Nikole Hannah-Jones Spits in UNC’s Face, Turns Down Tenure for Howard U. Position
Hannah-Jones made such a big deal about not receiving tenure, making the school jump through hoops for her. Capitulation and bending the knee never works
The drama between 1619 Project author Nikole Hannah-Jones and University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill finally ended on Tuesday morning.
Hannah-Jones wanted tenure for her position as Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism, but professors and outside groups demanded it not happen.
UNC tried to stand its ground but eventually caved. Done and over, right?
Nope! Hannah-Jones revealed this morning she declined the tenure offer and will become the inaugural Knight Chair in Race and Reporting at Howard University.

“I am so incredibly honored to be joining one of the most important and storied educational institutions in our country … ” Hannah-Jones said in a statement. “One of my few regrets is that I did not attend Howard as an undergraduate, and so coming here to teach fulfills a dream I have long carried.”
Hannah-Jones will also found a Center for Journalism and Democracy at Howard. She said it will aim to train journalism students from historically Black schools to “accurately and urgently [cover] the challenges of our democracy with a clarity, skepticism, rigor and historical dexterity that is too often missing from today’s journalism.

They absolutely dodged a bullet. The absolutely massive ego Hannah-Jones displays on a regular basis is quite sickening. She attempted to pretend this was a free speech issue and that she, a woman with one of the most influential platforms on earth, was being silenced because she may have had to wait and produce more work to earn A position that is tenured. Sadly when we told our kids that pretending to be a victim wouldn’t wash in the adult world we were dead wrong.
The problem is that they dodged a bullet that they deserved.
I know what the terms “clarity,”” skepticism,” and “rigor” usually mean. I have no idea what the term “historical dexterity” means.
“Historical dexterity” means the ability to change the past to meet the needs of the present.
“needs of the present” is an oxymoron. They want to change the present to be like the past (don’t ask me to define because it’s fluid, like gender fluid). So the result is you don’t go anywhere.
That was what the movie “Deadpool II” was about. It was awesome!

No, they probably made it clear they expected actual scholarship and hard work from her and she saw she would be over her head there. By contrast, Howard U. could give her a “position” that would amount to a racist free ride. This reflects negatively on the University.

She reminds me of someone I knew in the navy. Constantly DEMANDING this pr that, including special fast-tracking, then saying no and making further demands. Very much a racist, talking about the “white man’s navy” blah blah.
End result: he made noises about leaving but as re-enlistment time approached he had second thoughts. The only problem: no one would conduct his reenlistment ceremony. He had to go to another base to get it done. Our career counselor then got him a really horrible duty station.

Good for her. The offer of tenure was a backhanded slap with Howard U taking a knee. She should return to school, learn, and teach people that Critical Racists’ Theory presumes diversity [dogma] (i.e. color judgment) breeds adversity in order help people overcome their insidious bigotry. Howard and Hannah-Jones deserve each other
Many times it is just part of the academic recruitment game. Play off your present employer against another in order to get concessions or a raise.
In the sciences, there are huge costs involved with new faculty, so a current member can play the say $100K setup charges for a newly recruited person vs against the chair/dean giving them $50K to just stay put. But sometimes it backfires.
I bet that Bozo was in negotiations with Howard and decided to make a play at UNC to up her value, but having no or little intention of going to UNC. With UNC caving and giving her tenure, perhaps she then bargained for better conditions at Howard. Now of course, UNC could just say stuff it, and then she is in a worse position with Howard, who then might decide to offer her less than they originally did. Although, in her case the fair amount would be for her to pay them to allow her to teach.
UNC got lucky. I’ll still root against UNC because it’s fun to do. I don’t know about Howard. It wasn’t a college that my son wanted to attend. We’re white so we don’t match up very well with what Howard is all about.
Howard is an HBCU school.
In spite of the dumbasses on the faculty of and in the administration of UNC, I will be rooting against whoever you’re rooting for.

UNC dodged the NCAA Death Penalty for their ACADEMIC CHEATING on a “technicality”! In addition to many basketball players taking the bogus classes and getting false grades, the courses were also open to “regular” students! So UNC wasn’t showing any “favoritism” for the athletes because they ALLOWED EVERYONE TO CHEAT! Now they’ve dodged their SECOND bullet! Will the NEXT one be the one that causes them much grief and suffering???
Bullshit. UNC dodged nothing. It is a lie to suggest they got off on a technicality, so either you are a liar or you are too stupid to look up the facts. They were subjected to an NCAA witchunt for several years for a violation that never occurred. And that is why in the end the NCAA dropped their “investigation” without so much as a reprimand. The NCAA does not set academic standards. Every school with a “studies” program, every single one, has the same academic standards in those programs.
Maybe, but we all know the class that comprises the whole football team is an easy “A” class.

In retrospect, was UNC a good fit with Ms. Jones? Does she have what it takes to be an excellent professor? Many faculty work one day a week on gigs outside the University. Will she have more opportunities in Washington DC at Howard? The hiring committee has a lot of explaining to do.
The fact that Nicole Hanna Jones is their ideal should still be something the North Carolina State Legislature takes into account next time it comes up with a budget.
