George Washington University Rejects Student Demands to Remove Clarence Thomas From Faculty

“GWU officials said that they will not remove Thomas from his current position with the school because he has not violated the school’s policy on academic freedom”

Students at the school actually petitioned for this, because they’re obviously so much smarter and more virtuous than Justice Thomas.

George Washington University rejects calls to remove Clarence Thomas from teaching role

George Washington University (GWU) has rejected its student body’s calls to remove Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas from his adjunct professor role in the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v. Wade.

In a letter sent on Tuesday, GWU officials said that they will not remove Thomas from his current position with the school because he has not violated the school’s policy on academic freedom, saying that Thomas is free to express his own opinion even though his views do not reflect the school.

“Because we steadfastly support the robust exchange of ideas and deliberation, and because debate is an essential part of our university’s academic and educational mission to train future leaders who are prepared to address the world’s most urgent problems, the university will neither terminate Justices Thomas’ employment nor cancel his class in response to his legal opinions,” GWU said in its letter to students.

“Just as we affirm our commitment to academic freedom, we affirm the right of all members of our community to voice their opinions and contribute to the critical discussion that are foundational to our academic mission.”

And, if I were Dean, they’d get tossed out so fast their head would swim. If I felt charitable, I’d give them one free copy of their transcripts.

In the 1970s, the University of Chicago adopted and issued the Kalven Report. Basically it said that aside from cases where the university is a customer/consumer, the university should not take a position on issues of the day. This is because each university is a community of scholars and it is the job of the university to foster debate between the scholars rather than force an orthodoxy upon them. So, U of C does not take positions on abortion or the Viet Nam war. I think this is the best approach. The article above said Justice “Thomas is free to express his own opinion even though his views do not reflect the school.” There is nobody who is qualified to reflect GW’s views on abortion, and GW should not have an official view on abortion. Rather GW should encourage conversation and debate between those holding differing views on the topic. Justice Thomas has probably spent more time than the GW President reading and thinking about abortion. The GW President does not have the right to tell Justice Thomas or anyone else what they should believe.

Tell the little stasi wannabes that if they disrupt his classes in any way -like the shameful performance of the Yale Law brown shirts—they will be expelled. Let em chew on that

Their new strategy may be to go after anyone who dares to enroll in his class. Harassment should be sufficient for expulsion, but I doubt GW has the courage.
