President Joe Biden intends to sign 17 executive actions, including 15 executive orders, which will reverse some of President Donald Trump’s policies and restore policies from President Barack Obama’s administration.
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayer swore in Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris at 12 PM ET. Press Secretary Jen Psaki said Biden “wants to roll up his sleeves and get to work as quickly as possible.”
Biden wants to implement a 100-day mask and social distancing mandate, but this can only happen in federal buildings and on federal lands. It can only affect federal employees and contractors.
However, governors, mayors, and local politicians might follow suit.
Biden will make the U.S. a part of the World Health Organization again. Trump started the process of leaving WHO after the organization helped China hide facts and figures behind COVID-19.
The U.S. will rejoin the Paris Climate agreement. Biden will end the Keystone XL pipeline and stop any oil and gas exploration and “development at national wildlife monuments.”
Incoming Domestic Policy Advisor Susan Rice promised the administration will “advance racial equity through the federal government.” They also want to broaden “the federal protections against sex discrimination to include LGBTQ Americans” in the workplace.
They will also end Trump’s 1776 Commission, which came out a few days ago. The commission sought to put facts about America’s founding back in the education system.
The Census will once again count non-citizens. This move “would affect federal allocation of money and federal representation.”
Biden will end the border wall construction and “preserve and fortify” DACA.
Another executive order will end the so-called “Muslim ban.”
Then there’s affordable housing, which includes extending eviction and foreclosure moratoriums:
To do this, Biden will call on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to re-implement and extend the already defunct moratorium until at least March 31. The new president will also call on the Departments of Agriculture, Housing and Urban Development, and Veterans Affairs to extend the foreclosure moratoriums for their federally backed mortgages. “These emergency measures are important,” Mr. Biden’s top economic adviser Brian Deese said on the call with reporters, “There are more than 11 million mortgages guaranteed by the VA, Department of Agriculture and HUD that would be extended.”
Biden wants to “cancel $10,000 of student loans,” but that needs to go through Congress. His Executive Order will continue to pause payments until September 30.
