Rep. Matt Gaetz Introduces Motion to Remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House

McCarthy: “Bring it on.”

Rep. Matt Gaetz introduced a motion to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House:

GAETZ: “Our DHS funding bill requires E-verify. And then hours later, after we pass that, the speaker warrants to vote for a continuing resolution that didn’t include E-verify. Retreat is never a strategy to win anything. So, Mr. Speaker, just tell us, just tell us what was in the secret Ukraine side deal? What commitments were made to President Biden to continue the spending of President Biden in exchange for doing things for President Biden? It is becoming increasingly clear who the speaker of the House already works for, and it’s not the Republican conference. Mr. Speaker, I would ask that these questions be answered soon because there may be other votes coming today or later this week that could be implicated by the answers to these questions. Members of the Republican Party might vote differently on a motion to vacate if they heard what the speaker had to share with us about his secret side deal with Joe Biden on Ukraine.”

He continued: “Mr. Speaker, pursuant to clause two A1 of Rule nine, I rise to give notice of my intent to raise a question of the privileges of House. Declaring the office Speaker of the House of Representatives to be vacant. Resolved that the office of Speaker of the House Representatives is hereby declared to be vacant.”

Gaetz has never been happy about McCarthy winning the leadership role. Remember how long it took for McCarthy to receive the votes?

Gaetz has threatened to file the motion for weeks.

Gaetz is probably going to make Hakeem Jeffries Speaker at this rate

Would it make any differents, except for which Washington politicians pockets get lined?

Nathan Shiba in reply to thad_the_man. | October 2, 2023 at 9:09 pm

Yes, of course it would. Do you think any of Comer’s work could be done if we had a Democrat as the speaker?

Gaetz doesn’t give to figs abouit anyone or anything other than himself.

If the GOP caucus cannot find one decent person to vote for as Speaker (it could be anyone – maybe bring Newt back!) that is not Gaetz’s fault. McCarthy is pond scum. On the truly important issues – the money – McCarthy does the Dems’ bidding, helping to put the final nail in America’s coffin. McCarthy has to go.

To them, that’s the only difference that matters.

      Concise in reply to thad_the_man. | October 3, 2023 at 8:36 am

Not much. Every democrat agenda item and more gets fully funded, including the lawfare.
And the Biden mass population replacement. And After 45 days? Well, they’ll do nothing. Another non shut down. shut down panic. Followed by an extension of the CR after a “compromise” that fully funds ever democrat agenda item.

Of course it would make a difference! How could anyone possibly even ask this question without including a sarcasm tag?

Ironclaw in reply to geronl. | October 3, 2023 at 12:04 am

Could you see any difference in how things are run there? McCarthy’s as much the enemy as Jeffrey’s is

Ghostrider in reply to Ironclaw. | October 3, 2023 at 1:41 pm

No, no, no. Hakeem Jeffries is the pre-ordained, second coming of Barack Obama. HJ is pure evil and dictatorial. He also runs circles around McCarthy.

gonzotx in reply to geronl. | October 3, 2023 at 3:38 am

    He already is

    2smartforlibs in reply to geronl. | October 3, 2023 at 10:04 am

Doubtful since the GOP isn’t going to support him However its time these RINOs had their feet held to the fire.

Watch for 4 moderate R’s to switch to D, then Jeffries becomes Speaker.

Gaetz working with Democrats to remove McCarthy because McCarthy (checks notes) worked with Democrats to pass the CR. Kabuki theatre.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to RNJD. | October 2, 2023 at 9:17 pm

That’s one of the dumbest talking points the GOPe has put out. Gaetz is not working with any Democrats.

McCarthy did the Democrats’ bidding (i.e. anti-American) on the debt ceiling and now the CR – and he’ll do worse on the eventual budget if he’s allowed.

Really? How’s he gonna get rid of McCarthy without any Democratic votes? Several Republicans have already called out Gaetz and said they wouldn’t vote to remove. This is just one more performative act of jackassery by Gaetz. .

ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to RNJD. | October 2, 2023 at 9:50 pm

Gaetz isn’t looking to get McCarthy out. He’s looking to make it clear that McCarthy sits at the pleasure of the Dems – which is true.

McCarthy is a backstabbing d-bag who I wouldn’t trust to walk my dog.

Yes, of course it would. Do you think any of Comer’s work could be done if we had a Democrat as the speaker?

The institutional Republicans have not been an opposition party to the Democrats. Opposing Democrats, defeating Democrats has been the farthest thing from their thoughts. And to be honest enabling the policies wanted by their voter base has been too. What I suspect we are seeing is an analog to the dissolution of the Whig Party in the 1850’s that enabled the rise of the Republicans at a very critical point in our history. Mind you, the rise of a real opposition party, and its nature, cannot be guaranteed. Things are going to be unpleasant and it cannot be avoided.

McCarthy is a real lowlife. I think he’s even worse than Paul Ryan or the Weeping Boner, which is no easy feat.

I hope that Gaetz’s motion passes and McCarthy is sent packing. McCarthy is worse than McConnell. A lying sack of s*** who seems to care about nothing other than his personal reign as Speaker. He sort came up out of nowhere and needs to be sent back there tout de suite.

