“Gotcha” Media Fact Checks on DeSantis Debate Abortion Story Fail To Get Him

“I know a lady in Florida named Penny, she survived multiple abortion attempts. She was left discarded in a pan. Fortunately, her grandmother saved her and brought her to a different hospital.”

https://twitter.com/lindseycurnutte/status/1694528472394121628

During Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate, the subject of abortion was brought up in the questionable context of how it had allegedly “been a losing issue” for the GOP ever since Roe v. Wade was overturned in June of 2022.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was asked about the six-week abortion ban he signed into law in April and how he had one big “financial backer” who has suggested he move to the middle on the issue to attract moderates.

“What do you say to him and others who say, politically, that is a tough thing to sell nationally?” DeSantis was asked by Fox News anchor and co-debate moderator Bret Baier.

DeSantis’ full answer is below:

Well, I would say we sold the biggest election landslide victory in the history of the Republican Party in the state of Florida in 2022. That’s what I did. We can win.

But second of all, look, you got to do what you think is right. I believe in a culture of life. I was proud to sign the Heartbeat Bill. I remember the most impactful moments of my life was when I heard the heartbeat of my oldest daughter in my wife’s womb, and then saw the sonograms of all three of my kids.

What the Democrats are trying to do on this issue is wrong, to allow abortion all the way up to the moment of birth. I know a lady in Florida named Penny, she survived multiple abortion attempts. She was left discarded in a pan. Fortunately, her grandmother saved her and brought her to a different hospital.

We’re better than what the Democrats are selling. We are not going to allow abortion all the way up till birth, and we will hold them accountable for their extremism.

Watch:

Almost immediately, pro-abortion websites pounced on the brief but powerful story DeSantis told about the 23-week-old abortion survivor, Miriam “Penny” Hopper, because abortion activists don’t want anyone to believe that there is any such thing as an abortion survivor, let alone one who initially was left in a pan by a medical professional.

Jezebel was among the first, running with this headline:

Asked About Abortion, Ron DeSantis Tells Bizarre Story About a Fetus in a Pan

Words they used in their opening paragraph gave readers no doubt as to what they thought about the story (bolded emphasis added by me):

In a particularly desperate moment during Wednesday night’s Republican presidential primary debate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) answered a question about abortion by spinning up this little tale

Later, we were informed that “abortion all the way up to birth isn’t a thing.” And that DeSantis’ telling of the story was “desperate ‘abortion survivor’ bullshit.”

Because left-wing influencers like Jezebel were casting doubt on the story, naturally the MSM and purported fact-checkers rushed to back up the doubters.

We saw this with Politifact, which boiled DeSantis’ comments about the Penny abortion survivor story as a mere “perplexing anecdote” that was “dubious” because it could not be independently verified.

“We were unable to gauge the accuracy of Hopper’s account,” they wrote. However, they later claimed that, “medically speaking, the scenario is dubious.”

The New York Times also did their part to poke holes not only in what DeSantis said but also what Ms. Hopper has claimed about what happened, making sure to point out that the person who originally tried to abort Hopper in 1955 was her own father, not a doctor:

In a 2013 interview with the Florida radio station WFSU, conducted in the middle of a statehouse debate over new abortion restrictions, Ms. Hopper said that her story was based on what she had been told by her family. She said that her father, raised during the Great Depression, did not want another child and that she suspected a botched abortion had sent her mother to the hospital with the complications.

Later, the Times quoted an abortion-performing obstetrician and gynecologist, Diane Horvath, who said the scenario Hopper described about what happened at the clinic, where Hopper says the doctor induced an abortion because a heartbeat was not detected, did not “make sense” to her.

The Times also reported that Dr. Hovarth didn’t view Hopper’s story as “germane” to the current debate around abortion, even if Hopper’s recollection was accurate:

Even if Ms. Hopper’s story is accurate, it’s not particularly germane to a discussion of current abortion practices or regulations, Dr. Horvath said.

“It doesn’t represent the reality of medical practice at this moment,” she said. “It’s not really relevant to what we should be talking about when we talk about access to abortion.”

Conveniently, the Times left out the fact that Hovarth is about as woke of an abortionist as they come, blaming all societal ills on white supremacy and “toxic masculinity,” as her Twitter feed makes clear.

And in a predictable move, the DeSantis haters at the Miami Herald actually dug up news clippings from the time to try and piece together Hopper’s family history, claiming the fact that Hopper’s father attempting to abort her with a coathanger because he didn’t think they could afford to feed another child was actually not representative of abortion extremism but instead reflected “the perils of a world where abortion is all but outlawed and women can be forced into dangerous, desperate alternatives.”

