NYC Mayor Adams Wants to Pay Residents to House Illegal Immigrants

NYC Mayor Adams Wants to Pay Residents to House Illegal Immigrants

Before you take a handout, please remember that a landlord or owner cannot change the locks and evict the tenant if the tenant has “lived in the home for more than 30 days.”

NYC Mayor Eric Adams floated the idea of paying local residents and landlords to house illegal immigrants this afternoon.

Adams already has a plan to house illegal immigrants in houses of worship:

“It is my vision to take the next step to this faith-based locales and then move to a private residence” Hizzoner said Monday during a City Hall press conference.

“We can take that $4.2 billion — $4.3 [billion] maybe now — that we anticipate we have to spend and we can put it back in the pockets of everyday, everyday houses of worship instead of putting it in the pockets of corporations.”

“We should be recycling our own dollars,” he added.

Adams said moving migrants into private homes is the next step in the administration’s blueprint to house the crush of homeless individuals, after unveiling a new plan to house single migrant men in 50 churches, mosques and other houses of worship across the five boroughs.

He acknowledged that City Hall would need to get over a “30 day rule” but would not elaborate on the rule or the necessary logistics to implement the plan.

Here is the 30 day rule regarding short-term rentals:

The law does not change the existing criteria that govern the legality of short-term rentals. Hosts (whether owners or tenants) cannot rent out an entire apartment or home to visitors for fewer than 30 days, even if the host owns or lives in the building. This applies to all permanent residential buildings regardless of the number of units. Short-term rentals are only permitted if the host is staying in the same unit or apartment as the guests, and there are no more than two guests staying with the host. All other laws relating to the use of the space must also be followed (i.e. no sleeping in an area where it would be illegal to do so, such as an attic, cellar, or garage).

The law limits registration to people that occupy a unit of housing, and prohibits OSE [Office of Special Enforcement] from granting a registration for certain types of units, such as rent-regulated and NYCHA [New York City Housing Authority] units. The law also requires registration requests to be denied for buildings on a prohibited buildings list, which will be created by owners who notify OSE that short-term rentals are not allowed in their buildings.

Before you take a handout, please remember that a landlord or owner cannot change the locks and evict the tenant if the tenant has “lived in the home for more than 30 days.”

A Marshal, Sheriff, or Constable can evict the tenant after the landlord wins “a judgment against” the tenant.

Texas has sent illegal immigrants to New York City for over a year since Adams declared it a sanctuary city.

The city has received over 72,000 people during that time.

NYC is busting at the seams:

“We need to be clear, this is not sustainable with the inflow that we’re receiving,” a desperate Adams explained.

The mayor said the city will work to “find a way” to get around city government rules that typically bar the city from housing homeless people in private homes.

It just gets crazier.

So it’s mi casa su casa?

Why not cots in some of the many vacant office buildings? Anyone who signs on for this program is Cray Cray b/c sure as sunshine the govt will jack it up and leave you stuck with unwanted tenants at some point.

Would you buy this used car from the same gang of idiots who brought you “rent control?”

No kidding. I got to thinking about all the ways this is gonna go wrong. Some resident decides why not and takes in someone but then their Condo Assn raises Cain but too late it’s past 30 days and the resident nor the Condo Assn can kick them out; they gotta go through the eviction process. But the Condo Assn fines the resident per day for the violation, except the resident has sublet the unit from the owner who is FL or AZ and has no idea WTF is going on until they start getting demand letters for payment. This is going to be a nightmare b/c of NYC Byzantine housing rules.

    Why just vacant office buildings?

CommoChief in reply to LeftWingLock. | June 6, 2023 at 1:09 pm

Vacant office space within a building seems fine to me as well. I’m sure the credentialed laptop class in NYC won’t mind sharing elevators and bathrooms.

Why not? The red tape will be horrendous because of zoning. Going from commercial use to residential use is the fly-in-the-ointment. Under zoning laws an owner cannot just decide to do a change of use.

Why not send them home. The videos I see on the news show mostly single young men…not the families we are told that are coming here….Send them home to fight for their own countries.

UnCivilServant | June 5, 2023 at 5:30 pm

It would be cheaper just to ship them all home.

Subotai Bahadur | June 5, 2023 at 5:30 pm

72,000 hostile foreign invaders shipped from Texas to New York City in a year. That is pitiful. It needs to be doubled or tripled. Texas can fund some more bus tickets. There can be a national donations campaign to pay for more [and secondary campaigns to send them to Chicago, DC, and Boston].

U-haul is having trouble getting trucks back to those cities because their residents are moving back to America. Their rates going north are a lot less than those going south. Take advantage of that and send them back north filled with invaders. Which will have the advantage of helping American refugees in northern cities come home.

Make these Leftist cities endure what they have made border states endure. Let MS-13 fight it out with BLM for control of the Leftist’s city streets.

“”72,000 hostile foreign invaders shipped from Texas to New York City in a year. That is pitiful. It needs to be doubled or tripled.””

You are absolutely welcome to contribute as much money as you can afford to this project, since the taxpayers of Texas are already on the hook for the 72K we’ve already shipped.