Gaetz is like the guy standing in the streets of NYC and yelling that he is fed up with the way the city is being run and he is going to stop it. If ever there was a Don Quixote it is Gaetz. Of course, watching the crap going on in DC makes us all ill but it can’t be stopped by one vote without a major change. The Rs have a 5-vote majority and some of the Rs are really independents or even Dem lite. He needs to get off of his grandstand and work within the system in place to get as much as he can get done. McCarthy is a DC animal that’s why I have said he will NEVER work with Trump if he is elected. All Speakers, R&D, think they are one step below the POTUS and they don’t give a rat’s ass about the rank and file. Think about all of them, Pelosi, Ryan, Bohner, Gingrich, et al.

I agree that McCarthy would likely not work with Trump, but, if the Republicans gained more House seats, would McCarthy still be Speaker?

wendybar in reply to inspectorudy. | October 3, 2023 at 5:14 am

So go along to get along, like the Republicans always do, which is why we are in the mess we are in today.??

Concise in reply to wendybar. | October 3, 2023 at 8:43 am

Well obviously since the Constitution was amended to remove the power of the purse from the House. Wait a second.. that’s not right. So I don’t know what to say other than that the republicans in the House support and want to fund every Biden agenda item, All the lawfare and population replacement. And country ending debt. I only say that because they are.

Maybe if we keep trying to the same stupid crap over again this time it’ll work?

Like it or not, in order to get the votes to be Speaker, McCarthy made explicit promises to Gaetz and his crew, and has violated pretty much all of them (and the few he HAS fulfilled were the absolute bare minimum he could possibly have done).

Which is exactly why Gaetz demanded the single person ability to motion to vacate the chair. Because he suspected that McCarthy was going to refuse to honor his promises.

McCarthy has decided that he’s willing to count on the Democrats to keep him in the Speaker chair. Which says a whole lot about McCarthy.

AF_Chief_Master_Sgt | October 2, 2023 at 10:51 pm

This is my shocked face: 😮

Who would have thought that democrats and republicans were different sides of the same coin, bought and paid for by global corporations and rogue governments for profit.

Why would any Republican voter ever believe that the Republican Party represented them?

And oh by the way, the actual trigger for this, is that apparently McCarthy got the Republicans to pass his precious continuing resolution without Ukraine funding, but made a secret side deal with the Democrats to put up a vote for Ukraine funding immediately this week.

And a lot of Republicans are pissed about this.

McCarthy promised to end the practice of using single, large omnibus bills to fund the entire government. To win the speakership, he agreed to return to individual funding bills for each segment of government. This was how the budget was done historically. Yet McCarthy failed to deliver on this promise or even to explain why not.

The real answer is probably that McCarthy and most Republicans are quite content to go along with the Swamp to avoid major cuts. The current practice avoids accountability in favor of a crisis by design to keep the government running with a last-second deal that offers ample opportunity for lots of budget goodies to be inserted.

McCarthy likely never had any intention of keeping that promise. He has the support of a majority of Republicans who also do not want him to keep that promise. Hence we see the effort to vilify Gaetz in order to shut him up.

    ThePrimordialOrderedPair in reply to kelly_3406. | October 3, 2023 at 3:27 am

McCarthy also promised that there would be at least 72 hours to read each bill before voting -= another broken promise.

To top it all off, everyone knew this deadline was coming and none of this work was done but McCarthy sent everyone home for a month and a half vacation (like they were high schoolers on summer break) anyway. The House shoudl have never recessed. THey had work to do and should have done it. But McCarthy wanted top run things up to the deadline, then cry about not being able to shut the government (lest the GOP get all blamed by ,… McCarthy and dirtbags liek him) and so force through a Traitor Joe level of spending to keep all of the dems happy with their dismantling and destruction of this nation.

McCarthy is the lowest of lowlife scum. He is really a democrat at heart. He’d sell his own mother for one minute of TV time. California …

The only person who had the power to prevent the conditions giving rise to the Motion to Vacate is McCarthy. All the hand ringing is BS. In a closely divided HoR with very narrow majority a motion to vacate is like tossing a grenade. All of us, some more than others, realize exactly how messy tossing a grenade into a crowded room can be. McCarthy was well aware of the potential consequences and proceeded to do the sort of late night, last minute, backroom double dealing that the more populist members told him would likely trigger a grenade or a series of grenades being tossed onto the floor of the HoR.

Holy smokes, I thought we were in trouble down here with a socialist government. From the comments I feel a lot of anger, same as here.
We have a referendum coming up which, if successful will divide us by race. Astounding as it may seem, 38% of Aussie voters may support this garbage.

I hope your country can withstand and overcome the woke.

You know what would make voting for a Speaker who actually represents his caucus much easier?

Term limits on Congress (and the total of all federal elective office).

I’m no fan of Kevin McCarthy, and I never have been, but the timing of Gaetz’ effort really is foolishly risky.

The Republican majority has been, as many here have noted, little better than a Democrat majority would have been, but I’d prefer a slower walk to national suicide than the full-on run the Democrats would provide.

Gaetz has stepped in it. Is he is prepared to run himself?

Finicky Fat Guy | October 3, 2023 at 1:44 pm

I didin’t know enough about McArthy to know whether he should or shouldn’t be Speaker. His acting like he deserved it, it was his birthright, and there was no one else among the 220 or so Republicans who was qualified to hose the seat really put me off and made me suspicious of him. No one who wants the power that much should be allowed anywhere near it.

I don’t think wants the SoH job. He in all likelihood won’t get the votes he would need. The real question is what’s the plan to to replace McCarthy?

Do you want a bold move? Replace McCarthy with Trump, if only for the next 12-13 months.
