Vanderbilt Prof Calls College Math a ‘White, Cisheteropatriarchal Space’

“delivered a lecture in early January at a major mathematician meeting”

Studying math is racist and sexist now? How do these people say things like this with a straight face?

The College Fix reports:

College math a ‘white, cisheteropatriarchal space,’ Vanderbilt professor says at major conference

An education professor delivered a lecture in early January at a major mathematician meeting that described college math as “white” and “cisheteropatriarchal.”

“Undergraduate Mathematics Education as a White, Cisheteropatriarchal Space and Opportunities for Structural Disruption to Advance Queer of Color Justice” was the full title of the lecture given by Luis Leyva, associate professor of mathematics education at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University.

Leyva delivered the lecture Jan. 4 in Boston at the Joint Mathematics Meetings 2023. The summit is the “largest mathematics gathering in the world,” according to its website.

“Cisheteropatriarchal” is a term in ethnic studies referring to “a system of male, straight, conforming-to-assigned sex system power,” teacher and curriculum designer R. Tolteka Cuauhtin told the Los Angeles Times in a 2019 article.

Leyva’s “findings depict[ed] how Black, Latin*, and Asian QT [queer and transgender] students’ narratives of experience reflect forms of intersectionality, or instances of oppression and resistance,” according to his lecture’s abstract.

I see right through his ploy—trying to come up with new words that only children from India will be able to spell which will give them an unfair advantage at spelling bees.

I’d expect this nonsense from an education professor who likely flunked math.

Agree… he couldn’t do math so he talks about teaching it. In my experience the least rigorous advanced degrees were/are in education and for some reason many getting them are the ones constantly talking about and shoving their degrees in your face…”Dr” Jill Biden being a typical example. NO ONE outside of academic institution would EVER expect to be called Dr. with an EdD.

Most ed profs are big into statistics as it is all they have. They do math, just not the really complicated stuff.

That said, there’s not much “scholarship” to be advanced in the field unless you can come up with some kind of victimization propaganda train to jump on like this one.

Yes, yes, yes!! I went through a postbaccalaureate program in education to get certified to teach science in secondary school, and it was appalling how easy the courses were.

And education majors at my school all graduated summa cum laude. Go figure.

I was a parchocial school arithmetic wiz, and an altar boy. The priests never laid a hand on me, and I made later good use of my superior ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. None of it made me gay or kept me from being gay. Luis Leyva is an embarrassing idiot, and so are the people who enable and support him. So there.

White guys: logic
Everyone/thing else: feels

“Calls College Math a ‘White, Cisheteropatriarchal Space’”
But is that space a Hilbert Space, a Non-Euclidian Space, an N-manifold of Abelian Groups, or what?
Be SPECIFIC, man!
Unless it’s beyond you.

0+0=0 regardless of whatever you call yourself

Without implying any disrespect, this member of Vanderbilt’s faculty is a fool.

He may realize he is a fool, and a fraud.

He might not.

Regardless, I suspect that from a young age he has been encouraged to pursue an academic career.

Why?

Probably because he was just a bit brighter than his peers.

This (as documented in Mr. LaChance’s article) is the unfortunate result. Gibberish.

This guy could have been encouraged to do any number of more productive things with his life. For example, he might have learned to drive an 18-wheel truck and at this point he could be owning his own small business; or he could be a vice-president of a 500-vehicle company. Many other possibilities for a reasonably bright guy.

But no. It seems he and his family were encouraged to pursue academia. Surely by well-intentioned leftists.

Now he gives useless lectures in gibberish.

As one that has been in the belly of the beast, in both secondary, postsecondary and medical school, I can absolutely agree that the destruction is systemic (Finally! A real application of the word!).

Rubbish like this only demonstrates that there are too many “graduates” in the soft sciences/education and -studies departments, and they all have to find a way to stand out in the crowd.

What is the point of peer review when your peers are as screwed up as you are?

I have no idea what anything he said means. In my world 2 + 2 is still 4

20 years ago, I was an assistant professor at Vanderbilt. I only able to tolerate the progressive entitled atmosphere for 5 years before bolting into the non academic world.

It’s clear here how much worse it has devolved. College Simply notes it costs parents $76,044/yr to have their offspring indoctrinated at VU.

I hope they enjoy having the kid living with them for a few more decades. Think “Wayne’s World” rather than “Failure to Launch”.

“Cisheteropatriarchal”…hmm…that’s the longest spelling of “bullshit” I’ve ever seen.

we’re supposed to pretend that this computer-generated random jumbling of very limited vocabulary and concepts is wise or even makes sense.
