Professors Help Push Program That Claims Math is Racist
“White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions”
Math is explicitly non-racist, it simply is what it is. This is madness.
Campus Reform reports:
Profs help push program that claims math is ‘racist’ because it requires a ‘right answer’
An Oregon Department of Education newsletter from February promoted an online course designed to “dismantle” instances of “white supremacy culture in the mathematics classroom.” One example of “white supremacy” highlighted by the course was “the concept of mathematics being purely objective,” an idea which the resource stated is “is unequivocally false.”
The program, known as “A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction,” describes itself as “an integrated approach to mathematics that centers Black, Latinx, and Multilingual students” that provides “opportunities for ongoing self-reflection as they seek to develop an anti-racist math practice.”
The “feedback advisors” for a portion of the program include William Zahner, who is an associate professor at San Diego State University; Melissa Navarro Martell, who is an assistant professor at San Diego State University, and Elvira Armas, who is the Director of Programs and Partnerships for the Center for Equity for English Learners at Loyola Marymount University in California.
“White supremacy culture infiltrates math classrooms in everyday teacher actions,” the guide states. “Coupled with the beliefs that underlie these actions, they perpetuate educational harm on Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, denying them full access to the world of mathematics.”
The newsletter pitched the program to educators “looking for a deeper dive into equity work,” offering to teach “key tools for engagement, develop strategies to improve equitable outcomes for Black, Latinx, and multilingual students, and join communities of practice.”
The Oregon Department of Communications Director of Communications, Marc Siegel, told Campus Reform that math instruction should be built on an “equitable foundation.”

To the left, EVERYTHING must serve the revolution (du jour). Destroying math is just another day in that endless effort.
Seems like Oregon is under heavy attack. The ongoing senseless violence in Portland, now this.
I don’t want doctors, engineers, and scientists who are trained in equitable math and don’t reach the correct answer–if that makes me racist, so be it.
Damn this crap is frustrating …
Obviously, this is a necessary precursor before one can insist that 2+2=5.
That is coming, and we all know it.
So math instruction is about the student, not the subject matter?
How are they denied “full access”, whatever that means?
Multilingual students. I’m sure a physics major fluent in, say., English and German, doesn’t buy into this nonsense.
And crap like this is one major reason why I quit teaching higher ed math.

I will bet large amounts of money that none of these people have B.Math or similar degrees.
Do you want to cross that suspension bridge that was engineered by people who think mathematics is racist? I’ll take the long way around.
This explains why for certain groups the shortest distance between two points is frequently a downward spiral.
In my young and naive past, I heard an old, gruff fellow refer to professions involving math, engineering, physics, and chemistry as “white man’s work”. I thought him to be a terrible awful nasty no-good bigot.
Maybe, with the prevailing attitude of the lazier minorities, he was right.
All these fools should be fired for stupidity.
Remember that 2+2 = whatever Big Brother and the Ministry of Truth say it equals.
2+2=22, per this nine minute video that was not too amusing to my wife who spent a career teaching advanced HS Math courses in a major public school system.
This stupidity has been going on for quite a while. Fifteen years ago I interviewed an individual who got a logic problem wrong and then refused to accept that the correct answer was otherwise, insisting without justification that cultural differences were at issue and threatening a lawsuit if not hired.
I’ll bet these leftist professors are a little more tidy when it comes to their paychecks.
