Biden Will Shut Down The Country If “The Scientists” Tell Him To Do It

Critic: “whether to ‘shut the country down’ is an incredibly complex policy decision requiring political judgment and prudence about a million imponderables. Anyone who thinks that ‘the scientists’ have the right answer, as scientists, is unfit to decide.”

https://youtu.be/0ZKHHVoT_08

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris did their first post-convention interview with ABC News, which airs this weekend. In one segment, Biden is asked if he would shut the country down again, and Biden says he would do it, claiming he would listen to the scientists.

Millions of Americans of every political persuasion would be against this. The last shutdown began with the suggestion that we needed to close down for 15 days to slow the spread, and yet many places are still not fully reopen months later.

Matt Vespa of Townhall suggests this was the absolutely wrong answer, and I agree:

In Just 72 Hours, Joe Biden Might Have Paved the Way for the Democratic Party to be Totally Screwed in 2020

You know there’s that saying with Joe Biden: just let him talk. The man has insulted virtually every ethnic and racial group in the country over his long career. The man has diarrhea of the mouth. He also backed a bill that threw millions of black Americans into jail.

If there is one thing about locking people up, it’s that Biden is bound to make that a national policy regarding fighting the coronavirus. No jail time, but house arrest and nationwide mask mandates are coming. In an interview with ABC News’ David Muir which is set to air Sunday night, Biden might have just wrecked his 2020 hopes, and those for the rest of the Democratic Party. He’s for torching the economy via lockdowns if the scientists recommended it..

Here’s what Biden said, via ABC News:

Former Vice President Joe Biden said in an exclusive interview with ABC “World News Tonight” Anchor David Muir on Friday that as president, he would shut the country down to stop the spread of COVID-19 if the move was recommended to him by scientists.

“I would shut it down; I would listen to the scientists,” Biden told Muir Friday, alongside his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., during their first joint interview since officially becoming the Democratic Party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees.

Watch the clip below:

Here are a few reactions:

Harvard Law professor Adrian Vermeule notes how relying on “the scientists” is a gross oversimplification:

whether to “shut the country down” is an incredibly complex policy decision requiring political judgment and prudence about a million imponderables. Anyone who thinks that “the scientists” have the right answer, as scientists, is unfit to decide.

Frankly, I’m tired of being lectured about science from the party that believes gender is a social construct, and that COVID-19 magically avoids left wing political protests.

Typical of Democrats, they always confuse knowledge with wisdom.

“The Scientists” = “The Voices in My Head”

This is rationality really bothers me. If the doctors say we should shut it down, we should shut it down. Why because they are the experts, if the experts say we should do it, we should do it.

By that reasoning when generals. the military experts, say that we should go to war, we should go to war. Been there, done that, don’t want to do it again.

No, you’re looking at it wrong. The Democratic version of ‘The scientists’ is actually ‘Anybody who agrees with me’

There’s a tautology in Dem minds. Science only produces results that agree with their preconceived notions. If a scientist produces a result contrary to the Narrative, by definition, that person is not a scientist. Example: Bill Nye, who agrees with Catastrophic Man-Made Climate Change, is therefore a scientist. Larry Bell, an actual scientist who disagrees, is not.

The same thing applies to anything related to the pandemic. The Dems decide what they want to do, then go pick out ‘scientists’ who agree with their conclusions. It’s as simple as that.

Since thee is no science to back up this ignorance. What are you going to use when you put the jackboot of government on our throats? Trump 2020

“No lesson seems to be so deeply inculcated by the experience of life as that you should never trust the experts. If you believe the doctors, nothing is wholesome; if you believe the theologians, nothing is innocent; if you believe the soldiers, nothing is safe. They all require to have their strong wine diluted by a very large admixture of insipid common sense.” ~ Lord Salisbury, 19th Century British PM.

Also, where does Biden think he would get the authority to “shut the country down”? When Trump was threatening to take action on a national scale to open up, Biden’s party was screaming “10th Amendment! 10th Amendment!”

    Superb quote.

This would actually be a two-fer. It would solve global warming and it would turn us all into government dependent Democrats. It won’t stop the disease, mind you.

Trump and his handlers are suffering from a serious case of TDS. Trump says he will never shut down the economy and Biden has to say he would. Pathetic is the only word that comes to mind.

