Boston City Councilor Sparks Outrage by Describing Hamas Terror Attack on Israel as a ‘Military Operation’

“Fernandes Anderson, the first Muslim ever elected to the Boston City Council, covered her face as she wept during the meeting.”

https://youtu.be/MW_QQUzBvw8?si=ZBhLjkxpfattffCF

This week, the city council in Boston tried to pass a resolution supporting Israel, but far left members of the body objected. One member named Tania Fernandes Anderson offered her own resolution, which downplayed the horrific acts committed by Hamas and called for a cease fire.

Even other Democrats were stunned by this, noting that Hamas carried out the worst act of terror against the Jewish people since the Holocaust.

The Boston Herald reports:

Boston city councilor’s description of Hamas attack as ‘massive military operation’ sparks outrage

A Boston city councilor’s description of the Hamas terrorist organization as a “militant group” and characterization of the attack that killed over 1,400 Israelis, among them women, children and babies, as a “military operation” has sparked outrage at City Hall.

The resolution filed by Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson calling for de-escalation and a cease-fire in Israel and “occupied Palestine” was introduced at a Wednesday City Council meeting in response to one filed earlier in the week by Councilor Michael Flaherty, who wanted to condemn “Hamas and their brutal terrorist acts against Israel.”

“To call them a militant group that launched a massive military operation is completely absurd and disgusting,” Flaherty told the Herald. “That wasn’t a military operation. That was a terrorist attack — and it was the worst barbaric aggression towards innocent Jewish people since the Holocaust.”…

Councilor Frank Baker also slammed his colleague’s portrayal of Hamas as a “Palestinian militant group” that “launched a massive military operation,” saying he was “at a loss for words” after reading Fernandes Anderson’s resolution.

Democrats have normalized the radical wing of their party and when these people speak, they reveal how completely insane their world view is, horrifying even liberals.

David Strom of Hot Air describes the impossible position Democrats have put themselves in:

For years we have heard Leftists chant “By any means necessary,” and for some reason, people didn’t believe they meant it even after the George Floyd riots in 2020. The takeover of city centers like the CHAZ/CHOP zone, the “defund the police extremists,” and the shouts of “No justice no peace” were ignored, despite the obvious sincerity. In fact, Democrats around the country embraced the riots, and Nancy Pelosi openly wondered why more didn’t happen.

Now you have elected officials, academics, and massive groups of students out there chanting their support for Hamas terrorists, and even threatening their fellow Democrats. The extremists have come out to play, and Democrat leaders are caught between a rock and a hard place. They don’t want to embrace the terrorists, but don’t want to denounce a substantial portion of their base.

This report from WCVB News in Boston is all about the feels:

Israel-Hamas war sparks emotional debate within Boston City Council

A pro-Israel resolution brought up during Wednesday’s Boston City Council meeting amid Israel’s war with Hamas led to an emotional debate among the council’s members that brought one councilor to tears…

Fernandes Anderson, the first Muslim ever elected to the Boston City Council, covered her face as she wept during the meeting. She called for the return of the hostages taken by Hamas, but also for an immediate ceasefire by both sides.

In other words, this city councilor is taking the exact same position as the members of the Squad.

Who could have predicted such a thing?

She needs to be expelled from the city council.

That would be gratifying but I don’t see council Democrats expelling a fellow Democrat.

Maybe after the next election. Same of the Hamas Insurrection in DC, statute of limitations will allow prosecution in 2025.

That won’t happen, of course, and I suspect she’ll be re-elected for as long as she wishes.

“You just have to stop killing innocent people,” said the Muslim city councilor.

A lotta double-speak there. To the Muslim mindset not accepting their Allah as supreme means you are immediately guilty and therefore can never be innocent.

Further, Muslims hold that Jews in particular are especially guilty (reason: for rejecting Big Mo way back when), and that no Jew can ever be innocent.

