Chicago Mayor Lightfoot Won’t Allow Trump’s ‘Troops’ to ‘Terrorize’ the City as 15 Shot at Funeral

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot tweeted that she will not “allow Donald Trump’s troops to come to Chicago and terrorize our residents.”

Timestamp: 6:02 p.m. What happened 28 minutes later? A person shot 15 people at a funeral on the South Side.

Lightfoot tweeted:

Then at 6:30 p.m., people inside a black vehicle shot at those attending a funeral. The attendees returned fire. The car crashed, but the suspects fled on foot.

The injured taken to hospitals remain in serious to critical condition. Paramedics treated a 65-year-old woman on the scene.

Ten victims are women, and five are men.

Police usually assign officers “to funerals for homicide victims.” We do not know if a patrol car was present at this funeral.

However, police were present since it was a large funeral.

This is also one of the worst shootings recently in Chicago:

Last year, 13 people were wounded, four of them critically, in a shooting inside a memorial gathering in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side.In September 2013, 13 people were shot in Cornell Square Park in the city’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. A 3-year-old boy was among the wounded in that shooting.

Funeral shootings:

In October 2018, six people were shot as mourners were leaving a funeral at Bethlehem Star Missionary Baptist Church at 92nd Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. As many as five mourners drew their own weapons and returned fire during the broad daylight attack. The services were for Vantrease “Dooski Tha Man” Criss, a local rapper who was gunned down earlier that month. In November 2012, two men were shot, one of them killed, outside St. Columbanus Church at 71st Street and Prairie Avenue. The shooting took place during a church service for a slain reputed gang member.

Violence has escalated in Chicago, especially since late May after the death of George Floyd:

So far in 2020, Chicago has experienced one of its most violent years in recent memory, especially since late May with the fallout over the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minnesota. Through Sunday, homicides in Chicago were up 51% with 414, compared to 275 at the same time last year, official CPD statistics show. Shootings were also up by 47%.During a 28-day period through Sunday, 116 people were slain in Chicago, the statistics show. That’s up from 40 during the same period in 2019.

We’ve covered the violence:

A Chicago Tribune article time-stamped at 8:02 p.m. shows that Lightfoot slightly changed her tone. At first, she “threatened to sue if President Donald Trump tried to send federal agents into Chicago without permission.”

Then 24 hours later and two hours after the funeral shooting, Lightfoot said: “that the city would be working with federal agents to fight crime but warned that her administration would be vigilant against abuses of power.”

Plus, the administration is only sending in “resources that will plug into existing federal agencies that already work with the city, including the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.”

Lightfoot remains cautious but welcomes “actual partnership.” She won’t allow dictatorship,” “authoritarianism,” or “unconstitutional arrest and detainment of” Chicago residents.”

That did not happen the last time Trump’s administration helped Chicago just after his 2017 inauguration:

That summer, 20 ATF agents were sent to Chicago to help form a task force aimed at cutting the flow of illegal guns in the city and cracking down on people arrested repeatedly on gun-related charges. Among other duties, the group was tasked with examining bullet casings recovered from crime scenes to perform expedited ballistics testing to determine if the casings were expended from the same guns used in other shootings.

The extra agents did not such thing and actually helped officials in Chicago.

(The video says 14, but the police added another victim this morning.)
