NY Times union calls for racial quotas in hiring and staffing, euphemistically called “equity”
Calls for Times workforce to “reflect the makeup of New York City—24% Black and over 50% people of color—by 2025” and “50% of candidates at each stage of each hiring process should be POC.”
A fashionable, and now pervasive, euphemism for racial quotas is “equity.”
That term should not be confused with “equality” or “equal opporunity,” as I explained in my post, NY Times Chief Classical Music Critic: End “blind auditions,” pick orchestra musicians based on race and gender:
On campus, this is called “equity,” a euphemism for racial, gender and other discrimination. It’s the opposite of equal opportunity, it’s demanding equal results even if it means discriminating against some people on the basis of race, ethnicity or other immutable factors. It’s the core driving the “antiracism” movement on campus. When campus activists and administrators say “equity” (as opposed to “equality”), what they really mean is discrimination based on race to achieve a desired racial outcome.
This “equity” discrimination is at the heart of the book How to Be Antiracist, which is being used as a teaching tool at universities throughout the country:
“The only remedy to racist discrimination is antiracist discrimination. The only remedy to past discrimination is present discrimination. The only remedy to present discrimination is future discrimination.”
This concept of quotas as equity is playing out in demands issued by the NY Times Guild, a labor union representing “over 1200 media workers.”
On July 31, 2020 the NY Times Guild issued a set of demands to the Times, including an explicit hiring and staffing quota based on race, Diversity, Equity, Inclusion: New York Times Employee Recommendation Memo:
We represent employees from every facet of The New York Times, from editorial to business, from specific departments to ERGs. We come to this meeting with a mandate for sustained change and urgency to engage in a very necessary and long-overdue discussion about how to improve the working experience of Black, Indigenous and people of color at the Times, BIPOC@NYT.
In addition to recommendations to form new committees, increase “diversity” initiatives, and so on, comes an explicit call for quotas, referencing census data for New York City:
We recommend:

Stereotypes are bad, even when they’re favorable to a group. We’re told this regularly, and it usually comes with some kind of garbage like “It’s unfair to think every member of group X can excel. As a group, they’re just people.”
The real reason is that the positive stereotype stands in contrast to the negative stereotype. To admit that the positive stereotype is an accurate observation of one group makes an argument for the accuracy of the negative stereotype as well, and we can’t have that.

The evolution of the American journalist is a fascinating study. For me, it might be an evolutionary transformation into what years back was a ready-from-the-start acceptance of the “stenographer” function in the role as scrivener, scribe, or copyist.
In any case, and whatever similarity or dissimilarity exists between stenographer, a correct assessment of today’s DNC affiliates masquerading as learned news/opinion professionals, and the aforementioned servants known to the ancient world, the journalism craft is fast disappearing into the mist of political hegemony and servitude in our once amazing and unique culture.
The smarter leftists know it can’t work, so they demand it for most American institutions and occupations. It’s intended to fail, and to bring down the hated United States along with it.
However, the dumber leftists actually believe in it: that you can hire (and enroll) based on victim group status rather than ability and get the same good results.

And why not give out “race proportional” grades to “historically underrepresented and marginalized” students of color no matter how badly they perform on tests. Hey, some students are demanding (and some colleges and universities are accommodating these demands) that black students should be allowed to skip finals altogether. Homework requirements are clearly racist. Hell, why should black students have to show up for classes at all.
The poor dears are too traumatized by the killing of George Floyd to take finals, do homework, or even show up to class. Just hand out “A”s like Halloween candy. That would solve the problem of admitting black students to “elite” ivy league schools with lower SAT/ACT scores then Latino students, white students, and a whopping 400 point lower score than Asian students.
At the moment SAT/ACT scores are the best indicator of who is going to succeed in college and who isn’t. But that’s only true if grades, actual homework, or even class attendance is involved. Eliminate those things and SAT/ACT scores are no longer indicative of anything. Then, take it a step further and eliminate SAT/ACT testing entirely. Actually, seniors graduating this year aren’t going to be required to take any standardized tests to get into college. I predict this will become standard practice because according to leftist activists and race baiters standardized tests were developed by Klansmen and neo-nazis in order to preserve white privilege and keep black people down.
There you go! We have now perfected the education system. One teensy tiny problem remains. Employers might have racist thoughts about how products of this now perfect education system might not be able to actually do the job. They might get this racist impression when these newly minted college grads demonstrate when they fill out an application and are interviewed that they are functionally illiterate and can’t do first grade math.
So eliminate job applications and interviews and we now have a perfect, non-racist society. In fact, eliminate the workplace and have everyone “telecommute” (wink, wink) as employers must be required never to expect any work product from employees. Employers will be required to just use direct deposit to provide employees there pay and forget what they even look like as employees won’t even be required to show up for anything at all. We can now do performance evaluations electronically. Which naturally will always be glowing with everyone getting top marks.
Results? Only racists care about results.

Diversity dogma, where racists, sexists, etc. hide in plain sight, is a class-based taxonomic system, process, and belief that denies individual dignity, individual conscience, supports affirmative discrimination, color quotas, and color blocs (i.e. inferential judgments). I have no problem with the New York ‘Marx Was Right!’ Times hiring based primarily on skin melanin content and claimed ‘gender’ rather than merit, qualifications, and experience.

Small problem: Isn’t what they’re demanding illegal? If they were to officially announce such a policy anyone turned down would have all the evidence they needed to sue.
But if they’re setting aside 6% of jobs for Haredim, I’m in business. As one of the relatively few in that number with a decent command of English grammar and spelling, I can write my own ticket. I’ve noticed for years that the NYT badly needs proofreaders; I can do that job and fill the Haredi quota. But yeah, that’s not what they mean.
All online media desperately needs proofreaders! When I was laid off in 2012, the first thing I did was write to several major online media sites and offered my services as a proofreader. I submitted examples of the errors that I had found in their copy from the very days that I wrote to them. Heard back from not a one. They just don’t care. They probably realize that most of the people reading their copy are less literate than are their writers, so what does it matter?
