Repressive Democrats and ‘Panic Porn’ Media Enable Trump to Run as the “Freedom President”

Repressive Democrats and ‘Panic Porn’ Media Enable Trump to Run as the “Freedom President”

The Frontier Center report: In-depth interviews with participants in The Reopen Movement “reflects growing support among Reopeners for President Trump’s 2020 election when compared to their 2016 vote”

The lockdowns imposed by Governors and local governments, under guidelines issued by the federal government, were widely accepted at first because there was a perceived collective purpose in ‘flattening the curve’ to keep the medical system from being overwhelmed.

As I predicted in mid-March, the government-imposed shutdown of the economy had a shelf life that would run out in May, June at the latest.

That process was accelerated when it became clear that:

(1) the models predicting deaths in the millions that launched the shutdown logic were deeply flawed on the high side,

(2) the worst-case-scenarios didn’t happen in the real world, the curve was flattened,

(3) nursing homes in blue states, resulting from state government mandates that nursing homes accept infected patients, were epicenters of death not reflective of the nation as a whole,

(4) the media engaged in grotesque ‘panic porn’, clearly driven by Trump hatred and an intent to do damage to his reelection prospects,

(5) the mental and physical health consequences of the lockdown grew more severe and obvious, with the healthcare system melting down not from the virus, but from the shutdown of all but emergency services which drained hospitals and medical practices of cash flow,

(6) the unemployment numbers grew to Depression-era levels in a matter of weeks, creating a fissure between people who worked with information and could work from home, and people who worked with people and were unemployed,

(7) the stories of lifetimes devoted to building small businesses being vanquished broke through the media panic, but most of all,

(8) the lockdown restrictions became increasingly arbitrary and vindictive, reflective of power grabs by mostly Democrat government officials. Religious groups were singled out for particularly harsh treatment in comparison to liquor stores and fast food restaurants. Small businesses were shuttered while big box stores remained open. Governors, particularly numerous Democrat Governors, were vindictive and arrogant, refusing to ease the lockdowns until there were protests in the streets and growing civil disobedience. In Michigan, the Governor extended the lockdown out of spite to teach protesters a lesson.

Trump, having supported the national shutdown based on the ‘scientific’ advice that millions would die, fairly early expressed the desire to reopen the economy, suggesting Easter as an aspirational goal. For that, he was excoriated by the ‘panic porn’ media joined by Democrats who saw political opportunity. While backing off Easter, Trump has become the champion for reopening the economy.

As this unfolded, I’ve frequently thought that the November election may be an election over freedom, and intended or not, Trump was positioning himself as the “Freedom President,” the person who advocated for personal and economic freedom against the dictates of Democrat Governors and officials.

This had the potential for some widening of support among the working class, but more likely and important, a motivation for people who supported or were at least willing to support Trump. Enthusiasm is going to be key in November.

This was crystalized in my mind when I saw a meme go as viral as I’ve ever seen something go viral. One of the not-so-secret secrets is that there is a volunteer army of meme-makers who produce content supporting Trump for free. It’s organic and sometimes very effective.

The meme was a video by the Twitter account @mad_liberals, based on a scene from the movie Independence Day (original scene here). The video was tweeted by Trump, and has almost 18 million views for that tweeted video alone, plus many millions more for other tweets of the video. That doesn’t mean 18 million people saw it, since one person could have many views, but clearly millions saw it. It captured that “Freedom President” spirit, and it didn’t cost the Trump campaign a dime.

But still, I didn’t write about it. A feeling, a meme, not enough.

But then I saw a report from Anne Sorock Segal of The Frontier Center. As you may recall, Anne used to write for us and is a Director of the Legal Insurrection Foundation. We have covered many of her research reports over the years. She’s also the person I think better than anyone understands what motivates Trump voters, having predicted Trump’s win in February 2015, before he even was a candidate.

Anne’s report, just issued, is The Reopen Movement: Motivations and Pathways to Support (pdf.)

https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5d16cd949e9f820001d15faf/t/5ec68302d7745c676d7d1aac/1590067974775/TFC+The+Reopen+Movement.pdf

Here’s part of the Introduction that explains the context of The Reopen Movement:

The Reopen the States movement is cropping up in every state as a reaction to government restrictions related to the Coronavirus. The movement includes rallies, messages on face masks, and acts of defiance great and small. It is a protest against restrictions on the right of all Americans to be mobile, work, worship and congregate together, and use private property without government permission. It is growing rather than receding in response to harsh verbal attacks by media and force by government. Some responses are beyond contentious; they are acts of defiance, such as in the example of a mother in Wisconsin who refused to give her name to police who investigated her daughter for playing at a neighbor’s home, or a Texas hair salon owner who was given the choice of apologizing for being selfish, pay a fine and shutdown her salon, or serve jail time for defying the state’s coronavirus restrictions. She chose jail.