“Pro-choice groups say that Hopper’s story presents an even stronger case not to outlaw legal and safe abortions,” they also wrote.

I mean, if you didn’t know better you’d think the piece had been written by Planned Parenthood.

Obviously a family story that dates back several decades is not always going to be told the exact same way every time. But, IMO, the point behind DeSantis bringing national attention to Hopper’s story is that there are indeed abortion babies who are born alive and who do in fact survive, but that Democrats oppose any laws that would mandate doctors perform life-saving medical procedures on those babies.

Doesn’t mean a whole lot. Desantis is trailing by 39 points regardless. One of the weirdest parts of this election cycle is all the pretending that Desantis is a serious or viable candidate. He isn’t.

Ahhhh, let’s go on with the primary season anyway. After all, it’s a tradition and we get a kick out of getting to vote, pretending we have a choice. You Trump guys don’t need to bother, though, since it seems to be beneath you.

How does it feel to be a racist in this world today? What other groups do you insult with ethnic slurs, Blacks, Jews, Poles, handicapped people? I’ll bet you are a big hit at the skinhead bar! Is your swastika nice and clean?

The “meatball” term is clearly a reference to his Italian heritage. That Dedacted (and Trump) is using it as an ethnic slur is beyond question. Why do you approve of that?

I’m curious Gonzo, what term do YOU use for Italians? How about Jews or Africans? What term do you and Redacted use for The Gentle Grizzly whenever he says something you don’t like?

          Urban dictionary: meatball

          — “a miserable, short Italian kid who always thinks he’s right”

Why didn’t you just use one of the more-commonly known slurs such as “dago” or wop?”

Because she likes to pretend (to herself) that she is a good person. She is a manipulator and a fraud on that count.

          kbeckes1 in reply to gonzotx. | August 28, 2023 at 10:54 am

Meatballs aren’t just Italian, they can be Swedish too. They’re also Turkish, Greek, Spanish, and Moroccan meatballs. I’ve even heard of meatballs in Bangladeshi cuisine. To call someone a “meatball” and assume they are Italian is neglecting the full spectrum of meatball possibilities. Maybe if he called him a meathead it would be less objectionable.

Racism in the name of dear leader.

Don’t for a second think your anti-Italian racism is better than any other form of it you jackass.

The world doesn’t end in 2024. If DeSantis comes in second in the primary (or third), he will have many more opportunities to run. Ronald Reagan ran in (checks Wiki) ’68 and ’76 before winning in ’80. He is running a good campaign, keeping his bridge-burning to a minimum and focusing on the issues much like he did running for governor and the House, showing that he is an adult in a field frequently dominated by children, i.e. the media. We’re going to need serious candidates this election if we’re going to win big enough to keep the Dems from cheating their way in. So far, it seems we have them. Good.

Danny in reply to georgfelis. | August 27, 2023 at 8:41 pm

2028 when Biden steps down the country will be turned so far to the left that what exactly will winning mean?

Did Tory winning after the Blair era ended mean a return to the pre-Blair era?

Trump Cultists are fine with Trump handing the election to Biden (which he is in the process of doing) because they really don’t care about anything besides Trump and somebody else beating Biden would eliminate the bullshit about voter fraud playing any role in the 2020 election (it didn’t play any).

Democrats had the common sense not to put their bullshit about Russia on the ballot by nominating Clinton a second time. There is good reason for that.

Gonzo, you are a horrible person, and you prove it every day. You can’t even insult someone properly, you have to play stupid games and try to make yourself clean in the process of telling someone they are in a circle jerk. Do you hear you? What a horrible horrible person you are.

And do you really think you are in Trump’s “circle”? Ever talked to him (either on the phone or in person–seems that would be required to be in anyone’s circle, no?)? Ever even been in the same zip code with him, excluding his rallies (which he doesn’t hold anymore, did you even notice?). Think he’ll bail you out of jail (you’d be the first)?

You are most decidedly not in Trump’s circle; indeed, Trump would revile you if he knew you because you are a horrible person. Trump hates horrible people (unless they are Clintons, of course, and you are no Clinton). Trump would never ever ever even acknowledge your existence because you are a stupid person, and Trump hates stupid people.

Your self-inflated sense of yourself, with your “my man” and disdaining far better people than you as not of the correct “caliber” is astonishing. You are easily the most manipulative, mean-spirited, ignorant, and useless person I have ever encountered either online or in person. And I’ve had your type for a neighbor, but even she didn’t elevate herself to imagine she is actually in a former president’s sphere. There is something very wrong with you. Very.

inspectorudy in reply to Juris Doctor. | August 27, 2023 at 10:32 pm

Why would you make such an absurd statement? Explain what you mean.

