Maryland Teacher Urges ‘War Against Capitalism,’ Brags About Indoctrinating Students

“Revolutions involve violence.”

Rebeca F. Rothstein, a middle school teacher in Bethesda, MD, urged people to start a war against capitalism.

From Fox News:

The teacher, Rebeca F. Rothstein, works at North Bethesda Middle School in the Montgomery County School District and believes educators should use their classrooms to turn kids into anti-racist activists. She was an avid TikTok poster until Fox News Digital reached out about her comment on violent revolutions; her account was no longer active as of Monday.

“As a teacher I wish we could do more with our students like teach anti-racism and how to be kind people. Does anyone else feel like… we can skip the math, skip the science, like we’ll do that next year. Maybe this year we focus on teaching our youth how to be anti-racist,” she said on TikTok.

Rothstein doesn’t keep it a secret that she indoctrinates her students:

Rothstein also posted about providing “Marxist literature” to kids and said, “F*ck capitalism.” She shared in one instance that she was “tired after a long day of indoctrinating students.”

“I had to un-brainwash myself from capitalism in order to fall in love with socialism and communism,” she said. “If everyone had the same amount of money, then money wouldn’t be worth anything.”

“Capitalism must go,” she said. In that same video she said, “revolutions involve violence.” The background music said, “Ain’t nothing wrong with that.”

The district ignored multiple requests for comment about her quote on violent revolutions and whether they support the rhetoric.

Absolutely bet on it. She lives in a nearly half million dollar home in a DC suburb and makes almost three times what the high average math teacher makes in a Marxist country. She should be fired for her outrageous posts not because of her political stance but for her foul manner of expression and clear disdain for her students.

Lot of smug to slap off that face.

At one time years ago, I considered myself lucky to have come up K-12 through public schools.

Times have changed. That was before the teaching profession became just another public union gig.

WTPuck in reply to Ghostrider. | March 14, 2023 at 10:27 am

My parents sent all six (!) of us to Catholic schools, K-12. I don’t know how anyone could afford that now, but my forty-something year old high school diploma is worth a lot more than any college degree that’s not a hard science/math/engineering degree.

    diver64 in reply to Ghostrider. | March 14, 2023 at 2:35 pm

I had a whole lot of leftist teachers in the late 60’s through the 70’s including my 2cd grade teacher who I found out was a lesbian 40yrs later just like it should be as that was not relevant to a 7yr old. I don’t remember any indoctrination in the classrooms at all including high school. In fact, I don’t remember any talk of politics outside of civics classes or sexuality outside of health class.

      rwingjr in reply to diver64. | March 14, 2023 at 10:37 pm

You must be about the same age as me. Don’t you remember the anti-war protests? How about the civil rights movement? Save the Whales? There were some movements back then, but really few teachers pushed it. Our school had one teacher with long hair and blue jeans and peace symbols on his car, but he didn’t teach it. Nearly 50 years after graduating, I found out the school librarian and art teacher lived together and were lesbians. We read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn with the “n” word. It’s forbidden now. We also read “1984” and now we’re living it.

JackinSilverSpring | March 13, 2023 at 10:07 pm

If she doesn’t like capitalism, why doesn’t she relocate to Cuba, or CCP China, or North Korea? She won’t need to indoctrinate anyone there?

It might be time for school boards to review what is going on in the classroom and in which specific classrooms the wannabe revolutionaries inhabit. It wouldn’t take much effort to search the social media of these folks.

The movement has begun in earnest to counter the poison that Soros inspired.

stevewhitemd in reply to CommoChief. | March 14, 2023 at 10:42 am

Actually, it would take much of an effort.

You run a school district with (say) 2,000 children. That’s how many teachers — perhaps 100 to 140? Plus administrators and so on. You’re going to search the social media of each one? How much time do you have?

And if you farm it out to someone (a contractor, consultant, etc.,) then over time those people are subject to ‘regulatory capture’ and are going to be worthless — they’ll be just like the teachers you’re screening. You can’t expect Tik-Tok users to rat each other out.

So no, it will take considerable effort to search the social media. That’s why no one does it.

CommoChief in reply to stevewhitemd. | March 14, 2023 at 2:01 pm

Disagree. These sorts of bizzaro posts from wierdo teachers aren’t exactly hidden. So cursory search is relatively easy.