Government officials and media say reopen supporters are simply on a wrong timeline—that all Americans want to reopen, but the action will overload hospitals. Others characterize the supporters as selfish, weighing economic concerns too heavily against the concern for human life and suffering. The prevailing response for continued stay-at-home orders and business shutdowns places priority on protecting fearful and vulnerable citizens, and views reopen protesters as reckless, self-interested, or conspiracy theorists.

But is this view of reopen advocates true? Or might their beliefs be a sign of care for others? To what extent are their actions a result of wholly different values and motivations that indicate a very different mindset about our current crisis?

Behavioral research by the New Frontier Center provides a more informed way to understand the motivations of reopen protesters and supporters. Critics of this group are getting it wrong. This report provides insight from the front lines of the reopen movement, and offers a framework to understand what are actually more noble intentions of these advocates for a new orientation around American liberty.

You should read through the entire report, particularly the methodology. This is not a poll or a random survey. It’s in-depth interviews with participants in reopen protests, to understand what motivates them. It’s similar in methodology to the report Anne did about what motivates Legal Insurrection readers, “Deep Values” Profile of core Legal Insurrection readers.

Here are the key findings from Anne’s Reopen Movement report:

The research reveals Reopeners enter into the movement to gain two types of insight, starting with self-knowledge. This includes testing and measuring their own courage and mental strength. Rather than primarily focusing on immediate political victory, reopen protesters report that they are focused on building their own character and courage, and on a belief that these strengths may be needed in an uncertain future.

The second insight they seek is true information about the sanctity of their rights in the present climate, which they can understand best by testing those rights. They want to know exactly how significant the erosion of individual liberties has become, and how distanced they are from living in a Constitutionally governed nation.

Contrary to the common narrative about their motivations, reopen advocates are not focused primarily on their jobs or the economy. Their rally signs say “let us work,” but this is focused on an abstract notion rather than a selfish desire. They are concerned about the concept of government barring its citizens from working, and the effect this has on their neighbors and community. Over the course of 50 hour-long in-depth interviews, Reopeners described their motivation to help others through the shutdowns in one of three ways: (1) advocating for those hurt financially or “mentally”; (2) instilling courage for those unsure how to fight back, and; (3) modeling behavior and thought processes for those who disagree, or for those who are unsure how to read the situation.

Reopeners see “petit dictators” amassing power by the minute and destroying the foundations of American freedom. They identify five distinct realms of an emerging dictatorial culture: science elites, technology censors, state governments, national media, and the Hollywood elite.

Is this the Tea Party 2.0? Not really according to Anne, but it is an increasingly pro-Trump movement:

… most notably that the reopen movement is not the “Tea Party 2.0.” In fact, the large majority of Reopeners never attended a Tea Party rally, and a large minority did not support the Tea Party movement. The survey also reflects growing support among Reopeners for President Trump’s 2020 election when compared to their 2016 vote. The protesters predominantly identify as Christian, half of whom have no denominational affiliation and the other half of whom are split evenly among evangelical Protestants, mainline Protestants, and Catholics.

My takeaway is that The Reopen Movement presents Trump an opportunity to motivate his base and maybe even pick up some votes.

Will Trump run as the “Freedom President”? That’s a theme I see emerging more and more every day in messaging, both official and from the meme-maker volunteer army.

Petit dictators or Petty dictators?

Kristi Noam in SD had a parade of celebratory support.
Here in Wyo, Guestapo Gordon got protests.
Those are the deep red states. The blue states?

Trump is hitting the right buttons. Open churches – if Abortion clinics are “essential”.

Biden (or those who think for him) could get ahead, but I think the trope will be a return to lots of factories producing everything HERE, locally, with small businesses and well paying blue collar jobs. And cancel debt, even by a universal bankruptcy access.

There is a polarization in any case. Sensible opening v.s. Commisar closure. Trump is on the former side. Even in Georgia.

Facts are stubborn things. Like the results and policies during the last few weeks.

    Any polarization is entirely fake.

    See Professor’s point 4.

    4) the media engaged in grotesque ‘panic porn’,

clearly driven by Trump hatred and

an intent to do damage to his reelection prospects,

    BY ABORTING THE GOOD ECONOMY.

