Clemson Students End Sit-in Demanding Resources for Sexual Assault Survivors

Sikes Hall sit-in ends following statement from Clemson University president
The Students for Survivors Coalition has decided to end their sit-in following the releasing of a statement this evening from Clemson University President Jim Clements acknowledging the issue of interpersonal violence on college campuses.
“For much of the past week, a group of students dedicated to combatting sexual and interpersonal violence has been working to raise awareness of these important issues through peaceful demonstrations on our campus,” said Clements in an email to campus.
“Clemson has a well-deserved reputation as one of the safest college campuses in the country, and we will continue to make this a priority. Sexual violence has no place on our campus and in our society, and we are committed to making continuous improvement in this, and all, areas related to the safety and well being of our students.”
The Students for Survivors Coalition originally began the sit-in on Oct. 21, demanding more resources for victims of interpersonal violence and sexual assault be made available to survivors on Clemson’s campus. The coalition’s battle dates back to last November when they first listed six action items and key resources they demanded from the university:
1. Separation of Title IX and interpersonal violence prevention offices.
2. Hiring of three (3) experienced, confidential, and certified advocates.
3. Trauma-informed training for key Clemson leadership.
4. Restructuring of student placement on the president’s Commission on Women.
5. Execution of a campus climate survey.
6. Creation of a women’s and gender center.
