NY Times Defends Editorial Board Member ‘Disturbed’ by American Flags on Long Island

“New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay’s comments on MSNBC have been irresponsibly taken out of context.”

Mara Gay of the New York Times talked about how “disturbed” she was recently to see so many Trump flags and American flags on trucks on Long Island on MSNBC.

She wanted to make the point that the Trump “threat” still exists. She seemed genuinely shocked that there are still Americans who support Trump.

Gay’s view is a fascinating view into the mind of the progressive media elite.

Brandon Gillespie reports at FOX News:

NYT, MSNBC’s Mara Gay: ‘Disturbing’ to see ‘dozens of American flags’ on trucks in Long Island

MSNBC contributor Mara Gay said Tuesday that she was “disturbed” to see “dozens of American flags” flown by Donald Trump supporters during a weekend trip to Long Island, New York.

The left-wing editorial board member for The New York Times was also distressed by what she called expletives on the trucks against President Biden, describing the flag-flying Trump supporters as sending a clear message: “This is my country … not your country. I own this.”…

“I think that as long as they see Americanness as the same as one with Whiteness, this is going to continue,” Gay said, turning to race and adding that “Americanness” and “Whiteness” needed to be separated.

“I was on Long Island this weekend visiting a really dear friend, and I was really disturbed. I saw, you know, dozens and dozens of pickup trucks with explicatives [sic] against Joe Biden on the back of them, Trump flags, and in some cases just dozens of American flags, which is also just disturbing … Essentially the message was clear. This is my country. This is not your country. I own this,” Gay said.

When did Long Island become a conservative hotbed? Isn’t it safe to assume that some of those people on Long Island who fly American flags are Democrats?

Watch the clip below:

The New York Times ran to Mara’s defense over this, claiming that people took her comments out of context.

By the way, does the name Mara Gay sound familiar? It should if you follow politics.

Seriously. Gay said that. The Wrap reported in March of 2020:

Brian Williams, NY Times’ Mara Gay Dragged for Bad On-Air Math About Bloomberg Campaign Spending

New York Times editorial board member Mara Gay and MSNBC anchor Brian Williams were mocked Friday for a not-so-great demonstration of their math skills on the air Thursday night when neither realized that $500 million divided among 327 million people would not give each person $1 million.

Of course, they got ridiculed online, but not just by amused viewers. Some media and television veterans, like former Fox Newser and current Sinclair host Eric Bolling, pointed out that MSNBC’s producers were also at fault for creating a whole full-screen graphic of an unverified assessment from a third party and letting Williams and Gay discuss it without ever checking the math.

Watch:

Mara Gay is part of the media smart-set. These people play a significant role in framing policy on ‘free’ healthcare and ‘free’ college.

All I want to know is, where do I go for my ‘free’ million bucks?

If this is all too terrifying for this poor child, then why doesn’t she move to a different country, a bastion of fairness and democracy such as Pakistan, Ghana, Egypt, Turkey, Belarus, Iran. etc. According to her, anywhere is better than the US so what’s stopping her from leaving.? She could even get a million dollars in spending money from Brian Williams before she goes.

    Mara can do better.

Judiciously employing Mara’s Socialist Math, there’s no reason she couldn’t end global poverty, with money left over to feed the pigeons and escaped bats.

    $500,000,000 /7 billion folks = $1,000,000/ folk + bird feed remainder, = , who knows, the original $500,000,000?

Brian and Mara work miracles better than Jesus?

SeiteiSouther in reply to Cleetus. | June 10, 2021 at 4:44 pm

She’s getting trolled with pictures of American flags on Twitter. So much so, that she’s trying to walk it off with “This is not the own you think it is.”

My response? “Then why were you so upset to begin with?”

Nope, she is disturbed on a whole different level.

This is your brain. She is your brain on “Liberalism”.

Years ago there was s study conducted that proved flags tend to bolster the right. This is just more o the left controlling the narrative.

Ben Kent in reply to 2smartforlibs. | June 9, 2021 at 9:01 am

So, the Progressive-Marxists are disturbed by patriotic Americans who fly the flag.

