FBI and DNI: Iran interfering in election to damage Trump, sending fake emails and other cyber activities
Purported threatening emails from “Proud Boys” were Iranian fakes. Russia also has voter information, but so far has not taken any actions.
The Director of National Intelligence just gave an emergency statement. Iran and Russia obtained voter information, and Iran has been sending fake emails trying to sow discord and damage Trump. Russia has not yet taken any action.
While they didn’t say it, it appears that threatening emails supposedly from the “Proud Boys” actually were Iranian fakes.
WaPo confirms the “Proud Boys” emails were from Iran:
The U.S. government has concluded that Iran is behind a series of threatening emails arriving this week in the inboxes of Democratic voters, according to two U.S. officials.
Department of Homeland Security officials told state and local election administrators on a call Wednesday that a foreign government was responsible for the online barrage, according to the U.S. officials and state and local authorities who participated in the call, who all spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity. A DHS official also said authorities had detected holes in state and local election websites and instructed those participating to patch their online services.
The emails claimed to be from the Proud Boys, a far-right group supportive of President Trump, but appeared instead to be a deceptive campaign making use of a vulnerability in the organization’s online network.
First divulged on Tuesday by local law enforcement and elections officials in Florida and Alaska, the emails were soon turned over to federal authorities, according to U.S. officials.
The messages appeared to target Democrats using data from digital databases known as “voter files,” some of which are commercially available. They told recipients the Proud Boys were “in possession of all your information” and instructed voters to change their party registration and cast their ballots for Trump.

Proud Boys are not really far right (or left or in the middle). They have no ideology. Their major shictk it say the opposite of whenever someone else is sending violent message. It is more a group that advocates free speech, and they like to get physically in the middle of that issue.
Let’s see. We have an account associated with the Iranian government sending out emails purporting to be from Trump supporters and that’s improper election interference. But a super PAC associated with Chuck Schumer is responsible for a tweet forwarding a false letter falsely claiming the Iowa Farm Bureau had withdrawn support for a Senate candidate, that’s OK, right?
And Iran? Iran’s so far away!
However, the threatening e-mails being received by Trump contributors are, apparently, authentic.