Maybe Joe should give us a hint as to just who these scientists might be. Surely those who currently occupy the chairs on the bridge of CDC will not do since they are providing input now.

We have had scientists tell us to prepare for the return of the ice age back in the 70s; yet no frozen tundra in Dallas. Then there were the ones who have been beating us with global warming/climate change for decades; yet no beach condos in Searchlight, NV. Don’t talk to me about green energy and all those faux-science people… I finally bought a generator so I could be certain of power to run my well to fight the fire when it comes… Viva propane!

Ol’ Joe should give us more details.

Yep. Was just reading this morning about how “the scientists” in our government had predicted a few years back that all the glaciers in Glacier National Park would be gone by the year 2020. That’s what all their brilliant scientific “global warming” models told them would happen. It’s now 2020, and the glaciers are still there. Instead of admitting that “the scientists” and their models were wrong, the government just deleted the prediction.

So yeah Joe, let’s trash our economy and bankrupt millions of Americans based on what “the scientists” predict will happen. What could possibly go wrong?

In 2018 I took my nephew to Hurricane Ridge which is on the north side of the Olympic National Park. At the observation point there are several USFS (?) plaques pointing out glaciers with photos from when the park was new and current photos showing how the glaciers have retreated. Of course the plaques attributed the cause to climate change / global warming.

No way could it be the usual historical pattern of climate change seen throughout the earth’s history. Definitely carbon emissions. Yep, that’s it. Let’s regulate it and tax it. That’ll cool things down. Well, industry and the economy at least …

Climate “scientists” were convinced in the early 70s that the long-term cooling cooling* was an indication that we were headed into an ice age. And the predicted dire results of that ice age was identical to the dire results predicted for the “global warming” that took the place of “global cooling.”

*This long-term cooling, from approx. 1940 through the mid-70s, has since been erased from the records by “adjustments” made by climate scientists in order to make the climate record appear to be one of warming. They have cooled the past, going back to the 1920s and warmed the last three decades or so, and have created a record of constant warming through the 20th Century.

Probably Fauci the Fraud – the Bernie Madoff of Medicine

The very same CDC scientists who Palm Beach County is quoting as saying “cloth masks are an effective defense against covid-19” to justify extending their emergency mask mandate another 30 days (that will make it 90 days so far). I expect them to extend it at least another two times to stretch it past the election.

It’s a shame no one will ask if he will listen to Antifa and BLM and burn the cities down because he would probably listen to them also.

Unintended consequences seems to be their hidden goal in life

Another Voice | August 23, 2020 at 11:49 am

“They all require to have their strong wine diluted by a very large admixture of insipid common sense.”

Applying Common Sense to any problem or situation for a Democrat is a complication to their indoctrination to group think or classes taken in “Critical Thinking Skills”.

“Science” is being used an a cudgel to stifle dissent. I’m supposed to trust the scientists when they are flying by the seat of their collective pants.

    MajorWood in reply to p. | August 23, 2020 at 6:33 pm

There are two types of scientists. Those with credentials, and those with credibility. Guess which side works for the democrats.

Ok Joe that position is at least defensible, wrong IMO, but still one can make an argument for technocrat rule.

Now let’s simply.follow the logic. If technocrats should decide upon our pandemic response and policies are you stating that:
1. A Biden administration will make the decision but will follow the plans of technocrats
OR
2. A Biden administration will delegate authority to the technocrats to impose their plan.

That’s a big distinction.

Now let’s have Joe address how a program is to be implemented in our federal system. Is.a Biden administration going to impose this plan by force upon State governments?

What about other issues? Would this technocratic rule be extended to the solvency of Social Security? The national debt? Defense Policy? Does rule by technocrats extend beyond the response.to Rona and if not why not? The logical case for allowing technocratic rule in place of our republic wouldn’t be limited to a single issue.

How about It Joe?

This is not a winning issue for the Communists. So it means they have decided to go all-in on widespread mail voting fraud, rampant terrorism and violence to suppress voting in non-Communist states, and (probably) stage a military coup if things still don’t go their way.

