The Chinese military is looking to acquire more advanced nuclear weapons systems, a senior U.S. diplomat warns.
Beijing is interested in Russian-made “exotic nukes” like underwater drones and missiles that run on nuclear power, Ambassador Robert Wood, U.S. envoy to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, said.
This will be a game-changer for China, which seeks global dominance, since the U.S. and the West do not posses any of these nuclear technologies.
Chinese nuclear planners have the U.S. in its cross-hairs, the only Western power capable of countering the Communist regime militarily. “China is looking to raise the stakes by upgrading its nuclear arsenal with the latest technology so their weapons could hit US targets,” the German public broadcaster DW News reported Friday.

A U.S. diplomat focusing on disarmament said Thursday that China is “looking at” developing naval and aerial autonomous nuclear weapons systems, warning any such development could disrupt strategic stability.Ambassador Robert Wood, the U.S. envoy to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, said China hasn’t developed or been able to weaponize the technology yet. But his comments suggested that China is interested in such so-called “exotic nukes” like nuclear-powered underwater drones and nuclear-powered cruise missiles being developed by Russia.“This is something they are looking at,” Wood said. “If they were to develop … these kinds of weapons and aerial systems, this has the potential to change the strategic stability environment in a dynamic way.”The United States doesn’t have either type of system.“This is not where China was 10 years ago,” Wood added, noting the “upward trajectory” that China has been on in the quantity and quality of its weapons systems. “They’re pursuing weapons similar to some of the nuclear-powered delivery systems that the Russians have been pursuing.”
The U.S. revelation comes as the China’s People Liberation Army, the world’s largest armed force, is engaged in a massive expansion of its offensive military capabilities. According to London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), between 2014-18, China “launched more submarines, warships, principal amphibious vessels and auxiliaries than the total number of ships currently serving in the navies of Germany, India, Spain, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.” The Pentagon calls it the “the most comprehensive restructure in its history.”
In recent months, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has come out even more openly about its plans for global economic and military domination. In February, the CCP’s hand-picked parliament approved a road map to overtake U.S. as the world’s leading economy in 15 years. The Communist grand plan includes sweeping modernization of its armed forces and navy by 2027, to coincide PLA’s 100-year anniversary.
Under Chinese President Xi Jinping’s watch, the Maoist-Communist regime now has the world’s largest navy in terms of ship numbers. Beijing “has the largest navy in the world, with an overall battle force of approximately 350 ships and submarines including over 130 major surface combatants,” the U.S. Defense Department’s 2020 military assessment said.