120 minutes spent looking at teacher Twitter, TicToc and FB gives the searcher 40 minutes on each platform. That’s plenty of time to look for crazy to note and come back to for follow up.

Say the school has 120 teachers. That’s 14,400 minutes required for this initial task. So 240 total hours needed. Divide that up by just 24 parents and you have 10 hours each. That’s not a big lift.

Spend the first weekend on the initial search and the second weekend on the followup of noted crazy posts. Heck you could do 10 hours on a Saturday then do the followup deeper dive on the crazy the next day. Spend the next three evenings writing it up and submit to internal review and editing the next two days; Thursday and Friday.

Prepare final draft the following Saturday and rehearse the presentation for both school board meeting and media presentation on Sunday afternoon. Final rehearsal on Monday and present to school board on their Tuesday meeting.

Less than two weeks start to finish. It isn’t complicated but it does require organization, preparation and willingness to do one’s part.

Close The Fed in reply to stevewhitemd. | March 14, 2023 at 3:42 pm

Local parent groups could do this. Each could simply check the profiles of just the teachers of their own children and then share info.

    diver64 in reply to CommoChief. | March 14, 2023 at 2:37 pm

Always amazes me how quickly these teachers yank down their online presence when it’s broadcasted for everyone to see. Almost like they are hiding something and not the actions of people proud of what they are posting or saying.

George_Kaplan | March 13, 2023 at 10:12 pm

“If everyone had the same amount of money, then money wouldn’t be worth anything.”?!?!?

Rothstein is showing her fundamental ignorance. Money already isn’t worth anything – a bit of paper, a bit of ink etc. It functions as a medium of exchange via the value society places on it and other things, both physical and not – work, ideas etc.

Magically equalising the amount of money each individual has wouldn’t change anything – people would still rely on money, or a substitute form of money, to function as means of exchange so as to pay for work, to buy goods, or to trade for property.

The only way to make money worthless is to have government control the entire economy, allocate resources to each individual, and prohibit any sort of variation, free will, or personal choice. Not even the Soviet Union or Maoist China managed that.

History is certainly not her area of expertise, if she has one.

      polly_mathick in reply to WTPuck. | March 14, 2023 at 12:50 pm

Beyond the valid points you made, let’s also point out that just because at some point in time everyone had the same amount of money, that does not make the money worthless. But IMO her real idiocy lies in the conceit that once she has achieved her utopian condition of everyone having equal money it will magically persist indefinitely. I mean, ok, you have your utopia, now run your little scenario forward just one step: is anyone allowed to spend his money? Won’t that immediately break the utopia? What if someone doesn’t want to buy anything but someone else does? What if different products require different inputs (materials, labor, etc.) and therefore cost different amounts? How can one guy buy chewing gum and the next guy buy a car without wrecking her prefect little world? We could go on at length ridiculing her facile economic views. They are really not even coherent enough to lend themselves to serious, rigorous analysis. Taking them seriously is just like arguing how the horn on unicorns evolved. But in one sense we must take them and her seriously, because she has a comfortable government perch from which to influence impressionable children with her nonsensical ideas, and there exist a vast network of these blithering idiots doing their utmost to foment Marxist revolution, despite the unbroken series of unmitigated horrors it has unleashed on the countries and peoples of the world.

I think there are two main types of these revolutionaries:

      1) intelligent people who cultivate a juvenile, resentful hate of capitalist culture (and therefore their own cultures) and who appreciate the systematizing, ersatz scientism of Marxism, which gathers all phenomena into its framework and pretends to the power of prediction of human affairs. They desire to replace traditional culture, rooted in religion and common sense, with a perfected novus homo supplicated to his class. These people struggle mightily to avoid the fact that Marxism is just a secular religion, and its nostrums and eschatology are utterly devoid of scientific content. Just glance over the voluminous Marxist literature, so much of which apes the forms of science. (I highly advise against reading it in full—I’ve attempted multiple, highly frustrating forays into the sense thicket—as its interminable, abstruse jargonizing will make you want to poke out your eyes. Other than reading the man himself, better to survey the sum product of Marxist thought with a trusty guide like Sir Scruton (Fools, Frauds, and Firebrands), Karl Popper (try Popper Selections, edited by Miller), or Stephen Hicks (Explaining Postmodernism).)

