DeSantis Defunds “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” Bureaucracies in Florida Public Universities

“As practiced, DEI represents discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination — and this has no place in a public institution.”

We have long been flagging how Ron DeSantis had a plan to reverse the institutional capture of Florida’s university system in a way that likely would survive court challenge, DeSantis Permitted To Gather Data On “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” in Public Universities, Judge Rules (emphasis added)

… DeSantis has required Florida public higher education institutions to provide data on the funds and programming supporting DEI.

The request for information did not require the institutions to do anything more than report information, though it seems obvious that DeSantis is likely to gut the DEI bureaucracies, which would seem a way to achieve part of what The Stop Woke Act was intended to do. Terminating administrative positions, or cutting funding, would not implicate — or at least not directly — the First Amendment concerns that applied to what faculty could teach.

Is the federal court really going to micro-manage the Florida state higher education budgets and tell the state it cannot cut back on the number of Assistant and Associate Deans for DEI, and various underlings in the bureaucracy? Maybe, but that’s a big stretch, much more so than telling the state it cannot dictate what professors say in class. Cutting back or eliminating the DEI bureaucracy also would be more effective than telling professors what to teach, since the DEI campus machinery reaches all aspects of student life, not just coursework.

And then it came to pass when DeSantis proposed a higher education reform package last January:

The budgets for DEI are gone:

  • Prohibiting higher education institutions from using any funding, regardless of source, to support DEI, CRT, and other discriminatory initiatives;

And the ideological litmus test of DEI hiring statements are gone:

  • Prohibiting postsecondary institutions from using discriminatory political filters, including political loyalty oaths and DEI statements, in the hiring process;

This will wipe out the DEI bureaucracy.

Today DeSantis signed the law at New College, which DeSantis previously had Appointed Chris Rufo and Other Conservatives To Transform Lefty “New College” Into The Hillsdale of Florida:

This is amazing.

I’ve lectured and written many times how higher education cannot be transformed from within, there has to be outside action. The bureaucracies, particulary as to DEI, are too entrenched and powerful, as are the ideologically one-sided faculty, senior administrators, and Trustees.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is showing how transformation is possible. His “Stop Woke Act” may or may not survive judicial review (so far not), but he’s taking a more productive route that needs to be emulated in all red states: Take on the bureaucracy at every level….

Today DeSantis announced a total “lol” move that legit made me laugh. He appointed Chris Rufo and two other conservatives to the Board of Trustees of New College of Florida, a small public lefty college modeled on northeastern liberal colleges. I looked into it when applying to college in the late 1970’s, at which point it was relatively new; I don’t even remember if I applied.

DeSantis tweeted about the signing from his official account:

In Florida, our higher education institutions will not be spending public dollars on “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” or other initiatives that promote an ideological agenda. As practiced, DEI represents discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination — and this has no place in a public institution.

We have seen examples of schools requiring students and professors to commit to DEI and CRT theories before they are admitted or hired at a university – a de facto political loyalty oath. DEI can no longer be used as a woke litmus test as a condition of entrance into higher education in Florida.

Here’s the entire press conference:

You’re right. Of course DeSantis, once again, takes action to defeat the left.

And no nonsense about four dimensional chess to do it.

      Imagine hating DeSantis –
and his succession of wins policy and statute victories – because Democrat politicians and bureaucrats used immoral and illegal means to destroy Trump.

That’s the ugly face of the MAGA Purity Police.

You forget to mention revenge. Revenge is an emotional response that doesn’t work at the ballot box.

And the wailing on twitter is glorious!

DeSantis was my congressman and was at best sub par. As governor, he will have forever changed Florida for the better. Now just have to get him to push Open Carry and Ivermectin to be bought over the counter but the Liberal useless Senate Republicans stand in our way.

Money is fungible. Banning the use of state dollars for DEI just makes them move the programs to a different column.

Getting rid of a large number of administrative positions at each university in the state system will do the rest.

retiredcantbefired | May 15, 2023 at 11:13 pm

State universities don’t need most of their non-DIE administrative positions…

DEI reminds me of the nine-headed Hydra in “The Odyssey” by Homer. Defunding DEI is an excellent first step, but it is probably not dead in Florida by a long shot. There are more heads to be lopped off, and if not done quickly, some will grow back.

DeSantis has clout on his own turf in Florida to get items removed from the budget. Someone should ask him what he would do about DEI on the federal level.

Likely the same sort thing. The next POTUS could simply eliminate the DEI positions across the Federal Govt or refuse to fill the vacancies. Then eliminate ability for any department or agency to spend any funds on DEI or conduct training of DEI without specific approval of the POTUS, which won’t be forthcoming. It really isn’t all that hard. The POTUS has plenty of discretion to do those things, especially with a compliant HoR.

Or better yet, eliminate the Dept of Education altogether. It’s not a federal function to begin with and its existence allows federal social engineering to be forced onto schools.

If he were to be “placed” in the position, he won’t be doing much until told by his handlers it’s ok, so you would be better to ask Griffin and his billionaire buddies that very question

CommoChief in reply to gonzotx. | May 16, 2023 at 5:41 pm

      gonzotx,

Ok got it, if billionaires contribute to a candidate’s campaign that automatically means the candidate is gonna do their bidding.

Therefore since billionaires contribute to DeSantis that automatically means he is compromised.

      But wait! There’s more!

In 2020 Trump didn’t contribute a dime to his re-election campaign. In fact at least 133 super wealthy and their spouses made contributions to Trump’s re-election. Some gave more and some gave less but on average they donated $285,000 each.

Many of those same billionaires also gave to the various pro Trump PACs. One billionaire gave $90 Million, another gave $21 Million, a third gave $10 Million.

Your argument seems to be that accepting campaign money from billionaires automatically compromises a candidate, rendering them sell outs to rich, powerful vested interests.

Either apply the same standard to Trump or stop your prattle about campaign contributions.

You do realize the billionaire you are dehumanizing and using as a boogeyman is on a crusade against CRT and DEI and that if we had 100 more of him we would be in a fantastic position right?

Take your bolshevism somewhere else. The man you are demonizing is a good man.

You used to say his name before I started calling you out but just so people know this is the person Gonzo is insisting will force DeSantis to be pro-CRT

A billionaire at war with woke ideology is good, enough selective bolshevism.

Got give it to Gov. DeSantis. He is one gutsy guy.

DEI. This diversity isn’t diverse, this equity isn’t equitable, and this inclusion necessarily excludes some.

This is what fighting looks like, and it involves our own use of government.
