University of Idaho Murder Suspect Waives His Right to a Speedy Trial, Delaying it Indefinitely
“Kohberger’s lawyer, Anne Taylor, reportedly told the court that his legal team was not prepared to present their case by the original October trial date”
Bryan Kohberger, who is the main suspect in the brutal murder of four University of Idaho students last year, has waived his right to a speedy trial, bringing the process to a near standstill.
Kohberger is facing the death penalty, so perhaps his legal team is just trying to buy time for him.
The Hill reports:
Trial of alleged Idaho college murderer delayed indefinitely
The trial of Bryan Kohberger, who is accused of killing four Idaho college students last year, has been delayed indefinitely after he waived his right to a speedy trial Wednesday.
Kohberger’s trial was originally scheduled for Oct. 2 and was set to move forward after Latah County Magistrate Judge John Judge denied his legal team’s request for a stay Friday.
However, Kohberger waived his right Wednesday to a speedy trial, allowing the court to schedule his trial more than six months out from his arraignment.
Kohberger’s lawyer, Anne Taylor, reportedly told the court that his legal team was not prepared to present their case by the original October trial date, according to CNN.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against Kohberger, who is accused of killing University of Idaho students Xana Kernodle, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves at a rental house near the campus last November.
According to this video report, the state was just fine with this decision.
CBS News has a few more details:
Uncuffed and in plain clothes, Bryan Kohberger walked into a courtroom Friday as the families of the four University of Idaho college students he is accused of murdering last year watched from feet away.
In the hearing, Kohberger’s defense questioned the validity of DNA found on a knife sheath at the crime scene that authorities allege connected him to the four murders. Defense attorneys demanded more information from prosecutors about the DNA.
“They have provided full DNA discovery for the sheath, the knife sheath, but not the other three unidentified male DNA samples,” defense attorney Anne Taylor told the judge.
Prosecutors countered that they have handed over what they have.
“We have given the defense everything that we have received from the lab. They’ve asked for DNA work-ups on other people. To the extent that they don’t have them, they weren’t done,” Latah County Prosecuting Attorney Bill Thompson said. “We can’t produce something that doesn’t exist.”
Kohberger could face a firing squad if convicted.

His goal is to outlive the jury pool?
Kohberger could face a firing squad if convicted.
A lot more humane than that insane three-drug lethal injection protocol that was invented when the electric chair was deemed “unconstitutional”.
By the time he sees a firing squad, our country will no longer be a Constitutional republic.
Obviously, since he can’t go back in time.
If I were afforded a choice, I would select the Guillotine.
I would choose old age.
Assuming the drugs are injected in the correct order, just sayin.
It is time to reclaim the struggle. This twists them into knots.

I’m surprised he hasn’t yet fallen down a few flights of stairs in prison. The longer he’s locked up the better the chances
I am pretty sure that he is kept in a local holding jail prior to trial. This is one of the reasons for the delay is to keep him out of a maximum security prison as long as possible.
Is there any space left in the DC gulag?
““They have provided full DNA discovery for the sheath, the knife sheath, but not the other three unidentified male DNA samples,” defense attorney Anne Taylor told the judge.”
What ‘other three unidentified male DNA samples?’
Three other samples? Raises about a million possibilities. If true, going to be very interesting. At least, some possibility of reasonable doubt.is now likely. If jurors have heard about it, it won’t matter much how the prosecution tries to downplay the importance.
Maybe three guys working at the store where he got it?
I doubt it. They have his whereabouts well mapped from phone tagging.
This will give him time to transition into Bryanna. This, in turn, will free her of any involvement concerning the misdeeds of Bryan, In fact, anyone trying to deadname her will quickly be brought to justice.
This gives the prosecution more time to resolve those “three unidentified DNA” samples. It could hurt the defense if the three are finally resolved and the sources unquestionably absolved of any involvement. The defense loses a pretty good club to use on the prosecution to pound its way to “reasonable doubt”. There is always that one juror lurking, waiting for any straw to grasp to vote not guilty.
Based on all that has been made known about the case, it is a very long shot that one of those three will reveal the “Real Killer”. He could be hiding out with the druggies who killed Nicole Simpson. /sarc
All that does, is give the prosecution time to clear the 3 mystery DNA. Most likely friends of the victims.
‘It could hurt the defense if the three are finally resolved and the sources unquestionably absolved of any involvement. The defense loses a pretty good club to use on the prosecution to pound its way to “reasonable doubt”.’
True, though either way the defense will still have “the prosecution was so focused on fitting my client up for this crime that they didn’t bother to investigate the other DNA.”
What if one or more of the jurors has heard reports of corruption in forensic science?
The three samples are declared “irrelevant”. How convenient.
