NYC Mayor Eric Adams Slams City Council for Pushing ‘Far-Left’ Agenda Over Progressive Policing and Crime Bills

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is taking shots at the city council after two progressive bills were advanced in the city that further handcuff the police. Adams is in a tough spot. He was elected on the idea that he would tackle the city’s crime problem, but he is surrounded by dedicated leftists.

New York Mayor Eric Adams blasted city council’s “far-left agenda” after it approved two controversial bills on Wednesday banning solitary confinement for inmates in jails and forcing police officers to report every street encounter, no matter how small.
The embattled mayor, a former NYPD captain, was staunchly opposed to both bills, whose passage he blamed on a “numerical minority” that is “controlling the narrative.”
“This assault on public safety is just wrong,” Adams told WABC radio host John Catsimatidis on his “Cats & Cosby Show” Wednesday night.
“The overwhelming number of people in the city — they support their police. They want their police to do public safety, and not filling out paperwork. That’s the same with the Department of Corrections,” Adams said.
The two bills were slammed by the city’s police and jail guard unions. They were passed Wednesday with a veto-proof majority, meaning they will likely become law.
Adams said that the council’s leftist contingent is “digging in deep” on progressive issues and refusing to budge.
“You have people who have a far-left agenda, who don’t believe in supporting police, and they’re just writing this legislation, and just handing it over to the council people,” he said.
The Washington Free Beacon notes that this is all happening as the city deals with an explosion in anti-Jewish hate crimes and the challenges presented by the increased flow of illegal border crossers:
Hate crimes in New York City, a vast majority of which are anti-Semitic, last month rose by 33 percent compared with the same period last year, CBS reported. That rise mirrors a national trend, with the Anti-Defamation League reporting in October that anti-Semitic incidents rose by 400 percent following Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel. While overall crime in the city has slightly decreased compared with last year, transit crimes, felony assaults, and car thefts have all jumped up…
City council members are not the only Democrats with whom Adams is feuding. The mayor has repeatedly criticized the Biden administration for its handling of a record-shattering influx of illegal immigrants, most of whom have gone to New York. The crisis, which Adams said would “destroy New York City,” worsened after the administration in May allowed border security measure Title 42 to lapse.
“We already hit the bursting point,” Adams told Catsimatidis. “The flow has overflowed us.”
Like many American cities, New York is being held prisoner by progressives who control the majority of the levers of power. Nothing is going to change until these people are replaced. It’s difficult to see how that happens any time soon.

Wait. I thought the NY City Council just reflexively enacted whatever the Mayor of the Day told them to. Isn’t that how Bloomberg and other mayors ended up dictating to people what and how much they could eat and drink? Wasn’t that how Adams himself was trying to turn the city vegan or expanding the consumption of plant-based “meat,” or some such nonsense? Reigning over the city using the Obama pen-and-a-phone model of Socialist ruling and not governing, right? Now he’s having to actually answer to the citizens and voters who were hoodwinked into thinking he would do positive things for the city instead of the crap being done to them, and there’s nobody else to blame.