Purty kewl that Rupert had his two Jersey girls insist that the candidates talk about abortion during the debate

so the DOJs favorite candidate, Mike “the putz” Pence could paint the GOP into a corner

FOX is not on our side, they are traitors to America

DeSantis lost my vote with his AFP bullsheet that keeps appearing in my mail.

There are two ironies about the abortion issue. Absent Roe v Wade, Hillary Clinton would likely have won in 2016, as abortions are disproportionately concentrated among Blacks. Absent the Dobbs decision, Republicans would be more likely to win in 2024.

    Danny in reply to jb4. | August 27, 2023 at 8:46 pm

    I disagree.

Pro-life Republicans ranging from Ron DeSantis father of a major abortion restriction prior to the election, to governor Sununu father of the first New Hampshire abortion restriction since Roe was decided won their elections.

If we had nominated say the governor of Arizona in Arizona instead of a joke we would have won that senate seat.

2022 was entirely on us. While some candidates got hurt by abortion I don’t for a second think any NH voter was unaware that abortion would be a state issue after the verdict, or that the governor who signed anti-abortion legislation into law wasn’t pro-life (although he did a master class in double speak during the campaign).

I also don’t for a second think anybody in Wisconsin thinks Ron Johnson isn’t a very pro-life person.

Another run to save little d article

It’s kind of gotten ridiculous considering what our Country is doing to our real President

He’s only in the way

I do think DeSantis did a spectacular job on the last hurricane and expect the same this time around

That would be a more appropriate conversation

The saddest of Mother Nature unfortunate as it is , will help him in his quest

inspectorudy in reply to gonzotx. | August 27, 2023 at 10:41 pm

Even though you know he did a job in FL that no other governor has ever done you still insult him every time you mention his name. Do you have no sense of fair play of ethics? Because he is a candidate like every election cycle produces, for some reason you and your slimy friends have to insult this fine man over and over again. We know you will not vote for him but why the personal insults?

Dems will win in 2024 thanks to the 6-week abortion limit in various Republican states making menace to women the Republican brand.

Even with all the obvious obvious dem corruption, but it doesn’t rank over menace to women.

Danny in reply to rhhardin. | August 27, 2023 at 8:49 pm

So you have turned your back on the pro-life movement on the altar of the cult of Donald J Trump congratulations.

While you are busy scapegoating the pro-life movement might I remind you Donald Trump would not have won 2016 without single issue pro-life voters and frankly his loss of 2018, 2020, and 2022 was not on pro-life legislation it was on the fact that he is unpopular.

The portion of Americans who support the charges against him is a majority for each round of charges.

Let that sink in so your bullshit could leave you.

gonzotx in reply to Danny. | August 27, 2023 at 9:34 pm

Danny in reply to gonzotx. | August 28, 2023 at 8:05 am

What every poll shows is that ALL of the round of charges have majority public support.

You may define American as something other than the population of this country I don’t.

A majority of the population of this country supports the charges.

It is because Trump is extremely unpopular with most Americans.

You are free to still try your hardest to get the one who will see Joe Biden re-elected.

Danny in reply to gonzotx. | August 28, 2023 at 8:08 am

Furthermore your being an only Trumper flies in the face of your claiming to be pro-life.

If you are pro-life than those partisan judges Biden is nominating are a no go right?

Maybe supporting some senate candidates who could actually win, not backing people who will drag down an entire statewide ticket like Mastriano and not nominating someone who is polling low 40s against a vulnerable president while being at 100% name recognition would be a good idea yes?

I don’t care if the public is right, I care that it hates Donald Trump, and will not vote for him as demonstrated in 2022, 2020, and 2018, and even 2023.

Milhouse in reply to rhhardin. | August 28, 2023 at 2:39 pm

Banning abortion makes Republicans “a menace to women” in exactly the same way that banning slavery made them “a menace to white people”. Which is why the Republican party disappeared by 1870 and has not been heard from since.

Danny in reply to Milhouse. | August 28, 2023 at 10:59 pm

I am very glad you pointed that out.

I am not in any way disagreeing here (we have a disagreement about means but not ends) but I think we should all in light of the misogynistic idea that women and girls are sluts who want to have sex constantly then abort their children all remember that if we had to pick a leader of the pro-life movement her name would be Lila Rose

Objectively she has done more than anyone else to advance the pro-life cause.

