Barr Appoints Special Counsel to investigate Russian probe

Tuesday, Attorney General Barr announced the appointment of Special Counsel John Durham a US Attorney, to probe the Russia investigation that targeted the Trump camp.

From the Associated Press:

Attorney General William Barr has given extra protection to the prosecutor he appointed to investigate the origins of the Trump-Russia probe, giving him authority to complete the work without being easily fired.

Barr told The Associated Press on Tuesday that he had appointed U.S. Attorney John Durham as a special counsel in October under the same federal statute that governed special counsel Robert Mueller in the original Russia probe. He said Durham’s investigation has been narrowing to focus more on the conduct of FBI agents who worked on the Russia investigation, known as Crossfire Hurricane.

Under federal regulations, a special counsel can be fired only by the attorney general and for specific reasons such as misconduct, dereliction of duty or conflict of interest. An attorney general must document such reasons in writing.

The investigations grew out of allegations of cooperation between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russians to help him defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton.

“I decided the best thing to do would be to appoint them under the same regulation that covered Bob Mueller, to provide Durham and his team some assurance that they’d be able to complete their work regardless of the outcome of the election,” Barr said Tuesday.

Biden’s transition team didn’t immediately comment on the appointment.

The current investigation, a criminal probe, had begun very broadly but has since “narrowed considerably” and now “really is focused on the activities of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation within the FBI,” Barr said. He said he expects Durham would detail whether any additional prosecutions will be brought and make public a report of the investigation’s findings.

In an Oct. 19 order, obtained by The Associated Press, Barr says Durham is authorized “to investigate whether any federal official, employee or any person or entity violated the law in connection with the intelligence, counter-intelligence or law enforcement activities” directed at the 2016 presidential campaigns, anyone associated with the campaigns or the Trump administration.

The special counsel rules say the appointed person should be outside of government, but Barr pointed to statutes that he said would allow him to go around that.

We pinned our hopes on Bill Barr because there was nowhere else to pin them.

But the investigation narrowed its focus. That means it will bring us good news! The FBI and other agencies are basically blameless. The only wrongdoer will be identified as an FBI lawyer, Kevin Clinesmith, who made a few innocent mistakes in altering government documents. Hillary Clinton, James Comey, John Brennan, Susan Rice, Glenn Simpson, John Podesta, Rod Rosenstein, Emmet Sullivan, and of course our beloved Barack Obama will be found completely innocent of any wrongdoing.

I didn’t pin my hopes on anything.

I’ve said openly for a year that this was all bullshit theatre, but way too many people drank the Koolaid of BuT bArR iS jUsT bUiLdInG a CaSe AnD iT tAkEs TiMe.

That’s not how you run a case that you actually want to prosecute. You indict and prosecute the guys that you have evidence to prosecute, and you force them to cut deals to implicate the higher ups or go to jail.

I’m years past the point of this RINO forever investigation crap where nobody gets indicted ever because We WaNt ThE bIg FiSh. You’re not getting ANYBODY, all you’re doing is spinning your wheels and preventing anybody else from actually doing anything.

I’m so sick of this RINO crap. Democrats are openly calling your bluffs. They’ll lie, cheat, steal, fraud, censor, and you do NOTHING.

This guy is a true Judas.

The Friendly Grizzly | December 1, 2020 at 7:34 pm

Trump sure knows how to pick ‘me.

What a joke.

It’s actually pathetic how transparent this is.

They did this crap ONLY so that they can refuse to declassify anything because ‘ongoing investigation’, to prevent Trump from releasing anything before he’s safely defrauded out of office.

Then they can sit on their fat asses for a few months and whitewash it once again with ‘lul no intent’.

I’m so sick of these RINO pieces of shit.

If ever we need the impetus to get the hell out of the GOP for good, this is it.

Hopefully, Trump will form a third party. Without us, the GOP has NO BASE. NONE.

Disgruntled Republicans AND Democrats should abandon their respective parties and re-register unaffiliated independent as soon as this is over. Nothing is frustrating pollsters for the Uniparty than figuring out how to appeal to independents. Trump figured it out to the consternation of the “experts”.

And having a flood of new independents would be a major boost for Trump should he not prevail in the vote count this year. Should he prevail, I intend to remain unless a reason emerges not to.