Imagine how surprised everyone who is complaining about Nashaat Ahmed will be when they find out that he is just quoting the Qur’an:

“And you know about those among you who broke the Sabbath, how we said to them, Be apes, despised and hated.” (2:65)

“Say, O people of the book, do you blame us for anything other than the fact that we believe in Allah and in what is revealed to us and what was revealed previously, and because most of you are transgressors? Shall I tell you of a worse case than theirs for retribution with Allah? He whom Allah has cursed, on whom his wrath has fallen, and of whose sort, Allah has turned some into apes and pigs, and slaves of taghut. Such people are in a worse condition and farther astray from the sound path.” (5:59-60)

“So when they took pride in what they had been forbidden, we said to them, Be apes, despised and hated.” (7:166)

The MAC claims that these are “deliberate mistranslations.” I [Robert Spencer] challenge them to provide the correct translation, while demonstrating that these translations are indeed inaccurate.

She can’t be expelled. The council lacks the power to expel members.

No more immigrants should be allowed from the Middle East, especially those from Palestine. No further naturalizations of people from the Middle East.

Birth right citizenship must end. Require one parent to be a citizen.

It is time to deal with the reality that Islam is subversive & not compatible with Western civilization.

Last week I saw pictures of charred remains, including a baby. This is something that is unforgivable, not ever.

    CMartel732 in reply to JohnSmith100. | October 20, 2023 at 11:20 am

Islam is not just incompatible with Western Civilization (except that it likes its technology) it has tried to destroy it with armies up to its defeat at the Battle of Vienna 1683. Its long range goal is always the entire world under Sharia.

    Milhouse in reply to JohnSmith100. | October 23, 2023 at 2:08 am

Israel is in the Middle East. So’s Cyprus.

And ending birthright citizenship requires two thirds of both houses of congress, and then majorities in both houses of 38 state legislatures. Lotsa luck with that.

TY Mike,

Just heard a new buzzword on the news, “victim doctrine”, SMH..
This lady is a perfect example.. Hamas are victims, military action justified.
We all know it is total bs.. but she will get a pass. POC always do…

“but far left members of the body objected.”
NO, some Democrat members objected. We have to stop giving Democrats any cover.

If those Israelis were killed in a military operation George Floyd was killed in a police operation. However, he wasn’t raped, burned or beheaded by the police.

thalesofmiletus | October 20, 2023 at 8:18 am

“Some people did something”

Yeah, let’s roll out the red carpet for unlimited Hamas refugees. We need more terrorists and terrorist sympathizers flipping states blue. /s

Raping women, killing civilians, beheading babies, etc., are described by these Leftists as a military operation while if you dare criticize the Leftists for the lies they spread, then it is called violence by them. These are worse than spoiled, overentitled children and have no place or useful purpose in any civilized society.

Calling this particular TV station’s reports news is like saying that I can play football like Tom Brady.

After WWII, some Jewish high school girls were interviewed about who were the boys in their high schools were the ones who most enthusiastic about nazism and Hitler Youth, etc.

“The boys that nobody really liked.”

Basically, the losers.

By joining up, they were catapulted into positions of authority etc

Thats what comes to mind when sizing up this lady. In no other circumstance, honestly, would anybody pay any attention to this lady.

She knows it.

Those when recruited her know it.

Those who guide and encourage her today .. know it.

Boston is circling the drain. The City Council is a parade of fools, the Mayor a communist from Harvard (by way of Chicago). Flew Boston? We fled the entire state, it’s hopeless.

There are good parts of Massachusetts, but they exist solely to be mulcted by the bad parts. They have zero influence, zero power, and zero hope of ever exerting any sort of political control.

My exact thought on this woman

She will do anything get attention

    artichoke in reply to BrWW31. | October 21, 2023 at 10:17 pm

The Nazis themselves had a lot of people like that. The guy who should have pursued architecture, which he had talent for, but instead was rejected from art. The chicken farmer. And so on, these were generally not people who had done well in the society, but they knew how to be brutal.

That’s fine sleazebags and Israel should carry out full scale military operations in retaliation by entering Gaza and eliminating Hamas and all collaborators to prevent any future unprovoked “military operations.”