I doubt it. That would make you a very far left Democrat, and while some of them are undoubtedly rooting for Trump to win the nomination, I doubt that many of them want him to actually become president again.

I actually don’t doubt it. Gonzo is apparently fine with suspending and/or tossing out the Constitution as Trump insisted was super fine and good . .. because, you know, reasons, and cheating. She’s also great with taking the guns first and worrying about due process second. She also LOVES being lied to over and over about locking Hillary up, draining the swamp, and crippling the deep state.

There is NOTHING Trump did, including his moronic handing of our economy and our nation’s well-being over to the genocidal Fauci gnome that will ever sway her. She has no principles, not moral compass, and zero patriotism. So, yeah, to her, anyone (like me) who has conservative principles, a moral compass, and is an actual patriot, is very very scary.

I keep asking myself why these Only Trumpers in our comment section are so vitriolic, so mean-spirited, and downright nasty about a GOP PRIMARY. I mean we all said we will vote for whomever the GOP nominee, right? Trump’s a bazillion points in the lead for the GOP primary. So why the attacks, the relentless nastiness and lies? Why the vitriol toward anyone who is not currently on the Trump Train but is more than willing to jump on it after the primaries? Why?

Telemachus in reply to gonzotx. | August 28, 2023 at 8:51 am

Considering the names I have been called here by the “circle”, I don’t really care about your pious opinion

RDS’s answer typifies why Republicans lose.

First, this in no longer a federal issue and RDS took the bait and answered with a typical politician “I personally know of”.

Second, and this is quite crucial that you probably missed: “We are not going to allow abortion all the way up till birth, and we will hold them accountable for their extremism.”

What is the non-extremism here? If you are not going to “ALLOW” abortion (see first point above) all the way up to birth, then how far will you ALLOW it?

His answer wasn’t as smart as you think. In fact, it made it much worse for Republicans down ballot. “How far will you allow it” will be a devastating question to congressional candidates.

    txvet2 in reply to George S. | August 28, 2023 at 1:10 pm

The question was answered when he signed legislation specifying a 6-week ban.

CommoChief in reply to George S. | August 28, 2023 at 1:18 pm

Nah on balance its fine. Those Congressional candidates run in congressional districts. So even in Illinois or NY there are Red districts. Obviously a red CD in NY isn’t quite the same in top to bottom beliefs as a Red CD in Alabama This allows the concept of Federalism to reign. Each State and CD for that matter is different. The candidates can now do their job of crafting the overall message on abortion, no extremism, to tailor it for their CD and State. Same for Senate candidates.

As much as we may want a ban on the National level it isn’t politically feasible at present. Federalism allows the States who’s electorates are ready to impose a very strict set of restrictions to do so. Federalism also prevents the d/prog from imposing a much looser standard that overrides the strict Red State standard. Federalism also works to defuse the idea of ‘radical religious GoP’ imposing their own standards in Congress at the national level.

But it is a federal issue, since Congress could pass a national ban, and there are prominent Republicans calling for it to do so. Indeed a prominent pro-life organization (I forget its name) is rating candidates on whether they would support such a national ban, and those saying that it’s a state matter are being given a big fact zero.

I am not in general pro-Nikki Haley but she was absolutely right to bring up the practical which I think puts an end to the idea of making it a federal issue.

For there to be any federal restriction means we already have won over such an overwhelming majority of the population on this issue that the states have already placed more serious abortion restrictions than whatever the federal government says.

What caused the federal government to ban slavery was 11 slave states seceding leaving the power of the slave owners shattered and even then it took a great deal of defeats on the ground along with victories and very heavy casualties before Lincoln could do anything with the federal government against slavery.

Without the Civil War slavery would have remained a state by state issue.

On principle you have a good point, in practice…..we need to keep our head out of the clouds and into victory.

What you described sounds a lot like Lincoln with the slavery issue.

Trump is at it again. He is now rumoring that RDS is going to drop out and run for the Senate against Scott. I just don’t get it. If RDS is such a loser as Trump declares him to be, why is he constantly making up lies about him?

At issue is he is not the ginormous he pretends to be (Neither was George W Bush or any of the other politicians with the normie act).

He studies other politicians even if nothing else and understands exactly how many of them seem to have an insurmountable primary advantage who then fall.

I.E. Howard Dean with I have a Scream, John Edwards starring in adultery while wife suffers major illness, or Giuliani starring in mayor of bubble burst and so on and so forth.

The public could turn on the drop of a hat so Trump’s agenda is total destruction of anyone they could potentially turn to.

For that reason don’t be discouraged the primary isn’t over whatever Gonzo says.
