Gavin Newsom Criticizes Effort to Get Trump Taken Off the Ballot in California

California Governor Gavin Newsom is blasting the effort by some in his state to take Donald Trump off the ballot. What’s happening in Colorado is clearly a test run for the left. Will anyone be surprised if more states try to do this?Who knew Gavin Newsom would be the first major Democrat to speak out against this?Politico reports:

Newsom pans efforts to block Trump from California ballotGov. Gavin Newsom has a message for California politicians eager to follow Colorado’s lead to block former President Donald Trump from the ballot: Cool your jets. The Colorado Supreme Court ruled this week that Trump was ineligible to run for president because he fomented the Jan. 6 insurrection. The decision breathed life into efforts across the country, including in California, to disqualify the former president for violating the 14th Amendment. But in a Friday afternoon statement, Newsom telegraphed to his fellow California Democrats not to get ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court, which will almost certainly be the final arbiter of that decision.“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom said, “but in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”His remarks threw cold water on numerous attempts by elected officials to seize on the Colorado decision.

Jerry Wilson of RedState suggests Newsom is just assuming that the Colorado decision won’t stand:

Newsom’s comment comes after a December 20 letter from California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, following the Colorado Supreme Court decision to remove Trump from the Colorado 2024 primary ballot. In Kounakakis’ letter, she urged Weber to:

….explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot.

Kounalakis emphasized the need for haste on Weber’s part, as the announcement by Weber’s office of candidates qualified for the ballot is December 28.

Newsom’s communication clearly signals that he expects the Colorado Supreme Court decision to be overturned by the United States Supreme Court.

This is probably correct.

Democrats are playing a dangerous game with the country.
