Saybrook University President Says DEI Efforts Are at the ‘Core’ of the Purpose of Higher Ed

“A college education in the 21st century must include clear, intentional, ongoing and challenging discussions on justice, diversity, equity and inclusion”

The purpose of higher education used to be the pursuit of knowledge and academic achievement. Now many people on the left think that DEI is the main goal.

Campus Reform reports:

University president claims DEI efforts are at the ‘core’ of the purpose of higher ed

A university president said America’s reputation as a world leader in higher education is at risk due to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion policies being “under siege.”

“Every facet of campus life that can help expand a student’s or community’s perspective on difference–race-conscious curriculum, diversity training, equity-focused initiatives highlighting systemic inequalities–ism political leaders with an agenda to advance (and a straw poll in their sights),” Dr. Nathan Long, president of Saybrook University, writes in Higher Ed Dive.

“I cannot state this more clearly: America’s longstanding reputation as a global leader in higher education is at stake,” Dr. Long notes.

“A college education in the 21st century must include clear, intentional, ongoing and challenging discussions on justice, diversity, equity and inclusion,” he writes. “Institutions that don’t fulfill this vision do their students a profound disservice.”

Long says that with the next generation of American leaders, “professionals and citizens must understand our country’s diverse and evolving landscape if they want to be effective professionals and engaged community members after graduation.”

Diversity discussions are not “nice-to-haves,” but rather “sit at the core of what it means to be an institution of higher learning,” he writes.

Long also notes the recent ‘movement’ of dismantling “efforts to diversify our nation’s campuses.” He draws on the recent Supreme Court decision that ruled “race-conscious admissions unconstitutional.”

Furthermore, he says that state institutions are ‘muzzled’ by political forces when it comes to diversity-related issues.

Long references Saybrook’s Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Council, which is identifying and removing exclusionary language, and “evaluating the effectiveness of toolkits to help hire more diverse candidates,” Long explains.

Any parent who pays for their kid to go to that school is an idiot.

Isn’t this the exact same kind of thinking espoused by the guy who killed himself and three others aboard that Titan submersible?

I look forward to seeing The Last of The JEDI.

I would not be surprised if Saybrook were having financial and enrollment challenges like the rest of higher ed, and that President Palpatine’s messaging is just so much blather that most prospective students could care less about, not to mention their parents. And I would flunk their marketing department for coming up with the most trite and overused acronyms to boot.

Nathan Long is a misguided a-hole.

Any academic who claims DIE is fundamental to education, or that it sits at the core of what it means to be an institution of higher learning, is unfit for their role having made clear they’re committed to Leftist indoctrination and opposed to real education.

This is yet another unbridgeable divide between Left and Right. Education and equality versus indoctrination, discrimination, and a privilege based hierarchy.

Seriously — Do you honestly believe that they care a wit what your opinion is?

If anything, they derive status and respect from their peers in direct proportion to the extent of your condemnation of them.

They hate you. And they enjoy hating you.

And now they have an outlet to bully you, to take your stuff, to laugh at you, and to incarcerate and sue you.

It’s all been done before — eg, 1930s Germany as described in near-real time by Wm Shirer (BERLIN DIARY) , also Rwanda Hutus/Tutsis , also The Terror following French Revolution, other examples.

    Times change.

Imho , sane Americans need to recognize and accept the reality of our present time.

Especially if you have children or grandchildren.
