New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to terminate the city’s contracts with the Trump Organization due to the Capitol Hill riots.

New York is in the midst of unprecedented health and economic crisis, much of it due to de Blasio’s ineptness as mayor. He is using this situation to deflect and virtue signal to the left.

Karen Matthews reports at the Associated Press:

NYC to terminate Trump contracts after Capitol insurrection

New York City will terminate business contracts with President Donald Trump after last week’s insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Wednesday.

“I’m here to announce that the city of New York is severing all contracts with the Trump Organization,” de Blasio said in an interview on MSNBC.

De Blasio said the Trump Organization earns about $17 million a year in profits from its contracts to run two ice skating rinks and a carousel in Central Park as well as a golf course in the Bronx.

The city can legally terminate a contract if the leadership of a company is engaged in criminal activity, the Democratic mayor said.

“Inciting an insurrection — let’s be very clear, let’s say the words again — inciting an insurrection against the United States government clearly constitutes criminal activity,” he said.

Antifa and Black Lives Matter rampaged through the city, burning and looting as they went, and this buffoon joined them in protest outside of Trump Tower. Now he cares about following the law? Please.

Adam Shaw of FOX News has a response from the Trump organization:

The Trump Organization pushed back, with a spokesperson telling Fox News that it was “another example of Mayor de Blasio’s blatant disregard for the facts.”

“The City of New York has no legal right to end our contracts and if they elect to proceed, they will owe The Trump Organization over $30 million dollars,” the spokesperson said. “This is nothing more than political discrimination, an attempt to infringe on the First Amendment and we plan to fight vigorously.”

Maggie Haberman of the New York Times notes that this is easier said than done:

Wealthy people flee New York City in droves, and the millions left behind can’t pay their rent. Bill de Blasio has massive problems to deal with, yet has decided to devote his energy to one last round of Trump-bashing.

New York has not had a worse mayor in living memory.

Didn’t Donald divest himself of management of entities like this when he was elected?

What a petty little man. Really makes me hope there are significant penalties written into the contracts for early termination without cause.

Remember when I was jabbing a LI commenter about suffering from both TDS and the Little Person Syndrome? This form of crazy is quite common and is only cured by death. Mayor Bill de Blasio has a lot of company.

Milhouse in reply to Idonttweet. | January 14, 2021 at 6:29 pm

The penalties are mentioned right here in the post. At least according to Eric Trump, if the city carries through with this it will owe Trump $30 million. But by the time any legal action gets that far De Blasio will be gone and it’ll be the next mayor’s problem, so why should he care? He gets to make the grand statement, and the next mayor will foot the bill.

But “Occupy” and “Chaz” were cool, huh Komrade?

Good luck getting a claim of criminal conduct to stand up in court.

With the condition our court system is in, it would not surprise me if the judge went in favor of the mayor, regardless. It all depends on which side of the bed he gets up on, and whether or not the wife burned the toast.

You would have thought they would at least have to wait until someone is convicted. There is the additional point that incitement to insurrection has a high bar of proof.

In case there’s ever any doubt about Mr. DeBlasio’s standing as New York City’s Worst Mayor Ever, this might serve as the tie-breaker.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair | January 14, 2021 at 4:11 pm

DeBlasio claiming that Trump incited an insurrection?? LOL. What happened at the Capitol was nothing even close to a riot, let alone an insurrection, but DeBlasio gave aid and comfort to actual insurrectionists, who terrorized New York City day after day while DeBlasio made sure they were able to by tying down the NYPD and putting all property and citizens on a platter for his America-hating insurrectionist co-conspirators to do with as they would. Then, to add insult to injury, he decided that the most important thing to do while New York city was being pillaged and burned was to use the public roadways as propaganda pieces for his insurrectionists and paint the banners of terrorist organizations on them in front of one of Trump’s landmark buildings (as if there was even any justification for putting any sort of marks on a roadway that didn’t have something to do with … traffic and actual road regulations).

I said it then and I will repeat it, it was a terrible mistake to let the democrat insurrectionists get away with their massive crimes last summer. That sort of hands-off approach to the worst criminality in US history would inevitably lead to those same insurrectionists starting to accuse everyone else of exactly what they did … because that is how leftists ALWAYS do things. Insurrectionist governors and mayors and police chiefs should have been dragged out of their beds in chains that summer and the mobs on the street should have been met with immediate deadly force.

Did he inherit or marry into a living? If he has any practiced abilities or talents they have yet to be discovered.

His skill is in living off of the public. It works fine for him – so he thinks socialism will work for everyone. Even Cuomo, as left as they come, hates DeBlasio.

Milhouse in reply to NotKennedy. | January 14, 2021 at 6:37 pm

I don’t think either his parents or his in-laws had any money to speak of. His parents were communists (so he comes by it honestly), and I don’t know anything about his in-laws.