The Gentle Grizzly | October 20, 2023 at 9:25 am

“Fernandes Anderson, the first Muslim ever elected to the Boston City Council…”

She won’t be the last.

Bear with me here…
“To call them a militant group that launched a massive military operation is completely absurd and disgusting,”
Why is this such a thing to people? Have we simply denigrated the language so much with Progressivism that this isn’t spittle-infused enough?

Don’t get me wrong. I understand she was trying to provide some legitimacy to their actions. But why is it necessary to allow that it does? What she said (in that statement, in isolation) is factually true. It’s also true that the “military operation” (you know, war) they executed was what we consider terrorism.

Our response should not be “That’s an outrageous claim!” but “And it was still evil and without just cause, so that claim doesn’t make their actions morally legitimate.”

CommoChief in reply to GWB. | October 20, 2023 at 9:43 am

Terrorists commit acts of terrorism just as Pirates commit acts of Piracy. Neither of those are legitimate acts of ‘war’. War is conducted by lawful combatants between competing Nation States. ‘Gaza’ isn’t a Nation State and the junta in charge of it, Hamas, is a terrorist group.

And those are Western definitions, based on Just War Doctrine and passed through Progressivism. If you don’t assume the world operates under those definitions, then her statement doesn’t legitimize anything.

CommoChief in reply to GWB. | October 20, 2023 at 12:06 pm

She is seeking to use the legal, moral and cultural definitions developed by and adhered to in the West as both sword and shield against Western Civilization. We shouldn’t be willing to concede the language and precise definitions to those opposed to Western Civilization. Not one inch.

‘Just War’ doctrine and adoption of rules of conduct among belligerent entities began well before ‘progressivism’. It flowed out of Chivalry and in particular out of the rise of professional mercenary bands during the 100 years war and in the various squabbles between Italian City States.

It has, however, been warped (like all Christian doctrines) by Progressivism, to assume that all people are genteel and “desire freedom” and other baloney. Chivalry also laid siege to towns and starved the people into surrender and other things the Progressive worldview now calls “immoral.” It did not let evil use the morals of chivalry to hide behind. And it practiced total warfare where needed and didn’t shy from calling what the other side did “warfare” and evil.

CommoChief in reply to CommoChief. | October 20, 2023 at 2:19 pm

I strongly disagree with allowing the lefty whackos who oppose Western Civilization to even ATTEMPT to use our Western Culture as a cudgel to bludgeon us with to do so unopposed. By ceding the language we cede the argument b/c they seek to cherry pick when words meet a standard definition.

When we allow this to go unchallenged it creates confusion in some of the audience b/c the audience believes X word has Y definition. The leftists have no compunction about intentionally sowing doubt or confusion by using words untethered to a common definition and commonplace usage. We shouldn’t allow that.

The rules were quite severe back then. In many ways much cleaner as a result. For example a town could simply surrender to avoid any assault much less a ‘sack’ and the accompanying rape and looting following the successful attack which was itself made necessary by the refusal to surrender. IOW, the severe consequences aligned everyone’s incentives to avoid the assault of a town v today.

artichoke in reply to CommoChief. | October 21, 2023 at 10:19 pm

But by making the distinction, you improperly protect Gaza from a full military operation to subdue it in normal military terms. No, Gaza should be cleaned out, military style. They started a war, let Israel finish it.

She and the Squad should be air dropped into Gaza.

A temper tantrum would be closer than a military operation.

    henrybowman in reply to 2smartforlibs. | October 21, 2023 at 1:02 am

I honestly don’t see what the big deal is.
The people of Gaza elected Hamas. That makes them a government. The thugs who executed this operation are direct representatives of Hamas. This gives them legitimacy as a state military.
As far as I am concerned, this is a Catch 22 anyway: either they are terrorists committing atrocities, or they are a military force committing war crimes. Either way, the raid itself is illegitimate and criminal. So what is the big deal whether or not we call it “military?” It all ends up in the same penalty box.

    artichoke in reply to 2smartforlibs. | October 21, 2023 at 10:20 pm

A temper tantrum doesn’t kill hundreds, wound thousands, shock the world with its cruelty and take hundreds of hostages, supported in some way by Russia. A temper tantrum isn’t punished the way this should be punished.

