Univision Host Co-Moderating Second GOP Debate Claimed Trump ‘Empowers White Supremacists’

“Calderón, who co-moderated the last Democrat presidential debate in 2020 between Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and President Joe Biden, has railed against Trump on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, over the years.”

The moderators of the second 2024 Republican primary debate have been chosen. The debate will be moderated by Dana Perino of FOX News, Stuart Varney of the FOX Business Network, and Ilia Calderón of Univision.

Dana Perino is an obvious representative of the establishment GOP, and she deserves to ask questions in this forum, not only based on her experience in a cabinet, but also as a longtime political media analyst.

Stuart Varney was an early and vocal supporter of Donald Trump. He also brings a unique perspective on economic issues. The reasons for his presence at this debate are obvious.

What is strange is the participation of Ilia Calderón of Univision, who once said Donald Trump ’empowers white supremacy.’

Breitbart News reported:

Second GOP Debate Co-Moderator Ilia Calderón Accused Trump of ‘Racist’ Rhetoric: He ‘Empowers White Supremacists’

Univision’s Ilia Calderón, who will co-moderate the second Republican presidential debate, is a staunch critic of former President Donald Trump, having accused him of empowering white supremacists and “racist” rhetoric in the past.

Fox News and Univision announced that Calderón, along with Fox News’s Dana Perino and Fox Business Network’s Stuart Varney, will moderate the September 27 debate at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California.

Calderón, who co-moderated the last Democrat presidential debate in 2020 between Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and President Joe Biden, has railed against Trump on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, over the years.

After the first 2020 presidential debate on September 19, 2020, Calderon joined others in accusing Trump of not condemning white supremacists when moderator Chris Wallace asked if Trump would condemn them and militia groups and say that “they need to stand down.”

While Trump said “sure,” he caught criticism for stating, “Proud Boys, stand back and stand by,” as Breitbart News Senior Editor Joel Pollak pointed out in a fact check at the time. “Wallace is the one who introduced the “stand down” language — not Trump, who was doing what he was asked,” Pollak emphasized:

“A dangerous moment of the debate,” Calderón tweeted afterward. “Trump not only does not condemn but empowers white supremacists.”

See below:

There are other examples of her bias, too:

Democrats would never, ever submit to a debate moderated by Tucker Carlson and Maria Bartiromo, yet every four years Republicans agree to debates moderated by left wing journalists. Why?

Why must every Republican answer to progressive journalists but never the opposite?

Everyone can see this sham for what it is.

Hence why Trump isn’t wasting his time with these pointless debates.

The RNC is led by Mittens’ neice.

          Liar.

“I am pleased to announce that I have given my full support and endorsement to Ronna McDaniel to continue heading the Republican National Committee (RNC)……..”

That quotation was from Nov. 2020. President Trump; said he was going to be neutral in the 2023 GOP election. Like I’ve said before, you’re entitled to your own ill-informed opinion but you’re not entitled to your own facts. Even when you suffer from TDS.

          concise

You are correct, Trump didn’t endorse McDaniel in her bid to remain RNC Chair in ’23. He did endorse her in ’17, ’19 and ’21 despite the less than stellar results in both the ’18 midterms and the ’20 Presidential.

While Trump did remain neutral by refusing to take a position on the question of whether McDaniel should be replaced given her poor results as RNC Chair, he did push for McCarthy to become Speaker and for McConnell to be Minority Leader in the Senate.

On the bright side, she’s probably not as biased as Judge Chutkan.

You mean Ronna Romney McDaniel is a Romney? Who knew?

Since Trump won’t be there, maybe she can try that line with another R, just in a different way. It would be a good chance for an R to blister her little red liberal butt.

Trump empowers mathematicians, engineers and scientists, she’s saying.

Wonder how much she will make in her task of formenting doubt?
I hope Larry Elder gets to co-host a DNC debate.

“”and a limey under Cavuto’s control””

Not a nice thing to say about one of Trump’s strongest (and most influential) supporters, as anybody who watches his morning show on FBN (which obviously doesn’t include you) can attest.

Yawn fest … again

Little d should speak to her in Spanish

Including Calderon is a huge blunder, IMO. It would be nice to know what the true story of her inclusion is. Did the RNC have final say over whom the networks could use as moderators or did they foolishly grant Fox Business and Univision the choice of moderators when these networks were chosen for 2nd debate?

In a GoP primary there should never be a moderator openly partisan for or against a particular candidate nor should the RNC allow partisan hacks in the role of moderator in either primary or general election debates.

It might make a difference if Trump was going to be there. As it is, who cares? She has no reason (apparently) to be partisan without him. She should hate them all equally.

      CommoChief in reply to txvet2. | September 3, 2023 at 7:44 am

Disagree. The GoP should exclude ideological hack ‘journalists’ not reward them or raise their profile. Including Calderon, IMO, appears to legitimize her.

      henrybowman in reply to txvet2. | September 3, 2023 at 8:55 pm

Even the first debates were composed of Democrat “gotcha” questions designed to do nothing but embarrass Republicans. How come we never see this pattern of behavior at Democrat debates?

    AF_Chief_Master_Sgt in reply to CommoChief. | September 2, 2023 at 7:11 pm

    Chief

Moderators should not be journaliars. They should be selected from the population at random, given specific questions to ask, the STFU until the next question.

I would be happy with random people from the Outer Buttfuck Nebraska obituary page.

Trump should take a pass again. But so should the rest of them.

I am not sure that “Calderon is a huge blunder”. Trump will not be there and she may give those who are an opportunity to show off the Democrats weakness, in a way that the other two moderators may not. Vivek might get one or more “hug Obama” moments out of her.

      CommoChief in reply to jb4. | September 3, 2023 at 7:48 am

IMO, allowing a known partisan who masquerades as as a ‘journalist’ to serve as a moderator is foolish. It looks to many people as if the GoP is rewarding her partisan actions instead of punishing them by refusing her participation.

She just declared herself to be a Cultural Marxist

Trump has something going that no one else has. If something nice is said about Trump he goes up in the polls, if something neutral is said about Trump he goes up, if something bad is said he goes up. No Democrat has that, and I don’t think any Republican has that.

The GOPe house needs to be cleaned out. It’s not the 1990s…politics has moved on from Rs and Ds since you really can’t tell the difference anymore.

“Why must every Republican answer to progressive journalists but never the opposite?”

Because a substantial percentage of establishment Republicans are progressives themselves. Which is why Dems always get most of what they want, and actual conservatives get only rhetoric and sternly worded letters.