I say let’s all fly the flag. Let’s get 10,000 people with flags to demonstrate at the NY Times.

Monday morning demonstration at 41st Street and 8th Ave in NYC (HQ of NY Times.
    > Reply if you’re coming WITH your Stars & Stripes.

Oh, boy – she had better never cruise through my neighborhood in semi-urban Texas. American (and Texas and military service) flags all over the place. On flagpoles in the yard, over the garage, and for Memorial Day and the 4th of July, rows of small flags stuck into the edges of lawns and flowerbeds.
Poor child’s head would explode.

I’m not a flag fan but just ignore them. They’re good for marking post offices and US embassies abroad. Otherwise they seem to be cheap grace to me.

The military has a good use for them as ritual around insignificance, to establish discipline and team-first effort. Civilian life not so much. The opposite if anything.

Every corrupt and worthless politician has a half dozen flags in the background. They’re running the cheap grace racket.

Jmaquis in reply to rhhardin. | June 9, 2021 at 8:45 am

My friend, the American flag colors represent purity (white) blood, war, and courage (red) and justice and freedom (blue) and there is a reason we stand and hold a hand over our hearts to pledge to the flag. It is representative of the sacrifices made by so many countrymen from the very beginnings of our Country. Reverence to our flag is a symbol of our appreciation and respect.

Are you very young and not had the meaning of the flag taught to you? The philosophical representation can’t be overstated.

rhhardin in reply to Jmaquis. | June 9, 2021 at 8:54 am

The reason you hold your hand over your heart is to make you shut and pay attention, some other event is about to begin and it’s time to stop milling around. Like school, or a baseball game.

It represents not purity etc but you being pure etc. Cheap grace. It displaces actual patriotism, which might be more difficult or inconvenient than pretending to care about the flag.

Colonel Travis in reply to rhhardin. | June 9, 2021 at 9:48 am

1.) Your cheap grace drapes the coffins of those who protect it. Is that price not high enough?

2.) What the hell is “actual patriotism”? If I followed your course, I couldn’t hang my flag. You claim to abhor mindless allegiance, but me following you, for example, is exactly what it would be.

I accidentally rated you a thumbs up, you do not deserve it.

rhhardin in reply to Colonel Travis. | June 9, 2021 at 11:58 am

Flags in the military serve a different purpose. Their being in fact valueless is used to foreground something intangible, duty. Still the flag isn’t the important thing. It’s just being used for that purpose.

You don’t want that mindset in civilians. You want cynics when some politician comes out with the groupthink of the day.

Dathurtz in reply to Colonel Travis. | June 9, 2021 at 5:55 pm

When is the last war Americans fought to defend our country?

The flag seems to be used as a prop to hide the fact that some of our best young people died for nothing other than an economic benefit to our elite.

I love the message of duty and honor and defending the homeland. In my lifetime the flag is used as a lie to give false meaning to soldier’s deaths and used as a shroud to hide the evil of our politicians.

Milhouse in reply to Colonel Travis. | June 9, 2021 at 8:25 pm

When is the last war Americans fought to defend our country?

Um, the one we’re currently in, against the Islamic terrorist network that includes (but is not limited to) al Qaeda.

henrybowman in reply to Colonel Travis. | June 9, 2021 at 10:59 pm

Downvote me away, but I’m with the cynics here. The flag has intrinsic meaning, but is routinely coopted by evil people every bit as often as good. The flag has become just another virtue signal, possibly the country’s oldest. Any fraudster or tyrant can wear a flag lapel pin on TV just as easily as an honest statesmen, and nearly all of them do. It’s not like flags and flag paraphernalia are like steel to fairies, or holy water to vampires — they don’t burn the unworthy who try to use them. When I see a flag flying, I no longer think, “this person is a patriot,” I think the only rationally-defensible conclusion: “this person wants me to think he is a patriot.” It no longer factors into my character assessment in either direction.