      2) economically illiterate ”idealists” who also have a juvenile emotional connection to the idealism of Marxism but don’t bother with theory. Something about Marxism speaks to them, and they seem to believe it will wash away all the sins of the world. These people are operating at the level of John Lennon’s “Imagine” and it has proved over and over again very difficult to penetrate their forcefield of ignorance with facts and logic. Exhibit A today is this teacher fantasizing about everyone having the same amount of money.

Both types generally issue from comfortable bourgeois circumstances—another wellspring for their juvenile resentments. Unfortunately, it appears that a feature of capitalism’s success is a fat pipeline of delusional LARPing revolutionaries.

Nevertheless, you will continue to find all manner of Marxist merchandise on offer in the store, from The Communist Manifesto to Ché’s ugly mug emblazoned on countless consumer products. As a wag once noted, capitalism thus employs the critique designed to destroy it.

As ludicrous as these people are, it’s important always to make the arguments against their nonsense so that the persuadable bulk of humanity can appreciate both choices (capitalism vs. collectivism) in the fullness of their consequences.

        henrybowman in reply to polly_mathick. | March 14, 2023 at 4:49 pm

“Something about Marxism speaks to them, and they seem to believe it will wash away all the sins of the world.”
Almost invariably, it’s the ability to call upon someone else’s money or labor for their own use, whenever they believe they deserve it.

      diver64 in reply to WTPuck. | March 14, 2023 at 2:39 pm

Which is itself the answer.

Some revolutions involve TP and eggs.

I would love for people like that to be forced to live in the kind of society they’re pushing for for at least a year, then see if they have modified their stance.

After the praise heaped on Chavez by the usuals suspects, it should be the go to place for aspiring Marxists.

Marxist Seminaries indoctrination kids into the Marxist religion.
Every generation wants another shot at Karl Marx utopia. No country ever got there, 100s of Millions murdered, but they want to try again.

Public schools are satan’s youth ministry.

We’re giving her too much credit. There’s no thought involved here, only the mindless repetition of dogma. Orwell called it “duckspeak.” She hasn’t considered any countering ideas, and if you were to try and debate her you would receive nothing but angry jargon in return. She hasn’t even reached the level of the Marxists revolutionaries of old, because they at least understood that violence was a two-way street. She believes that her side gets to use violence without it being inflicted upon her.

And gee, I wonder where she could have picked up that idea…

I continue to be baffled as to how people like this feel safe given their public statements. Is anybody home down there in Maryland? Or don’t ya care?

gee do you think the FBI got wind of this? and will do something about it?

We fought communists in Korea
Viet Nam
Granada
El Salvador
Cuba
Venezuela
Etc. (We lost or are losing, nearly every time)
Heck, Reagan fought communism by collapsing what he saw as the Mother Lode, the USSR. Guess what…

None of this makes any difference if we can’t defeat Communism in our own society, our schools (Columbia, anyone?), our neighbors and relatives — both my brother and sister are nearly as flaming as the subject of this piece. You can’t kill an idea with bombs. We need a new approach. Domino theories no good. There’s something in the human psyche that makes communism seem good and viable. Maybe we work on that. Somehow

It is a “bloody shovel” that reappears over and over. Killing millions and digging graves, filling them in again. A calm settles briefly before a new generation finds the ‘shovel’ and repeats history.

I wonder what kind of putz disagrees with this?

I talk to former Soviets and have heard the warnings from them, as well as that woman that escaped from North Korea. They experienced it, but clods like Susan Sarandon haven’t.

At one time not so long ago, when not so many jobs were readily open to women and not so many women wished to work outside the home, education drew from among the best, most educated and brightest women in the employment pool.

No longer. Childhood education and the college degree that is required to teach have been cheapened to the extent that any warm body will do to fill the ranks of K-12 teachers.

“Revolutions involve violence.”

Rothstein is advocating the violent overthrow of the government, aka insurrection. Where’s the FBI?

The school board hasn’t commented. It is reasonable to ask the following.

As a board, do you condone this type of indoctrination?

Are you planning any disciplinary action against Ms. Rothstein?

To the school’s principal and assistant principal, were you aware of what the teacher was doing in her classroom? Does any school administrator visit the classroom unannounced to see what this revolutionary was “teaching? If not, why not?

Do you support teaching revolution in a middle school?

Have you taken or recommended any disciplinary action against Rothstein? If not, why not?