Democrats need millions of poor desperate people who are dependent on the state. These people are susceptible to the lies progressive fascists tell. They want to keep the economy shutdown for as long as possible.

At this point, there is a third option. There’s no need for “sensible” opening – just open, period. The word “sensible” implies there’s something we can do to control the spread of the virus further. Not only can’t we, but just about everyone has been exposed at this point anyway. It’s over. It’s been effectively over since Easter.

Something that I find very interesting about this article is that there is now a predicted end to the pandemic, in the northern hemisphere, on November 11. This a corona virus. Such a virus reacts to seasonal changes much like influenza. Higher temperatures and humidity levels tend to suppress the transmission of the virus. So, we should see a reduction in cases during the summer and an increase in the winter. Yet, this “model” predicts that the virus will disappear in the winter. Incredible. It would happen right after the Democrats defeat Trump for President, too. Incredible.

The COVID virus situation was nothng more than a terrorist terror campaign waged against the world populace through the news media. And, it is still going on. The media reports NO good news concerning the virus. The numbers can nit be believed. The top health official in NJ publicly admitted that every death, which shows an exposure to COVID-19 on testing is classified as a death due to COVID. Widely used medications, which may actually work in treating the virus are claimed to be ineffective and the populous has been discouraged from using them. According to the media, politicians and medical experts, the only thing that works are draconian measures which destroy the world economy. This is all a SCAM.

I agree that the issue of freedom vs. soft tyranny ought to be the defining issue of the 2020 campaign, but I’m not convinced that we can win on that. We live in a profoundly “chickified” (as Rush Limbaugh puts it–I use a much stronger term) society that regards any risk at all as too great, and it appears that such view is the majority opinion. Witness recent Detroit Free Press poll showing 64% in Michigan approving Gov. Whitmer’s lockdown efforts.

I fear this will continue to metastasize, and under a Biden administration we will have a judiciary that will create a “right not to be offended” (not universally held, however). The Thought Police are in our future, and we will have to correct this by means other than the ballot box.

Keeping people alive so they can live their life is way bigger than keeping them alive but interned, to “live” half their lives.

When they shout down n disparage everything that looks like it might help people get on with their lives, you get the impression that squelching your little life — perhaps with a boot to the masked face, forever — is the real point.

It’s astonishing, the speed with which Dhimmi-crat governors and other apparatchiks resorted to heavy-handed, sanctimonious totalitarianism, in response to the Chinese Communist Wuhan virus. All delivered with a heaping dose of narcissistic sanctimony and virtue-signaling theatrics, naturally. Economic and societal well-being be damned.

The Dhimmi-crats are single-handedly responsible for the widespread economic damage caused by their histrionic virus response, which response is driven not by rationality and science, but, by anti-Trump hatred and venom.

And imagine how all this fear has been created out of an inability of many to accept the risk of a disease that has a survivability rate of greater than 99.5%. Even this number is low when you consider how the virus attacks the elderly, usually those with pre-existing conditions. It is driven even higher when one considers that the number is greatly affected by the death rates in many blue states where the governors demanded those elderly who tested positive for the virus be forced into nursing homes regardless of whether or not they were equipped to protect those there who were healthy with the result being 60 -80+% of all fatalities in the state occurred there.
    >
Clearly this is fear porn driven by the media in the hopes of pinning all the blame on Trump – even when he took the correct action that the media found racist and xenophobic. The longer this goes on, the more convinced I become that the Left is working as hard as they can to destroy the economy simply to use the failing economy as a tool to defeat Trump in the fall. Imagine, the hate for Trump, greed for power, and the utter lack of any redeeming value for those willing to destroy so many lives, and even the country, just to defeat Trump.

BierceAmbrose | May 24, 2020 at 10:12 pm

If we slow the plague n learn nothing, the same number of people die, just slowe. The point is really buying some time to learn what to do about the plague.

— Epidemiologists want to put people in categories to predict what’s gonna happen to masses of them.

— Clinicians care about how to get from a worse category to a better one, for the guy in front of them.

— Who’s job is it to figure out better responses?

People who will lock themselves in their homes for a couple months when that’s the best, vague idea, can do whatever else we figure out. But having been so insistently wrong, n stubborn about it, the “leadership” has guaranteed nobody’s gonna listen to them any more. And more people will die who didn’t have to. It’s like culling the herd was the point.

