As I noted in my previous posts on the recall efforts for California Gov. Gavin Newsom, there has been a steady increase in the number of petition signers in the wake of the French Laundry pandemic-rule-violation incident and continuing state lockdown measures.
The last time we checked, there were 1.2 million signers. A week later, the number has hit 1.3 million.
The petition to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom has reached approximately 1.3 million signatures.The group at Recall Gavin 2020 says they have six weeks left to get 1.49 million ballot signatures and are hoping to gather 2 million total ballot signatures.
The recall effort just got a significant boost, as citizen activist Scott Presler (aka The Persistence) is heading to California to help signature-gathering efforts and organize clean-up events. Presler will be in San Francisco on February 6 and Sacramento 7th.
As I mentioned in earlier posts, a recall effort won’t work unless Californians can rally around a replacement candidate in the second phase of the recall vote. Seeing political blood in the water, some of the state’s leading Republicans are beginning to emerge as potential recall challengers.
Backers of an effort to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom are still collecting signatures, but rivals are already announcing their intention to run.Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer plans to challenge the governor if the recall qualifies for the ballot this year, or in 2022 if it does not. In an interview with The Times, the Republican attacked Newsom’s handling of the economy, homelessness and the COVID-19 pandemic….Faulconer would be among the most prominent challengers to Democrat Newsom. He said he has already raised or received pledges for $1 million. Another Republican who said he will run in a recall election is businessman John Cox, who lost to Newsom in the 2018 gubernatorial race. Right-wing provocateur Mike Cernovich, who is registered as an independent voter, also said he plans to join the race.
Democrats are now beginning to challenge Newsom for his COVID-19 response, especially since the governor seems more inclined to open up the state in recent weeks.
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom has clashed with unions over schools reopening as coronavirus lockdown measures in the state are eased.Teachers unions have reportedly said they will not send their members into an unsafe environment, calling for all teachers to be vaccinated before returning to the classroom.But Newsom has told educators that it is unrealistic to vaccinate all teachers before school starts due to the shortage of jabs, according to the Associated Press.
The union workers are also unhappy that Newsom restructured to vaccine priorities list to…get this…prioritize vulnerable elderly citizens. Californian Democrats are beginning to break rank as frustration grows nearly a year into the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s like he’s putting us out to die,” said Sandra Díaz, vice president and political director of SEIU United Services Workers West, which represents janitors, security personnel and other essential workers who were recently removed from the state’s vaccine priority tiers by the Newsom administration. “It’s more important for us as a union to see this get better, no matter who that upsets.”
Perhaps we can really achieve unity in 2021!