Comanche Voter | August 23, 2020 at 12:41 pm

I’ve got a liberal friend who rants that the Trump administration is “stomping on good science”. Which is pretty much the default Democrat position. The reality is that it’s tough to tell what “good” science is–although I think it means any “scientist” who agrees with the Democrat’s desired outcome.

Now a sitting President (of whatever party) is a practicing political scientist. He or she has to choose based on conflicting information received from others.

Most “scientists” of whatever specialty tend to focus on their area of interest and not much else. Consider what the world looks like to a proctologist.

My Governor constantly invokes Science! to justify her decision to keep us on perpetual lock down. They came up with a set of “gating criteria” to use in the decision to ease our incarceration. Once we met that criteria, they decided that we must maintain in for several weeks before making a decision. Now were being told there will be no complete reopening until the majority of the population of the state is vaccinated, which they project may happen by next March. Masks and distancing will be required until the virus is completely gone. As long as she can keep the money flowing from the fed, she is never going to take her boot off our necks.

It’s cute or sad. You think the people that will and maim a million people a year every year by banning DDT give two hoots about shutting down the economy?

You think voting matters. It’s a joke. The fraud had reached levels that invalidate all elections that matter. Corrupt Soros backed secretaries of state certify the results they want. The margin of fraud was enough to give Clinton the popular vote. This time the margin might not be enough, Biden is suffering from dementia, Harris is deeply unpopular except with the tech class. Plus while Joe is creepy she’s an out and out whore.

It’s not their positions or their ideas or their morals that matter anymore. We’re in a post majority society. Lee Yeuh Kwan not Thomas Jefferson will succeed here.

Biden is transparently an obnoxious and callous totalitarian dotard, assisted by a Machiavellian, would-be dictator-successor in the vile Kamala Harris.

The U.S. needs the Dhimmi-crats’ idiotic, society-upending, job-destroying, prosperity-killing, vanity-grounded totalitarian virus edicts like a cancer patient needs a dose of Bubonic plague.

Biden will be undone by his self-congratulatory, virtue-signaling narcissism, a fitting demise for a Dhimmi-crat, given that narcissism and self-perceived (but, fallacious) notions of moral/intellectual superiority are the primary defining traits of contemporary Dhimmi-crats.

This idiot wants to shut the country down, destroying the lives and livelihoods of millions of people, yet, he indefensibly opposed the common-sense China travel ban on the ridiculous grounds that it was allegedly “xenophobic.”

Biden isn’t merely dumber than a box of rocks — he’s dangerous beyond belief.

So the Muir interview is scheduled to air Sunday evening.

How much you want to bet the initial Twitter reactions will cause ABC to censor or deceptively edit his remarks for broadcast tonight?

Omit, edit or spin … ABC will show us how honest they intend to be in covering Biden until November 3rd. And once ABC leaves the Biden gaffe on the cutting room floor, will FB and Youtube censor the original clip(s)?

And……..we already KNOW what the “Fauxchees” are going to say.

If biden and harris win, our way of life is over. No hyperbole, either. The sick bastards who will get infest our government if these hacks win will rival even obama’s communist and maoist sickos.

What happened to the idea that the POTUS does not have the authority to shut down the economy? That it is up to the governors and local authorities?

guyjones in reply to Pasadena Phil. | August 23, 2020 at 3:09 pm

Funny how the hypocrite Dhimmi-crats gleefully embrace the notion of totally unrestrained Executive power — so long as they’re the only ones who are wielding it, in their alleged, self-perceived sagacity and benevolence.

notamemberofanyorganizedpolicital | August 23, 2020 at 2:42 pm

This is the Democrats AND ALL their allies Ceaușescu moment.

They are canned ALPO already.

Ah, secular religions… quasi-religions (e.g. selective, opportunistic. relativistic) their mortal gods and goddesses. Let us bray.

“Always listen to experts. They’ll tell you what can’t be done, and why. Then do it.” – Lazarus Long

Most of the people I work with have PhD’s and this quote could not be more true. The more specialized their field is the less common sense people have. I wonder sometimes how some of these people find their way home after work because they are so clueless. But they know everything, just ask them.

DaveGinOly in reply to Rusty Bill. | August 24, 2020 at 11:37 am

The first was Heinlein’s riff on Arthur C. Clarke’s First Law:
When a distinguished but elderly scientist states that something is possible, he is almost certainly right. When he states that something is impossible, he is very probably wrong.

