Uber Offers Free Rides to Temple University Students to Help Them Feel Safe

“Every student will receive up to four $20 rides around a nine-and-a-half-mile radius of Main Campus between now, and the end of the year.”

Crime in Philadelphia is up and it’s having a serious impact on student life at Temple.

FOX 29 News reports:

Uber offering free rides to help Temple University students feel safe

Any Temple University student who finds themselves in an uncomfortable situation has a new way to call for safety.

Uber is offering free rides home in an effort to make campus feel safer for the university’s young students.

Every student will receive up to four $20 rides around a nine-and-a-half-mile radius of Main Campus between now, and the end of the year.

The $200,000 offer is thanks to a partnership between Uber and the university’s Student Activists Against Sexual Assault program, according to The Temple News.

Uber drivers getting robbed in 3, 2, 1

Given the name of the program, does this include men as well?

Both Uber and Lyft’s terms of service forbid both drivers and passengers from carrying arms. They’ve been in this frying pan for years, this will add no risk.

I don’t feel prosperous or wealthy. Can I get a governmental organization or a multinational corporation to help me out?

It was either Confucius or maybe it was Plato I don’t remember which — but the ancient proverb goes , “Hey, maroon, if you don’t feel safe within a nine-and-half mile of a Philadelphia campus, and you actually believe that a few Uber rides will rectify your security situation, maybe you ought to rethink your choices in life.”

Stupid is as stupid does.

Really stupid is as really stupid does.

    Ladies:

You’re going to be targeted and assaulted after you exit your Uber.

    Right outside your apartment.

And/or after you’re forced to unlock the door to your apartment, so that your attacker(s) can , um,take their time.

    Duh

That’s one long fortune cookie, T23.

Here’s an idea.

Instead of four years I one of the most dangerous cities in the USA, consider:

1. Move to Florida immediately after graduating from high school.

2. Get an apartment or move in with friends/relatives, and get a Florida drivers license.

3. Now that you’re a legal resident of Florida, you’re eligible for in-state tuition at Florida universities and community colleges. These are all much better value for dollar than Temple. These $$$ differences are large, not trivial.

4. Now, during the year before you matriculate at your Florida college, split your time ~50:50 learning español to a Level of A1 or A2, and learning a job

Within a year or two, you will be far more prepared for adult American life in the 21st century than anyone who went to Temple right out of high school.

You will also have been less likely to be robbed or raped.

Likewise, your friends and family will be safer and happier when they visit you.
