What desperate action will Democrats take to delay the Coney Barrett confirmation?

NeverTrumper Steve Schmidt: Democrats “should be focused on one thing and one thing only. Delay. Make the majority move the calendar back for the first time. Even if it is for a day. The first day of delay is harder to come by than the second day.”

Between the debate and Trump going to the hospital after a positive coronavirus test, the Amy Coney Barrett Supreme Court nomination has been off the headlines.

But it’s certainly not forgotten. Democrats have been struggling to find a substantive line of attack that could derail the nomination. Here are some they have tried, none of which will go anywhere.

https://twitter.com/GD1082/status/1311981553044647936

Remember, Democrats don’t need to convince Democrats, they need to convince Republicans, and for that, there’s going to have to be a true bombshell.

Lacking substance, Democrats are invoking coronavirus, claiming it’s too dangerous to hold hearings or a floor vote. So far, Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell are not deviating from the timeline of a floor vote before the election.

Steve Schmidt, a Never-Trump ex-Republican who makes Rick Wilson and George Conway seem tame by comparison, says Democrats need to do whatever it takes to delay. Delay is the only hope, invoking in a Twitter thread the imagery of slowing down a train to rob it (emphasis added):

I spent a lot of time focused on thinking through how they

Could be derailed or stopped. The best way to think about this is to imagine the goal of trying to rob a safe full of gold on a train @1880. What is the first thing you have to do? Obviously, you have to get on the train and make it to the safe. Of course that means the

Train has to be slowed, stopped or derailed. Slowing the train by all procedural means has to be the Democratic strategy. The minority should be focused on one thing and one thing only. Delay. Make the majority move the calendar back for the first time. Even if it is for a day.

The first day of delay is harder to come by than the second day. Barrett has serious omissions on her disclosure forms that require the time for appropriate scrutiny. There is a crisis of lying and coverup around Covid, the President’s condition, the extent of exposure

and specifically GOP Senate exposure. The White House and Campaign are in chaos. Strike now. Delay delay delay

Get it, give Democrats an inch, and they will demand another inch, and by then it’s a yard and we’re beyond November 3, and then it’s (possibly) a lame duck session and it will be easier for Democrats to peel off Republican votes.

So don’t give an inch.

What will Democrats and their supporters do? A bomb threat? A riot? Something worse?

ram it through, and let them scream…

it’ll get them warmed up for the YUGE Red Landslide of PDJT’s re-election. 😎

This is the same bunch of unethical people who soiled themselves with the Kavanaugh “hearings.” The presentation by the Democrats at that time was the kind that would have drawn sanctions in the form of loss of a case, money damages, and attorney’s fees if it were done before a trial or appellate court.

I don’t care if this appointee is confirmed without a hearing. Fill the seat. People with unclean hands forfeit the right to be heard.

I want to stay anonymous, but I once say Judge Coney Barret kick a puppy. She was waling down the street, dressed like a hooker going to a Quaalude rape party with Brett Kavanaugh, and they came up on this innocent little puppy on the sidewalk, and she just kicked it! It was horrible! I have never seen such cruelty. in fact, I could not have imagined such depravity before I saw it! For the love sweet Gaia, don’t let this evil on the court. Soon, she and the evil Kavanaugh, and the other racists on the court, like Clarence Thomas, will force us all to kick puppies! Have you not seen all those commercials about neglected and abused animals? Set them free, and put Republicans in those cages, before it’s too late!

“We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering. You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land, and air, with all our might and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: It is victory, victory at all costs, victory in spite of all terror, victory, however long and hard the road may be…. We shall go on to the end. ….we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,”
-Winston Churchill

I am not even convinced that it becomes harder to get a vote to confirm ACB after the election, especially if Trump can somehow manage to win. For example, take Collins, who is a “no” now. If she wins re-election, it costs her little to then vote for ACB. If she loses, it costs her nothing. Also, Manchin was the only Dem to have the integrity to vote for Kavanaugh. ACB is an even better nomination.

    healthguyfsu in reply to jb4. | October 5, 2020 at 10:40 pm

Don’t get Manchin credit for integrity. He voted yes to impeachment. The guy does just enough to try to get re-elected in West Virginia.

They’ll say she’s involved in human trafficking from poor countries, like Haiti, that she chains black children into “slave airplanes” and brings them to the US to do “chores” for white families, and that she gives them what she calls ”love” – which, of course, we know as “slavery.”

I would not be surprised if that is their approach and I rather hope it is. Against ACB it might cost them the Presidential election and their chance to take control of the Senate.

Get it, give Democrats an inch, and they will demand another inch, and by then it’s a yard

Exactly what we saw with the Kavanaugh hearings.