If ABC censors that part of the clip or manipulates it to sound like something else, that’s going to become the story, not just on Fox, which the left can assume safely that their base does not see, but also in the WSJ, which has wide circulation and credibility, so my guess is that ABC will just bite the bullet and let Biden be Biden and hope that nobody notices.

And, folks, let’s not play this up for more than it really is. If Biden were President, his handlers’ instinct will be the same as everyone’s after Edmund Ross, which is to do no harm to re-election. People dying could & would be blamed on Trump the way Obama blamed Bush for 8 years for a sluggish continuing bad economy, while a change in the economy from recovery to shutdown crash would fall on the shoulders of Biden and the Democrats.

“The Scientists” have given a pretty risk averse, but acceptable path to reopening: Like holding school in person with common-sense restrictions. AAP wants elementary schools in person, no masks. Less than 5.0% testing positivity is given as the standard to a more extensive reopening. Most of the country is at or heading in that direction.

Democratic politicians and their media enablers don’t report these things and drive people into a panic. New York and New Jersey have the best conditions in the country right now, probably because Covid tore them a new one back in March and April. Their idiot officials ignored “the scientists” back in March, and ignore the same ones now.

    DaveGinOly in reply to Mr85. | August 24, 2020 at 11:45 am

Scientists in Sweden took an entirely different approach. They insisted that schools and businesses remain open, understanding that herd immunity was the goal, and the only way to achieve it was to allow people not particularly endangered by the virus to become infected. So school- and working-age people were allowed to go about their business, while the elderly were protected.

Their curve of infection and deaths ended up looking nearly identical to that of every other European country, almost all of which shut down their economies, demonstrating that the shut downs had no effect on the virus’ spread or its lethality.

Herd immunity should be the goal, because there has never been a successful vaccine against a corona virus; it’s a “don’t hold your breath” situation. Fortunately, it seems that masks and lock downs have limited, if any, effect on the spread of the disease, so we’re going to get to herd immunity despite government’s best efforts to keep us safe while keeping us vulnerable (as they’ve done in New Zealand).

If President Gropy wants scientific answers to executive questions, he should convene a seance to chat with Trofim Lysenko.

Is it really necessary to point out that the federal government lacks the authority to do anything of the sort?

The public health apparat in most states does have considerable authority, however, mostly as a result of the history of nasty communicable diseases (such as smallpox and tuberculosis).

And because state governments are not limited to those enumerated in the U.S. Consititution, of course.

The irony is that the press, academia, and assorted pundits would be going absolutely nuts had Pres. Trump hinted that he had the authority to do this: “He lacks the authority,” they’d shout. Followed by (what else) “Fascism can happen here, it’s happening now, the Capitol-Reichstag, it’s burning!!”

It’s so hard to build, and so easy to destroy.

Joe and Ho’ are destroyers.

I’m pretty sure Jackass Joe would be doing what the Chicom “scientists” tell him to do!

“Yet in holding scientific discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.”
President Eisenhower, farewell address

This is the same address in which he gave his famous warning concerning the “military-industrial complex,” which the liberals of the 1960s and 70s took to heart. They need to be reminded of Ike’s warning in its entirety.

The reason for Joe-the-Puppet and the D..rat Party to shut down the entire USA would NOT be the CCPvirus; that would only be the “excuse” offered. In fact, doing so will make it much easier to redistribute federal money to those who don’t work, to assign the non-working people to live with those who do work or have worked so that all may live the same, to ration food and supplies so that the non-working people get the same as those who work or have worked, to assure that those taxpayers retired from work share what they earned with those who never did, etc. Having traveled in Europe after nations rose up against Russia and freed themselves from Communism, I am acquainted with Communist Russian forced other countries to live – and, worst of all, how Russians were still “living” after the end of the USSR.

GREAT he has no brain AND NOW he shows his NADS ARE GONE? THE SACK IS EMPTY ALSO?????

Ohio Historian | August 24, 2020 at 4:26 pm

He’ll go find a scientist and then tell us that 99.44% of the scientists “agree”. Meanwhile, it will be exactly what his supporters at the Marxist organizations BLM and Antifa want hin to do to crash the US. Joe may claim it is science, but it is politics and leftism.