DEM Death Camps are called Nursing Homes?????????

gospace in reply to BierceAmbrose. | May 24, 2020 at 11:42 pm

Meantime, even though it’s been known apparently now for decades that low Vitamin D blood level worsens respiratory diseases, Vitamin D level is still not routinely checked, and the medical establishment discourages people from taking supplements unless testing suggests they need them. Testing that’s not routinely done…

We even know the main populations with low Vitamin D levels. Old people, especially those confined in nursing homes. Who are dying from Covid out of proportion to their numbers. Blacks. Who are dying from covid out of proportion to their numbers. Diabetics- who are dying from covid out of proportion to their numbers.

Maybe, just maybe, there’s a connection.

Don’t underestimate the anger of GOP voters towards GOP rats: it is just as motivating.

Once again Trump is several steps ahead of the Trump haters.

Where have you been for the past three months?

Every night in our little town there is the “Howl for Healthcare Workers” exercise. At first I thought it was kind of cool, now it seems like another annoying platitude. Such as we are all in this together, in these difficult times, and stay safe. Screw that I want to stay free, not safe.

Now I go out on the deck at 8PM and scream at the top of my lungs “I’m Mad as Hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore”. I haven’t noticed anyone else following my lead yet, but it sure feels good.

Imagining Trump giving an “I have a dream” speech … 😉

Dem heads exploding would be like the 4th of July. 😀

Republicans swept the four open seats on Staunton City Council in the 2020 local elections, a first in recent memory in a city that has been a bellwether for Virginia Democrats.

I’m happy to let the others go first with the reopening and I support their rights. I think that some of the lock it down folks do not face the same economic hardships as small business owners who are having a tough time right now. Let’s get through this, rebuild our economy any keep our vital jobs here in the USA.

caseoftheblues | May 25, 2020 at 9:22 am

The lamestream media are going on and on about the increase in cases trying to pin in on openings and to scare us back into our homes…NEVER mentioning the tenfold increase in testing that are the actual reason for those numbers. Oh yah also not mentioning the vast vast majority have no symptoms.

I am p/leased to see growing public awareness that democratic governors–like Porky Pritzer in Illinois (America’s shit hole state) have deliberately prolonged the economic chaos to lay the groundwork for the socialist paradise.

They do panic porn; we’ll do anger porn. When I hear anybody talk about all those unemployed who lost their jobs, I tell them “They didn’t lose their jobs: they were thrown out of work by the government.”

The left overplayed its hand. Let’s hope to see both them and their crooked enabling MSM press eviscerated in the coming backlash.

On Saturday I wrote our pastor, who is a Lear anti-Trumper and a Democrat. I CCed the other 3 Senior Pastors. When I asked him about reopening, he replied that they would wait for the California authorities to OK reeling.

I replied that the President of the United States says Church is essential. Never in my lifetime has a President made such a strong statement toward faith. That I believed he should take it as a sign from God that it was time to reopen.

He did not reply.

Obviously you need to join in fellowship led by someone who subscribes to standing up for your 1rst Constitutional rights with the same conviction as yourself.

As we saw in 2015-2016, this nation is horrendously polarized. Trump, an outsider, was elected President and, even though the rest of the government had not changed at all, the progressive, liberal left melted down. We had riots, leftists attacking virtually everyone else, lawfare against those not aligned with the left and virulent, fallacious media attacks in the same vein. Now we see the arbitrary suspension of the civil rights of the populace due to a flu-like virus. This has made things even worse. It has levered the gap between those wanting to live in a Big Brother society and those who want to exercise the most freedom possible, over their own lives.

So, what happens in November? Things are at the breaking point, in this country. If Trump wins, the cry will be that we are all doomed. Does anyone doubt that this will cause massive civil unrest and violence, by the Left? If Trump loses, this will be viewed by the those who cherish freedom as being a bridge too far, as the Democrats will immediately begin to impose measures which will make it impossible for nearly 50% of the population to live their lives normally. Does anyone doubt that there will be civil unrest and likely violence from these people? There is a civil war being waged in this country right now. So far, it has not spilled over into widespread violence. But, that is not likely to last. Look for it to increase over the summer and all bets are off after the November elections.

Here in Kansas, the Democrat governor Laura Kelly jumped on the emergency bandwagon early. Closed the schools, issued stay-at-home orders and closed a wide array of businesses. It was evident from day one that she had no clue how to handle the situation. Nor did she modify her orders when the Covid pandemic failed to deliver the intended number of sick and dead Kansans.

On Friday, the Kansas legislature voted to limit Governor Kelly’s future declaration of emergency powers.

If it can happen in Kansas, it’s already happening everywhere else.
