After the recent decision by FINA to restrict trans athletes from women’s sports, women’s soccer star Megan Rapinoe voiced support for trans athletes competing with women during an interview.
She essentially dismissed the concerns of parents, to no one’s surprise.

Soccer superstar and political activist Megan Rapinoe argued in an interview published Sunday that female athletes and their parents need to suck it up over advantages biologically male transgender athletes might have over girls.
The forward told Time magazine she is “100% supportive” of “trans inclusion” in girls sports, dismissing concerns about fairness while emphasizing that people “need to understand that sports is not the most important thing in life.”
Rapinoe also argued that high-level sports are all about “regulation,” which the athlete apparently believes can erase trans athletes’ advantages. A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine suggests that’s not true.

Rapinoe vastly overestimates her popularity and influence.
The sandwich chain Subway was using her in a line of TV spots last year that caused a flood of complaints from franchise owners who claimed that the national anthem-kneeling athlete was hurting their bottom line.

Rapinoe is a finesse player, lots of ball skills and outsmarting the opponents, unlike some of the women soccer players who play ugly and just outmuscle the opposing women. I didn’t like her kneeling but I did like watching her soccer.

People in this thread are equating lesbians (born female) with transgenders (born male) and using it to imply that Rapinoe stands to benefit from the inclusion of transgenders, maybe that she’s transgender herself. As for her look, her forehead slopes back and she has no adam’s apple, which are immutable female characteristics, she wears her hair short which may by typically lesbian but it’s very mutable. During college I had a summer job in Chicago and the cheap apartment I rented happened to be near where some crossdressers would appear at night. 1) In the mid/late 1970’s, the US womens volleyball team had an informal scrimmage match against ad hoc mens team from the DFW metroplex. A couple house rule modifications to make the game competitive, A) no men over 5’9″, B) no men hitting in front of the 10′ line.
2) there is a husband / wife cyclists in the DFW area, both of which are highly respected and well liked among the cycling community. The husband is ranked in the top 1,000-1,200 in the world while the wife is ranked in the top 10-15 women in world. Obviously , both very fast, though the husband is much faster.
The point of Grant’s and my comment is that there is a considerable physical advantage in sports for being male.

Did Rapinoe understand that her statement undermined women’s athletics? If HS level girls sports and the youth leagues which feed into HS girls sports aren’t important then why are we paying for them? Does she hold a similar viewpoint about women’s sports at the collegiate level? We already know she won’t allow the objective voice of the market determine a hierarchy of importance and worth.

We probably don’t pay that much for girls’ sports, anyway in HS if more boys than girls want to participate, we can have more positions and sports for boys, making the funding follow the student. But the colleges have to spend vast amounts they can’t afford for Title IX or they’re not even allowed to have varsity sports for boys, scholarship or not.
Granted Rapinoe benefited from this terrible system (good for her but why did we have to pay for her sports opportunities), but if she can push back against it, she can do some good.
I don’t blame her for using the opportunities she had from the current system while in school and college. Anyone would have. It’s up to adults, not students, to get rid of or fix programs that have become ridiculous like Title IX.

Ultimately, this is about who gets Title IX funding. Title IX basically put a bunch of money into girls’ sports scholarships, in order to keep the college football train going.
If guys can dip into that pool by claiming to be women, they can vacuum up a lot of that money, while also giving the school easy wins in competitions. It’s not like steroid abuse isn’t a thing in men’s sports either.
It also makes the collegiate sports naturally more equal numerically. Title IX imposes numerical equality, which almost always results in lots and lots of those girls’ scholarships, quite an incentive to play the sport in college even if you don’t care that much about it, while the boys can’t even get their sports.
So it could end up reducing “Title IX money” and make the overall thing cost less, which colleges desperately need these days. Title IX costs them a fortune they can’t afford.

There are size and weight ranges for at least wrestling and martial arts. There are age ranges for baseball, football and soccer. Those are just the ones I know for a fact.
Oh, and boxing.
This is the way to do it. Soccer is not particularly a contact sport like wrestling, so rather than segregating by sexual equipment or stated gender identification, have co-ed soccer by, say, weight class. That gets rid of the whole issue.
At the same weight, women have more body fat and less muscle. Back to the drawing board.

Re: the importance of Volleyball teams, hmm, I guess in the grand scheme of things, they are not really hugely important. But as the participant ages, they become less important. So for High School the team’s importance is not as important as, say the participants’ academic achievements for example. Whereas for the importance of Rapinoe’s team members, they are almost as important as the flea bite on my dog’s ass.
A single transgender athlete is not nearly as important as everyone else on the team.

The emphasis on women’s sports, which brought in Title IX, has brought us terrible things, far worse than the benefit from persuading and pleading with women to play varsity sports in college. Very few of the women’s soccer players do, it’s a significantly lesbian sport in the US anyway, from what I understand. So is women’s volleyball, and I know that because I used to date a (straight, obviously) women’s volleyball player.

The last sentence is definitely true, and while one may be surprised that Rapinoe is the one delivering the message, the message itself has merit. (1) it’s just sports and (2) it’s not even the best, but a particular class created to select some winners that would not have won. There can be a lot of skill in women’s soccer, which is basically lower powered soccer. It’s more interesting to me than women’s tennis, which is just more boring than men’s.

On a plus note, if you actually do want a subway sandwich, there is rarely a line. Even in Portland they are pretty empty these days, which is amazing in that many places are still closed or runnig limited hours. I don’t buy the part about her being greedy because of this. A female athlete’s loss would be a trans athlete’s gain, and why would she care more about one than the other? I’m not aware of a same-sex loyalty pledge, although I know the ultra-feminists continually try to impose one. In either case she played the cards she was given and clawed her way to the top of her women’s sport, taking the spot for herself and excluding many others, as all successful people do.

That seems natural, but it was never enforced as I can recall. No chromosome tests at the Olympics, instead ridiculously forcing athletes to reveal their privates, if that. I guess the genetics argument is a slippery slope, then maybe you could have race specific teams. But this super-simple solution seems to be Kryptonite.