Dathurtz in reply to Colonel Travis. | June 10, 2021 at 6:31 am

Milhouse, tell that to my buddy who got killed guarding poppy fields for an Afghani warlord while in a U.S. army uniform.

Jester Naybor in reply to rhhardin. | June 9, 2021 at 12:29 pm

Cynicism that is not grounded in sound principle can lead to ignoring reality, just as lock-step submission to The Powers That Be can do.

jmaquis illustrates how that the flag can be a Post-It™ note to remind us of those principles that this nation was founded to respect and protect.

Now you may not need that reminder – and blind flag-worship as a substitute for understanding of those principles can be as unhealthy as cynicism or submission.

But some among us find that reminder of what we should be standing for beneficial. And our politicians and bureaucrats could use such reminders as well.

Perhaps grace will be less cheap, if we took the time to remember what that Post-It™ note is saying more often, and better live up to that message ourselves … then demand that our alleged leaders read that note closely, stop treating us as IIDA’s (infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals) and live up to those principles as well.

    Baby, bathwater, some assembly etc.

A lot of phony preachers display crosses, but that isn’t the symbols’ fault.

rhhardin in reply to Dusty Pitts. | June 9, 2021 at 9:04 am

It’s not the cross that gets you into Heaven, it’s how you live. Cheap grace again. The symbol is a distraction.

        rhhardin,

Uhmm I am a deist but was raised an Independent Methodist. From what I recall of Sunday School your theology seems unsound.

Acceptance of Christ is the only way into heaven for Christians. Good works and being an honorable and decent person are nice but not enough to get in.

The whole good works idea and being weighed is an idea from Egyptian mythology which was taken from older myths. At least as far as I recall.

CommoChief in reply to rhhardin. | June 9, 2021 at 12:39 pm

        rhhardin,

I’m sure you have good intentions but that path doesn’t lead where you think it does.

rhhardin in reply to CommoChief. | June 9, 2021 at 1:11 pm

Wittgenstein wondered about the matter of interpretation of the Gospels and asked if you wanted to warn somebody of a terrible danger, would you tell him a riddle whose answer was the warning?

Perhaps the same story is told many times differently just so that the exact story isn’t taken as the important thing.

CommoChief in reply to CommoChief. | June 9, 2021 at 5:14 pm

          rhhardin,

In general I agree with the later writings of Wittgenstein in which he emphasized the importance of deeds v words.

Dathurtz in reply to rhhardin. | June 9, 2021 at 6:00 pm

Well, you are free to believe as you will. You should be aware that your view is viewed as rather heterodox by virtually all of Christiandom.

rhhardin in reply to Dathurtz. | June 9, 2021 at 6:13 pm

If the point of the story is actually that everybody is the Messiah (the Messiah is the just man who suffers, who has taken on the suffering of others. Who finally takes on the suffering of others but the being who says “Me”?), then good works are the point.

Phenomenologically, you’re not unique until you’re called on to help by another. Then you become irreplaceable.

Quick application: if blacks want dignity as a race, take up a collection for poor whites. What works for an individual works for a race too. Whites haven’t been withholding dignity from blacks. Blacks have been withholding it from themselves.

Then blacks have a soul. That could be glossed as being in heaven.

Rowana in reply to rhhardin. | June 10, 2021 at 9:53 am

I’ll bet you have nobody in your heritage who fought for this country or served in a war. Once you have bloodline that has put their life (lives) on the flag line…you know what all it really represents. Your whimsical attitude towards the flag…I heard all that years ago…from “peaceniks who of course used that line to get out of the draft. If the flan is not important enough to fight for, it means nothing to the coward population. 3% of the population has to stand behind that flag and lay their lives on the line so you can post such whims.

I am starting to wonder if dope smoking is one of the causes of liberalism. The few liberals I have met smoked dope (meant as a pun) as youngsters and still do.

“Dozens”….

My goodness. Sounds like they’re practically on the verge of storming the Bastille. With a little recruitment, they might get up to “scores” or even “hundreds.”

Do they really think people buy into their histrionics?

