On Michigan State Campus, a stone called the Rock is frequently painted by students and used as a form of free expression. After an MSU shooter killed three people on Monday night and injured five others, the rock was painted with a green and white message, “Allow us to defend ourselves & carry on campus.”
The Rock was repainted for a third time (the first time, it said “How many more?)”:
The new message: “To those we lost / to those healing” followed by the first names of the students killed — Brian Fraser, a sophomore; Arielle Anderson, also a sophomore; and Alexandria Verner, a junior. The painting included three lit candles. And then, before noon, it was painted over a third time. This time by a local artist who was using an “Always a Spartan” stencil and reportedly told a journalist tweeting a photo of him that the university sent him to do it to cover up the gun-rights message. That message remained for Wednesday’s vigil.