He did inherit a rather nice house from his mother, on the same block as his own house; they’re each worth about $2M, but that’s only since real estate went up in the last 20 years. Before that it wasn’t such a great neighborhood; until about 1980 or ’85 it was dangerous and property prices were low.

The NY City Council put his wife in charge of an $850 million mental health project, but Mz. Mayor cannot account for where the money went. (Research for yourself – search terms: DeBlasio wife missing millions)

randian in reply to Idonttweet. | January 14, 2021 at 10:10 pm

Of course she can’t account for it. If she did I have no doubt such an accounting would show how much she embezzled.

Thanks to William Barr, this will never go punished, and in fact will become a feature on our banana republic.

It’s already a feature. Where do you think tens of millions of “missing” dollars in the state department budget went during Hillary’s reign under Obama? I have no doubt a bunch of it went into Hillary’s pocket, and probably Obama’s too. Maybe some spread around to others at State to keep them quiet. The auditor bizarrely did no forensic investigation of the outgoing cash to see whose accounts it went to. I also wonder how much cash Obama helped himself to during the Iran payoff.

Union-of-Taxpayers | January 14, 2021 at 4:24 pm

The problem is that taxpayers are not united. Politicans have become so good as distracting from what really matters. NYC taxpayers have to join together to gain power and make real change. Separately we have no voice – together we win.

Nothing will change until taxpayers STAND UP.

Is there any chance for the City to bounce back? Are the people still living there smart enough to consider voting for a non-Democrat? Or will it take a zombie apocalypse to convince them to think differently?

LI did a story a few months ago about ongoing taxpayer revolt in NYC. MSM does not cover what’s happening in the City. NY Post has done a couple of stories – that’s basically it.

The City tax base has shrunk and remaining taxpayers have caught on to the fraud. There is a systemic bias against taxpayers in NYC b/c the NYC politicans have engineered it to disenfranchise taxpayers. In fact, 54% of NYC voters pay ZERO tax. It’s no wonder the politicans who promise the most free stuff win. See story on blog:

I am beginning to think that we should send top Dems for a vacation with the Korowai tribe in Papua New Guinea. I am sure that the tribe could find a use for them. It is worthwhile looking into the Korowai.

It won’t keep them from auditing him for the rest of his life.

“”due to the Capitol Hill riots””

It doesn’t help anything for you to repeat leftist talking points.

Comanche Voter | January 14, 2021 at 5:00 pm

Come on man—Bill go terminate those contracts; get the city sued for $30 million. Bill you should STFU and GFY if you know what I mean and I think you do.

It’s probably a popular stance in NYC. If you look at the county results in NY State from November, the counties that make up New York city are the bluest in the country. King’s County voted 85% for Dementia Joe. None of the others were below 70%.

“Wealthy people flee New York City in droves, and the millions left behind can’t pay their rent. Bill de Blasio has massive problems to deal with, yet has decided to devote his energy to one last round of Trump-bashing..”

It is the Curley Effect:

https://scholar.harvard.edu/files/glaeser/files/curley_effect_1.pdf

The man from Planned Parent/hood speaks.

This is actually a good thing. Our base is a collection of the middle and upper middle class (and even the lower-class rich). WE HAVE THE MONEY.

Trump continues to expose corruption, treason and tyranny. And expose he does.

Let NYC under this idiot do what it wants. Our base can make or break anything: we have the money and we have the votes (if they count).

That said, respond in kind: boycott NYC while di blasio is infesting it.

Same with Marriot, Disney and any other entity trying to oppress us by enabling fascism.

A bartender, whose only life achievements have been as a bartender for a short period of time, is leading the charge to set the First Amendment on its head.

At least Hitler was a war hero. And Stalin was a successful leftist gangster. And Mao was a rather accomplished communist killer before he gained ultimate power.

After obama, even the standards for fascist leaders is in the toilet.

So Reichsfuhrer DeBlasio wants to let President Trump out of contracts that they don’t have the money to pay anyhow? Very nice of him.

Now that the progressive fascists control the federal government you can expect them to pay the debts of the progressive fascist run cities and states. Chicago, Illinois and NYC will avoid the consequences of their miss governance.

the lawsuits will be fun! bozo is really that bad – he has no idea.

Antifundamentalist | January 14, 2021 at 10:12 pm

Doesn’t there have to be a conviction for criminal activity? Or does “innocent until proven guilty in a court of law” only apply to the Left?

No, there doesn’t have to be a conviction. The contract says they can terminate if there was criminal activity, not a criminal conviction. So as soon as the activity happens they can terminate the contract, and if (when) Trump sues it will be up to a civil court to decide, on the balance of probability, whether the alleged criminal activity did happen. If it finds, on the balance of probability, that there was no criminal activity then the city will have to pay.

What’s sad is how great a job Trump did under those contracts.

Di blasio is trying to destroy NYC. He’s doing a great jo of it.

Conveniently, he fails to address his own serious financial crimes.