Fat_Freddys_Cat | June 9, 2021 at 9:22 am

It strikes me that these are the same people who are shrieking about “treason” all the time.

Freedom of speech allows you to say things that demonstrate that you are a total asshole. It is a fool that takes advantage of that right though. This lady is a fool.

“Out of Context” ??

This video isn’t your typical prime time 9 seconds. It goes on for minutes.

Has anyone shown her a calendar? Independence day is right around the corner. Someone should clue her in on the schedule of Federal and State Holidays.

Particularly so if she will be traveling in some Southern States during the of observance of Confederate Memorial Day which is still listed on some State calendars….

She needs to see a psychiatrist. I recommend Dr. Aurna Khilanani who may be able to help her by fantasizig killing white people she don’t like. Or just go out and do it like many do.

For example in Latest News from Georgia: black man stabs 5 month pregnant white woman in back while walking on parkway.

alaskabob in reply to UserP. | June 9, 2021 at 11:21 am

Americaphobia. She just needs to avoid traveling to prevent contamination of her structural delusions.

NYT’s conclusion: no symbols should be permitted on hollowed grounds. To demonstrate their virtue, they have lowered their banner, removed the labels affixed to their building and publication, taken a knee in an act of self-flagellation for ever participating in the diversity (e.g. racism, sexism, ageism), inequity, and exclusion, and Planned several babies a.k.a. fetuses (to socially distance technicians and abortionists) for social progress.

The New York Times has been peddling lies for 100 years. Remember the Times Moscow Bureau Chief Walter Duranty, who won a Pulitzer by his glowing stories of Stalin’s Soviet Union, while thousands were being executed and millions starving to death?

Just another Deomcratic hack doing what she is told. Nothing to see here move along……
I did love the video of those two in the grips of TDS totally oblivious to what they were saying. Now is it more patriotic to apply a few swears to your political opponents or call them Nazis? Now is it more patriotic to fly the flag or burn it? Depends on who’s signing your check, I guess.

This is very confusing. I have been assured by the Very Smartest And Best People In The History Of The Universe (TM) that D-Day represented the largest Antifa gathering ever. Is Gay implying this was a bad thing?

If Gay is not careful the mostly peaceful Antifa may curb-stomp her for her blasphemy in a mostly peaceful demonstration.

“Mara Gay is part of the media smart-set.” More like Mara Gay is a beneficiary of affirmative action.

Her performance with Brian Williams shows both are as dumb as a brick.

Tens of millions of Trump supporters believe their rights are being infringed on simply by sharing this democracy…..

Wrong. The dishonesty is so thick. She knows that’s not what people believe. Why lie like a fool?

sheldonkatz | June 9, 2021 at 4:31 pm

First, she did not say “expletives,” she said “explicatives,” meaning the signs on the trucks she observed were trying to explain Joe Biden. None could do so. Nor can anyone else. Second, we do not have a “democracy.” What a moron. Third, what on earth is she talking about?

My suggestion for her is leave, it’s the USA and Trump was President of it.

Cheap grace? Grace is paid for in blood.

Even in Junta America, there is freedom to emmigrate. Yet none of these morons leaves?

Is it the free money – and the freedom to act like an ass?

This maggot is PROJECTING.

Be ‘disturbed’ by any ‘flag’ or symbol this idiot is associated with.

Secession anyone?

    Fine Proposes Succession

    – Not for the right to have slaves
    – Rather, for the right to avoid becoming one.

I agree with the purpose but question the method.
One thing is clear – things have to change fast.

OwenKellogg-Engineer | June 9, 2021 at 10:47 pm

I wonder if she is bothered by garlic, sunshine, or silver projectiles?

Dozens and dozens of pickups on Long Island? Bull! Few people on Long Island use a pickup for a personal vehicle if for no other reason then they aren’t aloud on the state parkways.

I sincerely hope Trump runs for President again.

It would permanently break the brains of the left and goad them into doing something even more blatantly criminal to stop him, so that this time they will get called on it and people will go to prison . . . it might even trigger the civil war that so many are hoping for.
