Climate Change Activists Now Going After Rice – A Staple That Feeds Billions

“They say flooded rice fields, which then naturally ferment hay and other plants, produce too much methane.”

The climate change obsessed left is now coming after rice, a food product that keeps billions of people worldwide from starving to death.

Between this and their efforts to go after fossil fuels, it really seems like these folks want people to starve and freeze.

Katie Pavlich writes at Townhall:

The Climate Lunatics Have a New Food Target

Climate change lunatics who want to ban beef and force everyone to eat bugs have a new target.

According to AFP news, climate “scientists” are targeting rice farming as a “dangerous,” emissions heavy practice. They say flooded rice fields, which then naturally ferment hay and other plants, produce too much methane.

According to National Geographic, rice is a main and key food source for 3.5 billion people.

“Rice is a food staple for more than 3.5 billion people around the world, particularly in Asia, Latin America, and parts of Africa. Rice has been cultivated in Asia for thousands of years. Scientists believe people first domesticated rice in India or Southeast Asia. Rice arrived in Japan in about 3,000 years ago. The Portuguese most likely introduced it into South America in the 16th century,” the magazine reports. “Today, the world’s largest rice producers are China, India, and Indonesia. Outside of Asia, Brazil is the largest rice producer. Rice grows in warm, wet climates. It thrives in waterlogged soil, such as in the flood plains of Asian rivers like the Ganges and the Mekong. “Deepwater rice” is a variety of rice that is adapted to deep flooding, and is grown in eastern Pakistan, Vietnam, and Burma.”

This is madness.

The climate change crowd seems to like controlling what people eat.

Here’s another example from the Gothamist:

NYC will target food choices in its battle against climate change

The Adams administration has announced a plan to begin tracking the carbon footprint created by household food consumption as well as a new target for New York City agencies to reduce their food-based emissions by 33% by the year 2023.

Mayor Eric Adams announced the plan on Monday along with the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice as part of the city’s ongoing pledge to reduce the impact of climate change. At the same event, the Mayor’s Office of Climate & Environmental Justice published a new chart in the city’s annual greenhouse gas inventory that publicly tracks the carbon footprint created by household food consumption — primarily generated by meat and dairy products…

Adams, an ardent evangelist of plant-based diets, announced the new tracker and policy at a Brooklyn culinary center run by Health + Hospitals, the city’s public health care system.

“It is easy to talk about emissions that are coming from vehicles and how it impacts our carbon footprint,“ Adams said. “But we now have to talk about beef.”

They won’t be happy until we’re all living in caves, eating bugs.

Perhaps they can glue themselves to a rice paddy.

A significant amount of powerful people want there to be fewer humans.
Self-sterilization, assisted suicide, famine, war… whatever works.

I can think of about half of the country that I wish didn’t exist.

Doesn’t mean I want to turn into a virtue-signaling Karen that tries to enforce my will on people.

The eugenics movement is alive and well in this country, and has been for over 100yrs. It’s an evil movement that wants to destroy all of mankind including the rich/powerful clowns that are useful idiots in serving the wrong master. Payback is going to be a bitch.

I think that assisted suicide for the climate change activists would neatly solve the climate change problem.

BierceAmbrose in reply to JohnC. | April 19, 2023 at 10:35 pm

There’s already gonna be fewer humans, in pretty short order. Demographics are a thing. They literally have to do nothing and this takes care of itself.

I wish I believed they knew this, and were just cynically getting in front of a “problem” to take credit for the “solution.” Of course, they’re cynical enough. There’s no way they’re that smart, though.

First these Dumb-o-crat/Leftist bastards got rid of Uncle Ben — now they’re after his rice.

“Unless you want mass starvation.”

Well, yes. That’s exactly what they want. They have made it clear that the goal is to reduce to world’s population to no more than 500 million. Cf. late unlamented Georgia Guidestones. But starvation is but only one arrow in their genocide quiver. Feminism, trannies, disease, abortion, and of course, war, are all on the table as means to get there.

This is an existential threat, and it’s time to respond accordingly.

“The won’t be happy until we’re all living in caves, eating bugs.”

Nope, its about ridding Mother Gaia of most of the human race, leaving only her acolytes and a handful of slaves to take care of them.

These pustules on the body politic think that somehow they will be able to maintain their comfy high-tech lifestyles while eating a plant-based diet (which is largely factory-made food) after ridding themselves of 90%of all those smelly humans who interfere with their fantasies of rural life in an unspoiled paradise.

They don’t expect to be eating plant-based themselves.

randian in reply to utroukx. | April 19, 2023 at 12:51 am

Some of the zealots do. It’s clear from their rhetoric that they consider veganism morally superior, so much so they see it as their duty to impose veganism on everyone else.

They are way down the food chain (as it were) from the powers that are actually pushing all this. The zealots are the useful idiots, not the self-proclaimed masters of the universe. And the latter, as utroukx correctly notes, certainly do not intend to eat plant-based (or bug-based).

Sternverbs in reply to utroukx. | April 19, 2023 at 9:08 am

They’ll be lucky if they’re not EATEN themselves, when the hoi polloi are without alternatives.

No bugs or poop water for them.

They will keep just enough Epsilons to handle the dirty jobs.

randian in reply to nordic prince. | April 19, 2023 at 12:53 am

Who will handle the “smart” jobs? The problem with crashing the population is you’re left with much fewer geniuses, and these people aren’t those geniuses themselves.

