Does the Left Now Want to Chuck Fauci Across the Potomac?

In the wake of the glorious news that White House covid advisor and megalomaniacal godlet Dr. Anthony Fauci was retiring, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had a few choice thoughts on the subject.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described retiring Dr. Anthony Fauci as an “elf” and called for him to be chucked “across the Potomac” River in a stump speech Wednesday afternoon.Fauci, 81, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the top medical adviser to the last seven presidents, announced Monday that he would retire at the end of the year.DeSantis, speaking at a “Keep Florida Free” GOP rally in Seminole County, mocked Fauci’s height of 5’7″ — two inches shorter than his own — and called for him to be physically thrown from the US capital to Maryland, WFLA News reported.“I’m just sick of seeing him. I know he says he’s going to retire. Someone needs to grab that little elf and chuck him across the Potomac,” DeSantis told the cheering crowd after discussing Fauci’s “poor” treatment of children during the coronavirus pandemic.

Many independent conservatives have long distrusted the Fauci. But now the left appears to be more Fauci-questioning.

Slate recently published a piece entitled The Last “Trusted” Doctor and asserted Fauci’s credibility did not make it through the pandemic intact. Among the Fox-News-hating and conservative-bashing smear, there were some signs that the glow has come off the doctor.

Like most people in power during a fast-moving pandemic, Fauci has been wrong. Most infamously, he was wrong about masks and asymptomatic transmission early in the pandemic. He was also wrong about vaccines stopping transmission. He was dismissive about the possibility of the lab origins of the virus—which, though increasingly unlikely, could not at the time be completely ruled out—which later raised eyebrows and fed into conspiracy theories because the NIH had provided grant money that indirectly funded virus research in Wuhan.

So while the left may not be entirely on board with chucking Fauci across the Potomac, it is at least chucking-adjacent.

Personally, I cannot express how challenging it was for me to cover covid for Legal Insurrection. Posts I prepared, which now were clearly correct, would have been dismissed as “misinformation” had we promoted them on social media. Assertions I made, which turn out to be true, were challenged by media “watchdogs” based on the distortions and disinformation provided by Fauci.

So, it is with some amount of ire I report that as Fauci is leaving office, he is now saying exactly what I have said for the past 18 months: We need to learn to live with covid.

“I think that when you talk about new normal, you have to focus predominantly on COVID,” Fauci said. “We have the emergence of infectious diseases more often than people realize. Many of them are relatively insignificant at a global level.”Fauci has spent his career studying emerging viruses and guiding America’s response to health crises like the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and West Nile Virus.“Could we actually eradicate SARS COV-2, the cause of COVID? I can tell you categorically, the answer to that is going to be no,” says Fauci. “We’ve only eradicated from the face of the earth one significant pathogen and that’s smallpox.”

Based on Fauci’s criteria, I guess I can now declare. . . I am science.
