The Washington Post reported the White House will withdraw its nomination of David Chipman to head the ATF.
A senior administration official told CNN that Chipman does “not have the votes.” The official admitted they “will land him in a non-confirmed job in the administration.”
Chipman used to work for the ATF. He then joined a gun-control group.
Chipman faced bipartisan pushback due to his extreme gun control views. He told Congress he wants to ban AR-15s:
“With respect to the AR-15, I support a ban as has been presented in a senate bill and supported by the president,” Chipman told Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas. Cruz said the AR-15 was “one of, if not the, most popular rifle in America.“The AR-15 is a gun I was issued on the ATF’s SWAT team, and it’s a particularly lethal weapon. Regulating it as other particularly lethal weapons, I have advocated for. As ATF director, if I’m confirmed, I would simply enforce the laws on the books, and right now there is no such ban on those guns.”
Chipman also defended and justified the Waco raid in the 1990s. He also lied about Koresh followers shooting at helicopters.
Seven former ATF agents told the Senate Judiciary Committee they should not confirm Chipman because his “personal beliefs on firearms issues will create serious and long-lasting problems for the Bureau and the effective execution of its law enforcement mission.”
