Rashida Tlaib Doubled Down on Far Left Priorities in SOTU Response Speech

Rashida Tlaib Doubled Down on Far Left Priorities in SOTU Response Speech

“We need to tax billionaires and megacorporations that dodge their fair share. And we need to fight back against unchecked corporate power that increasingly shape our lives.”

Squad member and Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib felt the need to offer her own response to Biden’s SOTU speech this week.

Many people thought it was an odd move, considering that she was responding to a speech by a member of her own party, but she clearly knew Biden wasn’t going to go far left enough for her and others.

Tlaib made her speech on behalf of the far left Working Families party. I watched the entire speech, and it’s pretty much what you would expect. Tlaib doubled down on defunding the police, free health care, and forgiving all student loan debt.

The thing I found most surprising was Tlaib’s multiple references to the working class, which she obviously thinks is still a strong part of the Democrat coalition. I’m pretty sure that ship has left port.

Here’s a partial transcript, from Twitchy:

I have been taking care of people all my life. My service in Congress is guided by my roots. That’s why I’m committed to standing up for our communities that just want the opportunity to thrive in the richest country in the world. It shouldn’t be this hard for so many to have a good life. Tonight, I am proud to deliver a response on behalf of the Working Families Party.

The Working Families Party is a voice for the multiracial working class, fighting for a nation that cares for all of us. I’m a lifelong Democrat. I’m also part of the Working Families Party because I believe that our government must put the needs of working families first in difficult times. We must never lose sight of each other’s humanity. Two years ago, we couldn’t have imagined a pandemic that has taken nearly a million lives here at home, in nearly 6 million across the world.

It also threw tens of millions of Americans, our neighbors, out of work. And it exposed our inhumane, profit driven healthcare system as our essential workers were pushed to the breaking point and hospitals ran out of beds. When President Biden took office just over a year ago, he took action. He started getting shots and arms. He acted quickly to deliver emergency relief.

Congress approved direct relief checks. We helped our working parents. We stopped evictions. We sent resources to our schools and our local and state governments. We show the potential of an administration and Congress that can act together at the scale of the challenges we all face.

We showed how our government can be in the service of the working class majority, not just the wealthy few. And it worked. President Biden and Congress stopped what could have been an economic resolve. Not a single Republican, not one voted for the relief package. We created 6 million new jobs.

She blamed Republicans, Manchin, and Sinema for standing in the way of Biden’s plans:

But two forces stood in the way. A Republican Party that serves only the rich and the powerful, and just enough corporatebacked Democratic obstructionists to help them succeed. Some important parts of the President’s agenda became law with the infrastructure bill, but we campaigned on doing even more. Roads and bridges are critical, but so are child care and prescription drugs. And we shouldn’t have to choose people like India Beckham, a mother of seven children in my district who is the sole provider for her family.

Tlaib touched on crime, which is ironic given her support of groups like BLM and Antifa:

Nothing is more important than keeping the people we love free from harm. We all deserve to be safe in our neighborhoods. The path to community safety is investing in what people need to thrive, like access to jobs, quality education and real opportunities. We can’t police away homelessness, poverty or mental health crisis in our country. Care, care, not more criminalization is how we ensure lasting safety for all.

And of course, this was right out of the Bernie Sanders playbook:

Over the last two years, the richest people in America doubled their wealth as profits skyrocket. Corporations have the nerve to blame inflation while increasing prices on essential goods and services. This is more than simply corporate greed.

It’s extortion. We need to tax billionaires and megacorporations that dodge their fair share. And we need to fight back against unchecked corporate power that increasingly shape our lives.

You can watch the whole thing below:

Writing at the Daily Beast, Elanor Clift called Tlaib’s speech a gift to Republicans:

Rashida Tlaib’s State of the Union Response to Biden Is a Gift to the GOP

On the night of President Joe Biden’s first State of the Union address, in which the president called for unity against both foreign and domestic threats, why would a fellow Democrat feel compelled to deliver a progressive response?

Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib spoke on behalf of not the Democratic Party but the Working Families Party, in her post-SOTU comments. She was careful not to call it a rebuttal, but whatever you call it it’s a slap at her party’s leader at a time when he is facing multiple crises and the Democrats have the slimmest of margins in the House and Senate…

At a time when polls show voters think Biden is already too far left, Tlaib’s grabbing a State of the Union platform struck others in the party as self-destructive in the extreme. “Why does any Democrat at this moment think it’s a good idea to attack other Democrats on the night of the President’s State of the Union, it’s insane,” says Matt Bennett, a co-founder of Third Way, a moderate Democratic group.

A reckoning is coming for the Democratic party. People on the left are going to have to choose a side in this battle between the center left and the radical left.

Why does someone that hates America to the extent she does stay her? She doesn’t leave and demands we let in more.

It’s time for the Democratic Socialists to break away from the Democrat party. Like Bernie Sanders, they only really call themselves Democrats when they’re running for office.

    Milhouse in reply to OldProf2. | March 3, 2022 at 4:19 pm

The Democrat Party serves them just fine, so why should they leave it?

The Gentle Grizzly in reply to OldProf2. | March 3, 2022 at 5:03 pm

Something like Romney, Collins, and Murkowski calling themselves Republicans.

    Never gonna happen.

The “leadership class” of the DS fringe are fully aware that no American short of the “useless idiot class” will ever support them and they simply don’t have the numbers or clout to further their agenda with them alone.

If they were to “branch off”, they would wither and die in very short order.

Its a parallel with the globalists who run as Conservatives.

SOTU address is supposed to be about the country’s condition. The president is supposed to tell us that everything is fine (as Biden did in the last two minutes of his Tuesday evening SOTU address), and then the opposition is supposed to tell the truth.

Instead, everyone just uses the opportunity as a campaign speech “Support me because of everything I will do for you, and for the money I will take from some and give to others.” The parties’ national committees should pay for the air time.

Nothing is more important than keeping the people we love free from harm. We all deserve to be safe in our neighborhoods. The path to community safety is investing in what people need to thrive, like access to jobs, quality education and real opportunities.

How would those things make anyone safer? All they would do is increase the prey and make them fatter so the predators can eat better.

Besides eliminating Israel and facing toward Mecca 5 times a day, her other positions include—not defunding police—but totally eliminating them as well as closing jails and prisons. I guess there would be no need for DA’s either.

“No more policing, incarceration, and militarization. They can’t be reformed.”

Her positions are so popular that she has been elected twice.

Again, the democrats are trying to pit rich against poor. Everyone by now probably knows that there is NO WAY to tax the corporations more. The tax on any business is an expense. That expense, like all other expenses, are passed on to the consumer of their goods or services. If you raise their taxes, prices will go up to cover the additional expense. Is that so hard to comprehend?????

Strange how the lunatic left never define “their fair share.”

Peabody in reply to Juris Doctor. | March 3, 2022 at 5:40 pm

If no one received more than their “fair share” we wouldn’t be talking about the need for others to give more.

Juris Doctor in reply to Peabody. | March 3, 2022 at 5:46 pm

How did you go about determining what their fair share was since you asserted that some received more than theirs?

henrybowman in reply to Juris Doctor. | March 3, 2022 at 6:51 pm

Can’t be done, until you tell them how much you got left.

Assuming you were not just rhetorically speaking, there actually is an answer and Marx went into it and its right there when one studies it academically.

His “utopian” concept is solely based on people “doing the right thing” of their own accord. (otherwise it falls apart)

Nothing in Marxism can be “defined” with a hard value because Marxism is by design a moving scale as the people expand in order to build and maintain a definitive line between the peasantry and the leadership class ( with no bridge)

Your “fair share” in production and consumption is directly tied to “each according to his ability” and “each according to his need”.

