U. Pittsburgh Cardiologist Removed From Fellowship Program After Criticizing Affirmative Action

“A peer-reviewed journal recently published an article, authored by a member of the University community, that expressed views against equity and inclusivity.”

Has anyone in academia ever been punished for criticizing Republicans, or President Trump? It seems like every time something like this happens, it’s because the person said something the left didn’t like.

Hank Berrien reports at the Daily Wire:

University Of Pittsburgh Cardiologist Is Stripped From Fellowship Program After Criticizing Affirmative Action

A cardiologist who was on the staff of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center was removed from a fellowship program after he published a paper criticizing affirmative action efforts, the University Times reported.

Norman Wang’s paper, originally published in the Journal of the American Heart Association (JAHA) on March 24 and later redacted by JAHA in August after it elicited blowback, stated that there “exists no empirical evidence by accepted standards for causal inference to support the mantra that ‘diversity saves lives,’” adding, “Long-term academic solutions and excellence should not be sacrificed for short-term demographic optics.”

On August 6, Senior Vice Chancellor for the Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine Anantha Shekhar tweeted:

A peer-reviewed journal recently published an article, authored by a member of the University community, that expressed views against equity and inclusivity. These views do not reflect the values of the University of Pittsburgh and its School of Medicine or our proud pursuit of disseminating knowledge for the public good. … As an institution and a community, we do not condone racism or discrimination of any kind, and we remain absolutely committed to realizing a more inclusive and equitable environment for all.

Berrien includes this quote from Wang’s paper:

To be sure, while rules are different for different people, devices like affirmative action are needed to prevent explosions of anger. Practically, affirmative action is probably necessary. But I would not want to know that I received a job simply because I am black. Affirmative action tends to undermine the spirit of individual initiative. Such is human nature; why struggle to succeed when you can have something for nothing?”

What is wrong with that?

Affirmative action is the opposite of competence hiring. I would not want an affirmative action cardiologist treating me. It could lead to death or worse.

As someone who had a number of cardiologists poking around in his chest this last week, trust me, I was vetting their qualifications regardless of race, creed, or color. I remember the first guy stopping and thinking, “wait, patients don’t ask that question right off the bat?” On a plus note, the consult took 5 minutes and not an hour with charts and diagrams being pulled off the wall to point things out.

Affirmative action has diluted and dumbed-down education to the extent of valueless degrees conferred upon medicority with no greater purpose than to foster the education “system”.

The federal government is ill served by participating and financing programs that, had the student had to pay for the program they would not have enrolled in the program.

OTOH, were it not for such affirmative action, I expect that many folks might never have found meaningful or gainful employment.

It is not possible for a socialist liberal to grasp that having a government entity as a major participant in an economy will always lead to inefficiency, at best, and abject failure as seen in SeanPennezuela.

Actually, the reason the Left pushes so hard for EVERYONE to attend college is that college is the final step in the Leftist indoctrination process that now begins when our children are still in diapers (courtesy of the popular culture (television)). If you doubt what I am saying, you need look no further than the products turned out by the nearest college to wherever you may live.

Ah, no, that is not correct. The author of the article appropriately questioned the wisdom of lowering standards in order to allow the implementation of an unconstitutional quota system intended to increase the representation of certain groups in the school. Since the members of those groups appear unable to meet the required academic standards, it hurts the school, the rest of the student body, and the members of those groups as well (since they will almost certainly have a very difficult time academically) to have such a program.