MoeHowardwasright | October 5, 2020 at 9:35 pm

Don’t give a millimeter! Hold the hearing and have the vote by the 26th of October at the latest. Tell the dems to pound sand. Let the American public see these power hungry, American hating, a:$holes for what they are.

Don’t give the communists one goddamn thing.

The more they push, the more they will encounter pushback.

To be honest, we can expect ANY desperate action up to and including multiple assassination attempts from the President on down through the nominee and the Senators. The Left obeys no laws, no Constitution, and no decency as Americans because they regard us all as enemies. Every day the split becomes wider, and they do not even pretend to deny it.

Subotai Bahadur

I guess they want to force a recess appointment.
O.K.

Milhouse in reply to snowshooze. | October 6, 2020 at 1:54 am

For a recess appointment there has to be a recess. The senate can’t recess without the house’s permission. And it has by now established a standard of not recessing. The next opportunity for recess appointments is the intersession recess on January 3; and even then it’s not at all clear whether such appointments would be valid.

So, who verifies the verification?
I see no difference.
Nobody goes to jail.

Confirmation should already have been done.

They’ll start throwing their feces again.

Four, three, two, one…

Three steps, as far as I can see:
1) Ask hundreds of inane, senseless questions that need to be responded to in writing (they can just copy the vast multitude asked of previous Republican SC justices) and throw half of them at her an hour before the hearing starts, so they can whine about delaying the hearing so she can answer them.
2) Demand every piece of paper she’s ever touched since High School, including her yearbook, and a ten-page description of each.
3) Drag out every uncredible accuser they can find in the sewer, from people claiming her children were adopted illegally to wild claims about her cheating in school.

Each of which should be squelched in short order by a committee chair willing to stand up for what is right.

That steve schmidt is some rat, huh?

Barry Soetoro | October 6, 2020 at 2:17 am

Which Democrat Senator will intentionally contract SARS-2 to liberally spread it on the floor of the Senate to engineer a biocrisis? Graham and O’Connell need to have a protocol in place to hold hearings and votes remotely.

Barry Soetoro in reply to Barry Soetoro. | October 6, 2020 at 2:29 am

Chris Murphy, D-CT, and Brian Schatz, D-HI, are the two youngest male Senators, in their late 40s. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-NY, in her mid 50s, is the youngest female (lower risk than a male). These are the three most likely kamikazi Semators.

Unfortunately, nothing, no matter how outrageous, will surprise me. The Dems/Progs, with full support of the dinosaur media, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Democrat party, will convene the court of public opinion. There, the new standard of guilt is a preponderance of innuendo. Tsk, tsking and eye rolling are taken as proof positive. Justice Baratt should be sworn in by the end of October.

It’s really up to McConnell and Graham to NOT CAVE… for once. They are the only ones who can mess this up. There is nothing the Dems and NeverTrumpers can do. Graham needs to shut down the hearings the moment the Dems start in and refer to to the floor for a vote. Then it’s up to McConnell to maintain discipline among the Republicans and get the votes.

I particularly don’t trust the utterly unctuous Graham to do anything right.

McDaddy and Graham aren’t the problem. Its the other little bitches such as Romney, the China lady and the other 2 ball-less wonders who are the problem. Its time proper Republicans were put in to position so that the old Republican party (just like the Democrat party by spelt with an R) can be laid to rest once and for all.

McConnell and Graham are Senate Majority Leader and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman respectively. THEY are in control of the process. McConnell has the power to destroy the careers of the Romneys, Collins, and their ilk and they know it. That places the blame squarely on their shoulders if once again, the GOP drives to their own goal line only to deliver another epic victory to the Democrats. We’ve seen this movie before.

These two career polymorphs don’t deserve our gratitued yet. Save it for if/when they deliver the goods. COD.

Larry Charles in reply to Pasadena Phil. | October 6, 2020 at 2:53 pm

    Graham makes me nervous too.

I expect there will be hard core activists armed with cameras trying to create some kind of incident in and about the hearings a la Kavanaugh.

Steve Schmidt, the handler assigned by the Republican National Committee to VP nominee Sarah Palin, along with Nicole Wallace. A clear indication of how screwed up the McCain presidential campaign was and a peek behind the curtain at the Bush/McCain Republican Party.

They could use biological warfare like the Chinese. Have a fanatical Dem with coronavirus infect as many Republican Senators so they won’t be able vote on the nomination.

Barry in reply to ConradCA. | October 6, 2020 at 11:59 am

The constitution does not say senators cannot vote while infected with a virus.

They can hold the voting open for a week if need be while each senator walks in alone to cast a vote.

Almost the entire Trump Administration getting the cough at the same time give you any clues?

Larry Charles | October 6, 2020 at 2:50 pm

That skunk Steve Schmidt was one of John McCain’s campaign geniuses. A fat backstabbing slob.