CommoChief in reply to Ironclaw. | April 18, 2023 at 8:26 pm

By whom? The peasantry of course. That’s where we are headed; sliver of aristocracy at the top and a limited number in the favored classes. A clerisy to run day to day operations and a sufficient number of men at arms to enforce their writ. There remainder of the populace will toil in the mines, fields and the very few factories which will remain.

nordic prince | April 18, 2023 at 11:50 am

Thousands of years, but now rice is suddenly “dangerous.”

It’s not about global cooling warming climate change whatever it’s called now. It never was.

They want you DEAD.

Maybe the government of Guyana can offer the climate cult a nice little tract of land.

Thad & Ahad, you two beat me to it!

They want us on a Diet of Worms and Soylent Green.

smalltownoklahoman | April 18, 2023 at 12:58 pm

“They won’t be happy until we’re all living in caves, eating bugs.”

They won’t be happy even then, their mania precludes them being happy as long as humanity exists. Certainly stuff like this lends credence to beliefs that they want massive widespread famine and much of humanity wiped out.

Voice_of_Reason | April 18, 2023 at 1:11 pm

Yes, it’s much “safer” for the ecosystem and climate if 60% of the people starve to death because in the globalists secular religion of earth worship, people are a plague to the earth.

Especially all those icky people in fly-over countries and in places without Whole Foods markets. Let them eat organic crudités or die.

amatuerwrangler | April 18, 2023 at 1:54 pm

Question: Does a rotting corpse produce methane? If so, how much? As compared to an acre of rice paddy.

In broad brush, have they offered a solution to all those dead bodies once the starvation reaches critical mass? The last I heard, the modern day crematorium is fired be natural gas; will solar and wind produce enough electricity to run a carbon-arc crematorium? Otherwise, that’s a lot of pick-and-shovel work and the people who do that will be the ones doing the dying .

Inquiring minds want to know….

Planned Populationhood.

That said, to be fair, fat and protein are healthier sources of essential nutrients.

Oh, FFS. Enough of this idiocy already.

Uh huh.

Have you insufferable cretins run this theory by China yet? You know, the most populous nation on Earth and one largely driven on a rice diet?

Then again, since no other global warming restrictions seem to apply to them and a heap of your funding comes from them maybe you just didn’t want to bring it up?

Can we grind up useless international bureaucrats into fertilizer? There are way too many credentialed imbeciles who insist on being the answer to the questions nobody asked,

For a commited Climate Worshiper, starving a couple of billion people to save Gia, is a feature, not a bug.

This is junk science writ large

“How does one man assert his power over another, Winston?“

Winston thought. “By making him suffer”, he said.

“Exactly. By making him suffer. Obedience is not enough. Unless he is suffering, how can you be sure that he is obeying your will and not his own? Power is in inflicting pain and humiliation. Power is in tearing human minds to pieces and putting them together again in new shapes of your own choosing. -George Orwell, 1984

sestamibi in reply to Evil Otto. | April 19, 2023 at 9:21 am

The image of the future is a boot stamping on a human face–forever.

Orwell didn’t consider that the boot might be a stiletto heel and the face would have a beard. Think about it.

Hardly shocking, considering what they’re doing in The Netherlands, and the WEF campaign to eliminate meat (except, presumably, for elites like themselves) in favor of “alternate protein provisioning” like insects, which our digestive systems are not adapted to handle.

We are better off suffering the effects of Global Warming if any, than giving the.progressive fascists control over every aspect of our economy so they can fight it. This is the path to tyranny.

The Constitution and the Republic are dead when every mayor in every Dem city can order people to do what they say.

Sternverbs in reply to boulder. | April 19, 2023 at 9:21 am

Even here in deepest, redest Arkansas, the cities are run by Marxocrats. Little Rock, Fayetteville, Pine Bluff, Fort Smith, Springdale, etc. Very FEW of the city governments are run by political or fiscal conservatives. It is inevitable (without illegal insurrection) that representative republic government will fail because of the “will of the people” who slither about in, er, um, inhabit, our cities.

Critical edit – The problem is WARMISM..
The totalitarian left chases any excuse to grasp power. The latest fail is global warming. Disproven. So now they seek to call it “cllimate change.”
Deny the cheat.
Insist on “failed warmism.”
Goes all the way back. 1987 communism failed. After that, left has tried global cooling, nuclear winter, ozone layer, frogs, fruit flies, bees, snail darter, and other eco-frauds.
Then sex and race: LGB, BLM CRT, DEI, Most recently “trans…”
Anything to divide, foster resentment, envy, jealousy, hatred.
Don’t let them cheat.

At least a billion “useless eaters” shall be eliminated by the year 2050 by means of limited wars, organized epidemics af fatal rapid-acting diseases and starvation. Energy, food and water shall be kept at subsistence levels for the non-elite, starting with the White populations of Western Europe and North America and then spreading to other races. The population of Canada, Western Europe and the United States will be decimated more rapidly than on other continents, until the world’s population reaches a manageable level of 1 billion, of which 500 million will consist of Chinese and Japanese races, selected because they are people who have been regimented for centuries and who are accustomed to obeying authority without question.

More proof that “climate change” is all about people control.

BierceAmbrose | April 19, 2023 at 10:36 pm

I don’t so much mind when they act out their self-loathing on themselves. Sometimes it’s amusing. I do mind when they act it out on me.

Mike LaChance: The climate change obsessed left is now coming after rice, a food product that keeps billions of people worldwide from starving to death.

That’s not what the AFP News story {corrected link} is about. Most of the methane from rice production is produced by bacteria growing in the straw that is left behind after harvest. Vietnam is part of a project to remove the straw and turn it into organic fertilizer or to grow mushrooms. That reduces methane emissions while producing the same amount of rice, decreasing smoke pollution, and increasing profitability.
