Wyoming Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis spoke at the University of Wyoming’s commencement ceremony this week.
When she mentioned that there are two sexes, students in the audience began to audibly boo and heckle her.
Unfortunately, Lummis apologized for this.
Mead Gruver of the Associated Press reported:
Wyoming senator booed for sex identity remarks at graduationU.S. Sen. Cynthia Lummis apologized Monday after getting booed and heckled for remarks she made on sexual identity during a University of Wyoming graduation speech.A first-term Republican from deep-red Wyoming, Lummis said in Saturday’s speech in Laramie that human rights are derived from God but that government seeks to redefine many of them.“Even fundamental, scientific truths such as the existence of two sexes, male and female, are subject to challenge these days,” Lummis said. She paused and smiled while many in the crowd responded with boos and heckling.“And I challenge those of you,” she continued. But she didn’t complete that thought, saying: “I’m not making a comment on the fact that there are people who transition between sexes.”

The Oil City News has the details on the apology:
A spokesperson for Lummis responded to a request for comment Sunday, with the senator saying through a statement that she was apologizing to those who felt “un-welcomed or disrespected” by the comments.“My reference to the existence of two sexes was intended to highlight the times in which we find ourselves, times in which the metric of biological sex is under debate with potential implications for the shared Wyoming value of equality,” the statement read.“I share the fundamental belief that women and men are equal, but also acknowledge that there are biological differences and circumstances in which these differences need to be recognized. That being said, it was never my intention to make anyone feel un-welcomed or disrespected, and for that I apologize. I have appreciated hearing from members of the University of Wyoming community on this issue, and I look forward to continuing this dialogue.”
Cynthia Lummis has a Bachelor of Science in biology. How’s that for irony?