I’m not a Republican. I’m a Trumper. That’s the message. If there are enough of us, Trump could start his own party and let the Uniparty unite formally and we could return to a true two-party system.

Trump can declassify anything, regardless of the complaints.

This is a farce. The entire DOJ/FBI to the last man are corrupt, Barr included. He was there to see the institutions survived. There is no justice in America, simply punishment doled out unfairly and without conscience to the “enemies of the state”. Huber, Durham, Mueller, Comey…the entire FBI all corrupt liars. Barr hid the Biden laptop for an entire year..pedophilia, drug usage, bribery…he was OK with every bit of it…because these were his people. State Department employees giving false testimony at an impeachment trial, just fine. Wray openly lying to Congress.OK.

The Regulations say the Special Counsel must come from outside the U.S. Government.

Barr with his letter has established there are grounds. However, unless Durham resigned his position, the appointment may be invalid. If so, Barr should choose someone “with a reputation for integrity and impartial decision making,” using Mueller as an example of what not to do.

Yeah, he’s going to get it all done in a month!
What a hustler that guy is (in the pejorative sense of the word).

The excuse for the appointment was that Durham would be able to continue the investigation even if Biden is inaugurated. We’ll see.

Milhouse in reply to henrybowman. | December 1, 2020 at 11:18 pm

No, the whole point is that he doesn’t have to get it done in a month. He can drag it out and be as much of a pain in Biden’s side as Mueller was to Trump. And Biden won’t be able to fire him, for the same political reasons that prevented Trump from firing Mueller — it would look really bad and be taken as an admission of guilt.

Voyager in reply to Milhouse. | December 1, 2020 at 11:38 pm

If Biden can legally fire Durham, then he will, and possibly even if it is not legal. The news will report that it was a purely partisan investigation, and that the firing was fully justified to correct the historic injustice the Trump administration did to Biden.

Biden would not lose any of his supporters over it, and it would not alienate the Trump supporters any more than campaigning on them all being racist monsters already has.

UserP in reply to Voyager. | December 2, 2020 at 11:46 am

He most certainly can fire him. It doesn’t have to be legal. Most things the democrats do are not legal and yet nothing much ever happens. So why would this be any different?

      Publius_2020 in reply to Milhouse. | December 2, 2020 at 1:31 pm

      >> “for the same political reasons that prevented Trump from firing Mueller — it would look really bad and be taken as an admission of guilt”

Worse than that, because the Dems have laid a foundation that Trump’s firing (and even firing threats) constituted illegal obstruction of justice. Constitutionally, that’s mostly nonsense, but they’ve made that bed. So it will become very difficult for them to get out of it. Short version: the record they made with respect to Trump would make Biden firing Durham an impeachable offense.

        felixrigidus in reply to Publius_2020. | December 2, 2020 at 2:11 pm

That is only true if you believe anyone would play by the ad-hoc “rules” that according to the leftists and their propaganda machine apply to those outside their tent.

The smart play of the left would be to let it play out. There is zero chance that the result of the investigation will be timely. MSM, Twitter, Fakebook, and the other tech censors will reliably suppress anything that might harm the left’s position just as they would suppress any information on what they would have called obstruction of justice in the Russia collusion hoax “investigation”.

Of course, Biden is not entirely safe. He is not Obama, and the MSM and tech moguls may well decide that they prefer the extremist Harris administration, enough so to willingly sacrifice that particular pawn.

Republicans have a different set of rules. Actually, Republicans occasionally have to abide by the rules. Democrats–never.

Barr is a traitor, he needs to be shot.

The law regarding Special Councils requires that the candidate be from ‘outside the government’. Unless Durham resigned his position as an AG prior to his appointment as SC, then his appointment will last only until it is challenged in court.

Grrr8 American | December 1, 2020 at 9:54 pm

With the benefit of hindsight, it’s safe to say that Barr revealed himself when he announced that Jeffrey Epstein did in fact commit suicide.

Anthony Weiner laptop – MIA.

Hunter Biden laptop – sat on for a year, still MIA.

Durham report / indictments: due last May, then August, then can’t release it because that might constitute election interference (what a crock that latter is).

Huber / Clinton Foundation turned over to Durham — Durham scope now whittled down to next to nothing.

