It seems former President Obama didn’t get Joe Biden’s memo about unity. In his new podcast with noted Trump-hater Bruce Springsteen, he said that white ‘resistance and resentment’ has prevented reparations.
Can we finally dispel this notion that Obama is some healing, unifying figure?

Former President Barack Obama blamed “the politics of White resistance and resentment” as the reason why he didn’t push financial reparations for Black Americans during his presidency.
On Monday, Obama and rock and roll legend Bruce Springsteen released the second episode of their new podcast, “Renegades: Born in the USA,” where they spoke about race relations in the United States.
Toward the end of the episode, the two hosts spoke about reparations to Black Americans and whether or not the controversial policy would come to fruition.
Obama said he believes reparations are “justified” and that “there’s not much question that the wealth… the power of this country was built in significant part — not exclusively, maybe not even the majority of it, but a large portion of it — was built on the backs of slaves.”
The former president claimed that a reparations proposal didn’t make its way through the lawmaking process during his presidency due to “the politics of White resistance and resentment.”
Dave Urbanski of The Blaze notes that Obama’s position on reparations was different when he was first running for president in 2008:
“We can’t even get this country to provide decent schooling for inner-city kids,” Obama also said, according to the Post. “And what I saw during my presidency was the politics of white resistance and resentment. The talk of welfare queens and the talk of the undeserving poor. And the backlash against affirmative action. All that made the prospect of actually proposing any kind of coherent, meaningful reparations program … not only a non-starter but potentially counterproductive.”
Fox News said it appears the former president has changed his position on reparations, as he opposed the idea during his 2008 presidential campaign and argued that “the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed.”
So. Much. Unity.

His premise is incorrect. Slavery was always an economic minus not a plus. Slavery made a few people rich and kept the average man very poor.
If you built a building using slaves, it was because they worked cheap. For free men to get a job working on the building, they had to work cheaper than the slaves. Slavery dramatically lowered the price of labor.
Plantations used slaves to scale farming, something that free farmers could not do until the adoption of the tractor. Once again, Plantations pushed down the value of agricultural goods. Free farmers had to sell at or less than Plantation prices. And, that kept them poor.

Anyhow, slavery did not build anything much outside the old-Confederacy, and the vast majority of people did not own slaves. Poor southern “whites” were also victimized by the “peculiar institution” of slavery – in different ways, but they were, such as all those who were drafted into military service and died or were maimed to defend it. Then, too, what do we owe the hundreds of thousands in the Union armies and dissenters in the South who were sacrificed, often with their lives, to end it?
The restitution movement is poppycock. But, it we can use it to take away the money and power of the corporatist fascists who are promoting this nonsense to keep us divided and focused on the wrong enemies, then I’m for it.
I think we should give reparations to other countries who owned slaves before we consider doing it here becasue it’s wrong to put America First.

It is likely that the institution of slavery in America would not have existed but for the actions of dominant African tribes and Muslim slave traders who first enslaved people from weaker tribes and marched them to ports where they were resold to European merchants. I can’t imagine handfuls of pasty-faced, musket-armed 17th Century Dutchmen, English, Portuguese, Spaniards, etc. venturing hundreds of miles inland to capture slaves and sneak them out to the Americas.
Sure there would’ve been a few black slaves just like there were in Europe, but too few upon which to base an economic system.

Reoperations, if any, should be reduced for each IQ point above 64 (aprox average IQ when they disembarked), and any overage in IQ should be assessed by the same amount. Sadly there are African Americans who sincerely believe that the white man, or the white system, or some white “thing“ has held and is holding them down.

It is a fact that some African nations are calling for the “African Diaspora” to come home.
With publicly available technology, such as the services provided by 23 & Me, each one of us can determine the approximate geographical source of our DNA. Theses downtrodden African-Americans, who are never going to be happy in the United States, can discover where their DNA came from, I.e., what African nation their DNA is most prevalent in.
I suggest that The United States pay reparations of $700,000 for each adult African-American who wants to return to the land of their ancestors. $100,000 for each of their children under the age of 18.
The money would come from the foreign aid paid to each of the respective ancestral nations of those who want reparations. Thus this enterprise would be entirely revenue neutral to the United States of America.
The only conditions would be that, first, the emigrants would give up their American citizenship (in order to become citizens of their ancestral nations they should do that anyway) and, second, agree that they will never return to the United States of America.
This plan would be completely voluntary and it would be revenue neutral to the United States of America. Above all, it will allow those who feel trapped under the yoke of a white dominated society to live and to thrive among their own people.
Additional details would have to be worked out, but a lot of angry folks would get a fresh start with a significant chunk of change in their pockets, savor the feel of the land of their ancestors under their feet, and would get a chance to start over again, free from any form of white “tyranny”.

Who exactly do these reparations go too? I find it a bizarre idea there are so many issues morally with the idea of reparations. The fact that slavery and equal right have been granted for decades who exactly would benefit from and why. Is the suggestion that its divided equally between all black people in which case is there a consideration to give Jay Z a cheque? Do the present generation of black people really feel that reparations are morally justified when it was their ancestors who held the grievance not them? Then there is the point that slavery made America made tonnes of money out of slavery and there is an argument that by being in the States they have benefited indirectly from it by staying put. There is a further argument that suggests to that American being built from immigration can go the other way if America was really that bad in the eyes of specific inhabitants there is an argument that they could migrate somewhere else; that argument becomes stronger the greater the distance between the events.

There is really only one lesson here: Obama did not recommend reparations when he was President, and ran for that office twice without reparations as a part of his platform.
The first duty of a politician is to assemble a policy perspective and a coalition to get elected. Obama did that based on health care and being anti-war.
Once a politician has raised all the money he needs for his Presidential Library and does not need to run for re-election (or have his wife run), he becomes free to speculate and throw as many political brinks as he wishes.
President Obama’s answer to racial tensions was to hold a “beer summit” and to sing “Amazing Grace.” Both were much more impactful than reparations. If everyone responded with an offer of beer and “Amazing Grace” each time someone proposes reparations, the world would be a better place.
