Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx survived her primary on Tuesday despite the mess she made of actor Jussie Smollett’s case.
Foxx came under fire in March 2019 when her office suddenly dropped charges against Smollett.
Smollett faced disorderly charges “for allegedly staging a phony attack and claiming he was the victim of a hate crime.”
Foxx also faced criticism when texts showed she communicated with Smollett’s family before the charges. More backlash happened when the media discovered Foxx still communicated with her team after her recusal.
We all know the workings of Illinois politics, especially in Chicago. I personally do not believe she won the election fair and square. The responses to this tweet express the disgust.
Foxx beat her main competitor Bill Conway, 48.1% to 32.5%:
Bill Conway, a former assistant state’s attorney and Navy veteran whose campaign was bankrolled with $10.5 million by his billionaire father, torched Foxx for months with a double-barreled ad campaign aimed at the Smollett debacle and her acceptance of fundraising help from indicted Ald. Edward Burke (14th).The ads hurt Foxx, but Conway was never able to make a convincing case for himself based on his thin record of public service.Conway could have benefitted greatly from a newspaper editorial board or two blessing his candidacy, but all the city’s major papers found his credentials for the job lacking.