God help us if the coup succeeds and Donald Trump is not sworn in on January 20, 2021! We will be (irreversibly) on the path to a global totalitarianism under the Paris Accords = Green New Deal = Great Reset planned for us by the oligarchs.

Durham? Again? Pardon me, but his performance has been underwhelming to date. is he the only one to choose from?

I believe most if not all of the heavy lifting of the Spygate investigation has been done. There are so many aspects to it because Spygate was the deepstate’s attempt at covering up decades of corruption. For example, the FEYES portion alone entails: hillary>fusiongps>steele>brennan>comey>both ohrs>British/Australian intelligence and others>US Congress/Senate personnel>james wolfe and I could go on and on. Many of the investigations overlap with others. Running this investigation required a reasonable but tight span-of-control. Bill Barr would still have his hands full with the vastness of this situation, so trusting subordinates and delegating authority here would have been critical and necessary. I believe AG Barr has created the appearance of dithering and fecklessness, but has overseen a very effective investigation. This battle had to be fought a different way than what we are used to seeing. The Trump Presidency and Administration are like nothing we’ve ever experienced in our lifetimes. It’s impossible to count how many times he’s survived the “WE GOT HIM NOW!!!” proclamations. The President of the United States is universally known to be the most powerful position in the world. PDJT not only knew this going in, he was prepared to protect and defend our Constitutional Republic using the vast powers of that Office. Sure, I could be wrong, but I’m never going to surrender to the left. Never.

What many people forget is that the people who were investigated in the Durham report are also involved/connected to the octapus’ head. If there is going to be some arrests soon, it doesn’t matter who arrests them for what. It’s the same people involved in so many of the crimes. All of these arrests will create a trail to drag in with further arrests.

I really don’t think this has anything to do with next year after January 22. Something is about to happen.

Tar and feathers needs to come back into vogue.

There is one possible positive interpretation of this. As we are witnessing with the various voter fraud cases, evidence is being destroyed, lost or kept away from Powell, Wood and Giuliani. Powell and Wood openly declare that this is a vast conspiracy involving “both” political parties, oligarchs (Bill Gates e.g.) and foreign nations (especially China, Iran and Russia). Maybe Barr did this at this time to stop the destruction of the evidence that will be needed later?

Lin Wood is openly declaring that a large number of very prominent figures (of which we will learn very soon) will wind up in prison. Someone has to do the arresting and it won’t be local sheriffs or police.

It all depends on where your mind is. If you believe that EVERYONE is corrupt, then it is hopeless. Lin Wood, Sydney Powell, and Rudy Guliani sound very, very confident in winning and they must be close because GA governor Kemp and his mafia Secretary of State (1st targets for Lin Wood) are now in hiding. Something is going to happen really soon and it will be big.

Sorry, I didn’t want to break up this orgy of hopelessness. As Milhouse keeps explaining to us idiots, we can’t win. The US constitution is a suicide pact.

Much depends on who Durham is, I mean, who is he really? Does anyone know?

That is the question all around. Like all of these new Republicans in the House. It’s not about knowing. There is only one visible path to victory and we are all assuming plenty. I choose to assume that there are enough patriots in the right places who will do the right thing at the right time. Have faith.

First, Biden (or that tramp Harris) will fire Durham. The media will ignore it (meaning, half the nation won’t know about it) and that’ll be that.

OR: Durham comes out with a report of massive fraud, massive treason, massive this or massive that. The media will ignore it (meaning, half the nation won’t know about it) and that’ll be that.

We need to secede from the nihilistic toilet the United States has become. It’s not longer our country. It’s our own fault for hiring and re-hiring the GOPe for decades.

Nonetheless, if we get out now, we get out without a civil war. And if there is a civil war, there won’t be any winners: just most American cities and counties turned into lawless hellholes, with strongholds of patriots. The fighting will NEVER stop.

Let’s cut our losses now, and make a smooth transition to the New America, and leave the corrupt trashcan that our country as a whole has become.

Sadly a yeaar to late. They are pissing into the hurricane force wind that is the Democrats administration.

Nothing will come of this. Biden’s handlers will end this investigation before anything really happens The Democrat media operatives in our Pravda will applaud the end of the baseless investigations. Then President Trump and his family will be persecuted for the next decade in order to frighten off anyone else who threatens the new aristocracy.

There is no rule of law any longer. It is just rule of power by the aristocracy.