Milhouse in reply to William Downey. | March 14, 2023 at 4:11 pm

Rothstein is advocating the violent overthrow of the government, aka insurrection. Where’s the FBI?

Advocating the violent overthrow of the government is protected speech. Doing it is not. So long as she sticks to mere advocacy she’s entitled to do it — but on her own time, not in the classroom. In the classroom she has to teach what the school board tells her, so if it’s interested in stopping this it can. But since it’s Montgomery County, that’s not likely. If it’s OK with her advocating this stuff in the classroom, there’s not much anyone else can do about it.

Gosport in reply to Milhouse. | March 15, 2023 at 11:00 pm

      18 U.S. Code § 2385 – Advocating overthrow of Government

Whoever knowingly or willfully advocates, abets, advises, or teaches the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying the government of the United States or the government of any State, Territory, District or Possession thereof, or the government of any political subdivision therein, by force or violence, or by the assassination of any officer of any such government; or

Whoever, with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of any such government, prints, publishes, edits, issues, circulates, sells, distributes, or publicly displays any written or printed matter advocating, advising, or teaching the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force or violence, or attempts to do so; or

Whoever organizes or helps or attempts to organize any society, group, or assembly of persons who teach, advocate, or encourage the overthrow or destruction of any such government by force or violence; or becomes or is a member of, or affiliates with, any such society, group, or assembly of persons, knowing the purposes thereof—

Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

Promoting violence and harming the little ones in her charge.

Was reminded of this from Paul Harvey:

“The west was wild, until the good guys started shooting back!”

And this:

“Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea.” (Mark 9:42)

Time to excise the cancer rotting our schools and society…let’s start with this hateful woman.

No small irony that this child of privilege living and working in one of Maryland’s wealthiest counties wants to tear it all down. It’s 99% likely that this woman has received or is currently receiving mental health care and takes psych meds. No one who is mentally ill/emotionally unstable, even with no history of violence, should be leading a classroom. They are too vulnerable to bad influences which they then spread to innocent students. Teachers should have to meet the same mental criteria as intel agency employees.

She needs to learn what happens to her ilk if the revolution finally arrives, and it’s not pretty.

She needs to read and write ten page book reports on The Black Book of Communism, The Gulag Archipelago, and especially Remembering the Darkness, stories from women who survived the Gulag. And I’ll save her the trouble of arguing “but that isn’t real communism, because the right people weren’t in charge.” The right people don’t exist.

“If everyone had the same amount of money” is the kind of superficial childlike thinking that characterizes these socialist brats.

Even if the government somehow created such a situation, it would last for less than a minute as people commenced to buying and selling. As always some would buy and sell more wisely than others, and everybody has different values.

I envision the lithe lass stooped over in water up to her knees 12-hours daily planting the rice in the paddy then walking 2-miles to the thatch hut to spend a couple hours preparing the family’s vittles then an hour making clothing until sleep overcomes her because in 6-hours the dawn will awaken her when she performs hut and family chores until the rice paddy or other nutrient-creating activity beckons her.

I think she demonstrates the qualities required for Biden’s next “Misinformation Czar”.

Money won’t matter if everyone had the same amount. Oh abode , how dumb can she get?
This woman actually made it through college?
Her live affair with socialism and communism apparently did not include much due diligence.
hello Rebeca! communism is a failed system. Communism will always fail because it is inoperable in the real world. And by the way, not one socialist or communist regime ever contemplated complete distribution of wealth. party members always live high off the hog.
Communist regimes promise that all people will be economically equal, and they deliver… everyone becomes poor.
Woke up and grow up Rebeca.. stuck to trying to make kids nicer. leave politics and economics to the adults.

She doesn’t want to offer consciousness raising and whatever to people drawn to that. She wants to hijack someone else’s resources, deployed for readin, writin, and ‘rithmatic, to inflict her RightThink on unsuspecting victims.

She should maybe take contributions to open up an indoctrination center n get her message out. Get her own tent and pass a plate or something. Handle some snakes.

Sigh. Such is “activism.”

If you’re a Marxist in the 21st century, you are either 1) Evil, 2) Stupid or 3) Utterly Ignorant. If you’re over 22 and have a college education (or over 18 and did any real reading in history) you should not be allowed to claim 3. We know from repeated attempts that Marxism, socialism and communism ALL result is mass murder. I really think we need to assume anyone who advocates for these points as 1 or 2, and treat them accordingly.
