Remember when the mainstream media ‘fact-checked’ President Donald Trump for warning about the rampant migrant crime in Sweden? “Sweden, who would believe this. Sweden. They took in large numbers. They’re having problems like they never thought possible,” President Trump said in a speech just weeks after taking office in 2017.
Here is some solid “fact-checking” from the FactCheck.Org written in February 2017: “Swedish authorities and criminologists say President Donald Trump is exaggerating crime in Sweden as a result of its liberal policy of accepting refugees from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries.”
“While there has been an uptick in some crime categories, government statistics from Sweden do not corroborate the claim of a major crime wave due to immigrants,” the smug ‘fact checkers’ assured. Just an itsy bitsy ‘uptick.’ And nothing to do with the swarms of illegal migrants they are letting into their country.
Well, fact check this: On Thursday, Sweden’s government announced that it was calling in the military to deal with migrant crime gangs amid spiraling violence and bloodshed.
“Sweden’s prime minister said on Thursday he has asked for the military’s help to deal with an unprecedented crime wave that has shaken the country,” the France-based Euronews TV reported. “The step was prompted by a severe wave of shootings and bombings that have claimed a dozen lives across Sweden, including teenagers and innocent bystanders,” the broadcaster noted.
Germany’s state-owned DW TV reported:
Sweden’s government said on Friday it would authorize the military to assist the police in fighting organized criminal groups.The comments come after Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson met with the head of Sweden’s armed forces and the police chief on Friday to discuss ways to stem growing gang violence in the country.Following the meeting, Kristersson said police and armed forces would have an official mandate to explore ways to cooperate. He also said the government would look into changing the law that limits the circumstances in which the police can request military assistance without giving specific details.”The wave of violence is… unprecedented in Sweden, but it is also unprecedented in Europe, no other country has a situation like the one we have,” he said. “The police cannot do all the work themselves.”In September alone, 12 people were killed in the wave of violence sweeping the country. One was killed in a bomb attack, and another 11 were shot dead in separate incidents.National Police Commissioner Anders Thornberg clarified, however, that armed forces would not be given “direct” policing tasks.Kristersson said Sweden’s armed forces could help police with knowledge of explosives, helicopter logistics and analyses, adding that this could be done without changing any laws.The Scandinavian country has been wrestling with rampant gang crime for years. Thornberg said it now poses a “serious threat to the safety and security of the country.”After winning the election last year, Kristersson’s coalition government had given police greater powers and introduced harsher punishment for gun crimes.
The military is being asked to help as the police appears to have capitulated before the migrant gangs. “Police chiefs have said that Sweden is facing its most serious domestic security situation since the second world war as immigrant drug gangs engage in a bloody conflict,” the Financial Times (UK) reported. “Police believe the gangs are increasingly using children to commit the crimes, as those under 18 often go unpunished or receive low sentences from the courts.”
The UK daily correctly diagnosed the problem, perhaps unwittingly. “Sweden long stood out in Europe along with Germany for having liberal immigration policies and welcoming hundreds of thousands of asylum-seekers from the Middle East and Africa,” the newspaper wrote.
Sweden, roughly the size of California, has followed the most leftist immigration and refugee policies in recent decades. Today, out of its ten million population, over two million are immigrants, government data shows. During the Balkan war in the 1990s, the Nordic nation took in more than 100,000 largely Muslim Bosnians and Kosovo Albanians. In the wake of the 2015 European migrant crisis, the country accepted over 160,00 migrants.