Subotai Bahadur in reply to txvet2. | June 5, 2023 at 5:41 pm

Very seriously, is there a Texas government office taking such contributions? If there is [and in the piece above I assumed there wasn’t] they need to publicize it. And yes, while it may not be much, I probably would send something.

    Subotai Bahadur

There is/was a fund dedicated to help pay for our border control expenses and I provided that address to Gonzo some time ago. (I didn’t bookmark it and don’t remember what it was.) I doubt that they got many takers/givers. Texas has no state income tax, so you can;t contribute that way like you can with federal taxes. My taxes (except sales tax) are collected by my county tax assessor/collector. Let me do a little research with the Texas SoS and Treasurer’s offices to see if I can come up with something.

That’s just Gonzo. You always discount the downvotes by one. I note that there don’t seem to be any takers, especially among the ones who complain the most about Texas not doing enough about the border.

          CommoChief in reply to txvet2. | June 6, 2023 at 3:58 pm

Takers? Nah. The loudest voices in complaint always seem to want someone else to do something but get bent sideways when they are asked to join in or step up themselves.

“the taxpayers of Texas are already on the hook for the 72K we’ve already shipped.”

Every other option would have cost the taxpayers of Texas MORE than shipping.

      txvet2 in reply to henrybowman. | June 6, 2023 at 2:15 pm

I’m not going to argue that one way or the other. If the Feds were doing their job, we wouldn’t be paying for it either way.

Try to get them out of the house or apartment once in. How many families to an apartment? Ask the Soviet survivors.

Thad Jarvis | June 5, 2023 at 6:27 pm

“Greatest city in the world!” 😂

Why not just make it mandatory? Every unused bedroom is going to be occupied by an “undocumented immigrant”.

Some more people will leave New York, but it’s not like the diehard liberals there will leave. In fact, raise their taxes another 10% there. The old matrons in the richest parts of Manhattan (who have never worked a day in their lives) won’t care.

Why ASK people to take them in? All those rich lefties in Manhattan and Brooklyn vote leftist and support sanctuary cities. I am sure they would all be HAPPY to take in a family and virtue practice instead of just virtue signal.

Short answer …..NO!
On second thought, I will lease to the city for a paltry $500 per night with all maintenance and repairs and utilities at the expense of the city.
I’m going to FLORIDA.

Gracie Mansion has a lot of room.

Have at it, rent out your home to criminals.
Hey that’s a thought NY, start housing inmates in private homes.

Every New York City voter should be required to house an illegal alien in their home. No option.

Every NYC high rise should accommodate as many of the illegals as possible. If anyone has children that have separate bedrooms, those children should be doubled up.

After all, if the illegals aren’t comfortable, NYC isn’t doing enough.

And no birching and complaining when property is stolen or destroyed, or women raped. It comes as a package deal.

Don’t like my reality check, that sounds like a you problem.

Suburban Farm Guy | June 5, 2023 at 11:11 pm

When you’re up to your as s in illegal immigrants, it’s difficult to remember that the initial objective was to virtue signal and talk trash about red states

xleatherneck | June 6, 2023 at 7:54 am

Watch for the Democrats to start talking about the third amendment.
That is where mandatory residential housing will spring from.

Sternverbs in reply to xleatherneck. | June 6, 2023 at 8:53 am

You may be on to something there, since all democrats are clearly above the law (pointing to the “…as prescribed by law” part).

Fill up the schools, the churches, hotels and now private homes- Gov Abbott please keep shipping them to NYC and other sanctuary states. This is exactly what they voted for. What could possibly go wrong?
Here in Portland our brilliant Mayor Ted Wheeler came up with a solution to solve the problem of thousands of homeless drug addicts taking over every nook & cranny of Oregon: they can only camp between 8pm and 8am and he wants the police to start ticketing the violators. These elites have taxpayer-funded security, live nowhere near the chaos and want to take our guns. This is what I say: Mayor Adams & Wheeler- you go first, move them into your homes, neighborhoods and get rid of your 24 security. Lead by example.

How many illegals could he house at Gracie Mansion?

Capitalist-Dad | June 6, 2023 at 9:19 am

Hilarious! What could go wrong? But I’m surprised the leftist crooks didn’t just pass a law that appropriates “excess space.” After all, if a couple owns a four bedroom home that’s three bedrooms more than they “need.” It’s the logical next step from “income redistribution” (read looting) to “share” excess property.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to just catapult them all back to their own countries, I rhetorically ask? Of course, money’s no object when it’s not coming from their own pockets, nor are the big spenders made accountable while wasting our tax dollars. What a G damn shame that these interlopers take precedence over our own citizens, especially our veterans. By the way, Mayor, how many ILLEGALS are you taking in at Gracie Mansion?

Based on this photo, my first thought is, ‘Mayor, blink three times if you’re being held hostage,’

Fat_Freddys_Cat | June 6, 2023 at 8:03 pm

It’s easy to see how this will play out.

Guilty liberal white woman signs up. Three tattooed thugs show up at her door. As they leer at her body she whines “But wait! I specified only one! And a woman!”

“Si, senorita. We all identify as women.”

And good luck getting them evicted.
