Gavin Newsom Criticizes Effort to Get Trump Taken Off the Ballot in California

California Governor Gavin Newsom is blasting the effort by some in his state to take Donald Trump off the ballot. What’s happening in Colorado is clearly a test run for the left. Will anyone be surprised if more states try to do this?

Who knew Gavin Newsom would be the first major Democrat to speak out against this?

Politico reports:

Newsom pans efforts to block Trump from California ballot

Gov. Gavin Newsom has a message for California politicians eager to follow Colorado’s lead to block former President Donald Trump from the ballot: Cool your jets.

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled this week that Trump was ineligible to run for president because he fomented the Jan. 6 insurrection. The decision breathed life into efforts across the country, including in California, to disqualify the former president for violating the 14th Amendment.

But in a Friday afternoon statement, Newsom telegraphed to his fellow California Democrats not to get ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court, which will almost certainly be the final arbiter of that decision.

“There is no doubt that Donald Trump is a threat to our liberties and even to our democracy,” Newsom said, “but in California, we defeat candidates at the polls. Everything else is a political distraction.”

His remarks threw cold water on numerous attempts by elected officials to seize on the Colorado decision.

Jerry Wilson of RedState suggests Newsom is just assuming that the Colorado decision won’t stand:

Newsom’s comment comes after a December 20 letter from California Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis to California Secretary of State Shirley Weber, following the Colorado Supreme Court decision to remove Trump from the Colorado 2024 primary ballot. In Kounakakis’ letter, she urged Weber to:

….explore every legal option to remove former President Donald Trump from California’s 2024 presidential primary ballot.

Kounalakis emphasized the need for haste on Weber’s part, as the announcement by Weber’s office of candidates qualified for the ballot is December 28.

Newsom’s communication clearly signals that he expects the Colorado Supreme Court decision to be overturned by the United States Supreme Court.

This is probably correct.

Democrats are playing a dangerous game with the country.

It’s the usual game. Clearly Newsome is the moderate, middle-of-the-road, “just right” candidate in contrast to the radical extremes of Trump and Biden.

I regret that I have but two eyes to roll.

He knows that the Dems in California have created a one party system through legal and illegal means. They have the means to win even when they lose.

Newsom cares only for Newsom. Trump hasn’t any chance of winning in California, so this demonstration of faux statesmanship is intended to broaden Newsom’s appeal in a national election.

Newsom isn’t smart. He barely survived 4 years at santa clara university. People who have worked with newsom have said he doesn’t like to read things, and might have reading disability. He operates by gut instinct, sticks finger in the air to determine which way the wind is blowing. Former CA Gov Brown had little respect for then Lt Gov newsom, and rarely involved newsom in policy decisions. He is nancy’s nephew, and his campaign was bankrolled by 8 wealthy CA families. He has been failing upward all his life.

Dangerous game…and they are getting ahead of the curve in this acknowledgment of their actions. Newsom and the rest know that retribution will be “ugly”.

That Democrats fall for fake politicians that pretend to be what they aren’t is not a surprise. Is it any different than one hoax after another. They should change the name to Dup(e)ocratic Party.

“in California, we defeat candidates at the polls.”
Or — more accurately — at the signature validation gantlets well before the election.

Governor Hair Gel likely realizes in that vestigial reptilian brain of his that if Pudding Cup drops out (voluntarily or otherwise) and “THE CALL!!!” comes in for him to accept the nomination, he could very have to deal with attempts to pull him off the ballot in many Red states.

Well, sure. He figures having Trump on the ballot will help motivate Democrats to vote.

Not his fault he hasn’t thought through the question of for whom

After all, California’s electoral votes are already spoken for, and it doesn’t matter whether the Democrat nominee wins by one vote, or all of them.

in California, we defeat candidates at the polls

Hypocrite. California isn’t above changing ballot law to ensure that defeat.

everything this guy ponders is divided by the political calculation

Democrats keep saying “threat to our democracy” when they really mean ‘threat to *our* kleptocracy’.

Newsom is a tyrannical narcissist who can be counted on to say anything he thinks will benefit him.

Wow, for a minute there I thought Newsom was going to say something intelligent like the judiciary should not be weaponized to penalize the opposition party. My bad. Turns out he only wants to wait to see if the Supreme COurt weighs in to settle the matter. If they don’t he’s probably full steam ahead to block Trump from California voters.

In California, they’ve manipulated their elections into a sham. They don’t NEED to keep Trump off the ballot and Newsom can appear magnanimous without worry.