Yet another example of why one should not elect Muslims to political office. Their true allegiance must always be to Islam & fellow Muslims.

You can’t trusts their oaths at all esp if sworn on a Koran https://islamseries.files.wordpress.com/2020/04/what-islam-teaches-about-taking-an-oath-so-help-me-god.pdf

Muslims believe the verses of the Koran are direct words from their god Allah and must accordingly be followed.

Koran 48:29 “Muhammad is the apostle of Allah. Those who follow him are merciful to one another, ruthless to unbelievers.”

DNC needs to send clear message.

Expel the squad from Dem party, and thereby deny the squad DNC funding. The squad can call themselves “independents” and caucus with Bernie, and raise their own funding.

Dems also need to agree to new regulations that only permit display of national and state flags for offices of Congress and Senate.

Why did Boston’s City Council need to consider any resolution about this conflict?

Hamas is the elected government of Gaza, so it was a military operation. It was a declaration of war. Israel has every right and duty to fight back.

Subotai Bahadur in reply to geronl. | October 20, 2023 at 12:52 pm

Exactly right. Since July of 2007 Gaza has been totally self-governing, under an elected HAMAS government. It has not been “occupied territory” for 16 years. It claims national sovereignty. So take the Boston counselor at her word. The forces of what claims to be a sovereign nation has conducted military operations against the State of Israel and its people, incidentally committing numerous violations of international law in the process.

In short, a legal state of war exists between Gaza and Israel. In the main post, it has David Strom mentioning the Leftist concept of “By Any Means Necessary”. A state of war makes that phrase reality. The only minimal limits are treaties about use of chemical or biological weapons. And if they are used by either side it will only be legally resolved after the war is over. Although retaliation will make the legal resolution moot.

If this counselor is right [and she checks enough oppressed boxes that any Leftist has to believe her] then Israel would be justified in using the nuclear weapons that they have on the 141 square miles of Gaza [about twice the size of Washington, DC].

I assume that possibility, and others, have been brought up in Israeli staff studies. I suspect that one of the major restraints for that is the presence of major American naval forces offshore which I believe have as their mission making sure that Israel does NOT defeat HAMAS to the point where HAMAS does not survive.

    Subotai Bahadur

artichoke in reply to geronl. | October 20, 2023 at 5:00 pm

Correct, but also terroristic i.e. totally ignoring and violating the Geneva Convention. Such a regime needs to be extinguished and the ability of those people to threaten Israel ended. They should be moved out, and if the King of Jordan calls it an act of war, then remove his crown too.

markm in reply to geronl. | October 23, 2023 at 7:19 pm

It was a military operation, and the greatest war crime since WWII. And Hamas planned it that way.

They want a ceasefire because they don’t want their terrorist buddies to be killed, which they richly deserve. These useful idiots are the enemy of our country – traitors who deserve what traitors deserve.

This is not James Michael Curley’s Boston.

She showed what side she was on, the beheaders.

A ‘Military Operation’?

So what? Do she think that implies some sort of legitimacy? That calling it such makes it right somehow?

Here are a few other ‘Military Operations’ – Operation Barbarossa, the rape of Nanking, my lai massacre, Khmer Rouge genocide, Mali massacre, etc.. Are they legitimate as well?

If only curing ignorance was more highly valued than mindless but loud militantism.

artichoke in reply to Gosport. | October 20, 2023 at 4:56 pm

I would agree with her, it was a military operation but with disregard for the Geneva Convention. It was also supported by Russia as we now know.

That justifies Israel going to full-blown war, as they have done. They would be justified to terminate the governments in both Gaza and in Moscow, although the latter would be hard to do.