Since there is no standard governing and measuring “ability” against “need” and no common denominator ( by design because you cannot have people “doing enough” in Marxism because that means there is now a scale to identify those who are not “doing their fair share”)

In that light, your “fair” grows as you do thus you can never accomplish it except by what the ruling class says.

Same concept with “equity” versus “equality”.

Equality can be defined and measured- equity is deliberately subjective for that reason.

You really have no idea what you are talking about do you, the idea behind the quote “each according to his ability …” Is the idea that a Marxist society would produce an abundance of good thus providing all the needs of everyone. In other words it was the idea that th means of production under working class control would be more productive than under capitalist control. The rights and wrongs of that can be debated. The reason I highlight it is because it really shows how little you know about Marxism.

henrybowman in reply to Fatkins. | March 7, 2022 at 6:56 pm

So we are only allowed to discuss Marxism with respect to the unachievable fantasies it promises, rather than the hard realities that destroy every society that adopts it.
Well, that explains even more about you.

Working Families Party, sounds like a Marxist party and she is the perfect figure spokeswoman for it.

No matter what label she uses, she represents Muslims and Muslim interests that have priority over the interests of the American people.

Milhouse in reply to Peabody. | March 3, 2022 at 7:10 pm

      Her constituents are American people.

Peabody in reply to Milhouse. | March 3, 2022 at 9:06 pm

        Sweet Sister Josephine!

randian in reply to Milhouse. | March 3, 2022 at 11:40 pm

        Her constituents are American people

No devout Muslim is American, in the sense that Islam commands they tear down anywhere that Islam does not rule. Progressives are not American, in the same sense. That is why progressives and Muslims are allies. The problem the progressives have is Muslims won’t hesitate to have them executed if they attain power.

Milhouse in reply to randian. | March 4, 2022 at 12:11 am

They are American because the constitution says so. This country belongs to them every bit as much as it belongs to the rest of us. That their beliefs are very different from ours is irrelevant. We must fight those beliefs, but ultimately if they gain the numbers to implement them then that’s democracy.

Danny in reply to randian. | March 4, 2022 at 12:19 am

Are they the only proselytizing religion in this country?

Progressives won over Muslims as a result of Bush’ war on terror, prior to Bush they voted Republican at rates of up to 90%.

Milhouse in reply to randian. | March 4, 2022 at 10:50 am

Progressives won over Muslims as a result of Bush’ war on terror,

Because they were pro-terrorist. They did so despite Bush’s strenuous efforts to keep them, by pretending Islam is a “religion of peace” and insisting that the FBI treat them with kid gloves. By going over to the left they showed that he was wrong.

taurus the judge in reply to Milhouse. | March 4, 2022 at 10:07 am

You really have no working knowledge, awareness or even a clue about Islam, the refugees here or the Constitution and law in general do you?

It shows in this commentary string.

All you’re doing is showing your own ignorance on all those topics. I have no illusions about Islam, but it is what it is. The constitution protects it the same as any other religion. And Tlaib is not a refugee, and not the child of refugees; she is American just like any of us, and so are her constituents. The country belongs to them just as it does to us. That is what the constitution says, and if you don’t like it then you should go find somewhere else to live.

I’m curious as to what you think Milhouse got wrong and why?

And we need to fight back against unchecked corporate power that increasingly shape our lives

It’s unchecked corporate power that keeps her in power.

Will somebody tell this woman that envy and jealousy are for losers?

Like her.
.

You did not create 6-million jobs. You and your ilk, backed by your health department Gestapo, threw 60-million people out of work. Then you made them beg and plead to be allowed to come back to work. You loved having them on their knees – the same way that every other Socialist / Communist Commissariat has done across history, while slaughtering the proles, peons, and peasants by the millions.

Tlaib is a straight-up anti-Semite. Her continued presence in Congress speaks volumes about the district she represents.

she is marked meat no matter who wins the next election…..this show is only beginning….the left has no idea what is about to happen to them……none….and when it happen the media will yell bloody murder, exactly the crime they are guilty of committing.
