city or Adams. Illegals will occupy this building one way or another.

And you can believe Adams. He’s not like those other politicians who lie. You can trust him to stand behind his words.

btw, Adams is a Democrat.

“You can trust him to stand behind his words.”

I trust him as far as I can spit tobacco, which isn’t very far. I finally had to give it up because I kept slobbering down my chin.

The building was first marketed as a luxury doorman building. Condos include kitchens with granite countertops and marble bathrooms. Renderings show it even has an indoor swimming pool on its roof.

That will all be destroyed, no matter which group it is that the city moves in there.

And everyone knows that Adams is lying like a banshee.

They learned City Hall was planning to turn the building into temporary housing for asylum seekers.

How did the city come to be in possession of this property? Had it been condemned? Did they use eminent domain and steal it? Is the city leasing it … out of what funds? Who is managing the property?

It’s probable that when the owners stopped paying their loans, they also stopped paying their property taxes.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to henrybowman. | February 17, 2024 at 2:13 pm

Sure … but the holders of the debt would pay the taxes rather than lose the whole property, I would think. And, even if not, I don’t think the city can just take over property because of tax liens. They can auction the property off to reclaim the tax debt but I don’t think they can just assume ownership and use of the property. I might be incorrect but I don’t think they can do that.

      AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to henrybowman. | February 17, 2024 at 2:16 pm

and we all know that the city isn’t required to pay property taxes.

BTW. After 10 years of being vacant, I can’t imagine what condition this building is in. You can’t leave a car on the street overnight without it being stripped. Vacant building? All the copper pipes and anything of value removed. Windows busted. Graffiti on every surface.

Or did the kind taxpayers continue to pay for the doorman and security for the building after all these years?

        ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to AF_Chief_Master_Sgt. | February 17, 2024 at 2:19 pm

All the copper pipes and anything of value removed. Windows busted. Graffiti on every surface.

If that were true then they couldn’t move anyone in there.

They showed the building in the news report with the article and the outside looked very nice and very clean and in perfect shape (assuming that was a real-time video of it).

          AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to ThePrimordialOrderedPair. | February 18, 2024 at 10:01 am

My comment was a generic description of what happens to vacant buildings in cities. My reference was not to this specific building, in that I stated “I can’t imagine what condition this building is in…” followed by the generic reference.

          Thanks

Since when do banshees lie? I thought none of the fair folk were capable of lying.

The Harlem voters need to understand and embrace the fact that they are part of a sanctuary city. Luxury housing for illegal immigrants in Harlem is a great way to show that they really stand behind that self-designation. Time for Harlem to step-up!

Eventually it will leak out that they really have no way of verifying citizenship for homeless living on the street in need of “assistance”.

Then a leftie judge will rule that is illegal to require citizenship verfication, like has already been done with public school system, other social services etc.

Adams would make a good doorman.

Conservative Beaner | February 17, 2024 at 1:06 pm

No illegals will live there.

The checks in the mail.

I promise I’ll respect you in the morning.

Liberal playbook: Say anything you need to for votes. It’s not like you have to deliver and besides it gives you a plank for the next cycle.

If Adams said it will not house illegals, it is going to be filled with illegals before the month is out.

They still haven’t yet gotten it gooder and harder enough to alter their voting practices.

Democrats, and most of their pets, are willing to endure a lot of pain so long as the main goal of the destruction of America is being carried out apace.

These people hate America far more than they care about themselves.

One thing is certain, if Adam said it it’s a freaking lie

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to Ironclaw. | February 17, 2024 at 2:20 pm

It’s really Trump’s fault. Perhaps Adams can get his grimy fingers on that $350 million that the judge just awarded.

It is incomprehensible that a proven liar thinks that anyone will believe them. Not one New Yorker will believe this liar. Of course, he knows this and lies anyway because it will be reported in the NYT that he promised that no homeless or illegals would occupy that building, but there will never be a followup story about how he lied.

Magical thinking.. I know, but Donald Trump could have turned it around.. I admit to bias.. but, hey,, it was a possibility….. Not now.. nope.. never gonna happen now. Adams is a liar,, and he is stupid.. a great combination.

Oops, too soon. Adams is waiting to see how many votes Trump gets from Harlem.

BigRosieGreenbaum | February 17, 2024 at 7:24 pm

Why did the those concerned citizens of Harlem, who needed the space, tolerate that unused luxury building all of this time? I guess Le Mayor decided that it was better to house them in a vacant building rather than a school or community center. So glad I am no longer being taxed for this b.s.

I wonder if they asked him nicely, would Donald J Trump take over the project and make it successful ?
oh wait !! never mind.

and all you New Yorkers … and esp. Harlem
be sure and vote D in Nov … get more of what your getting
