Trump asks Congress for $2.5 billion to fight coronavirus
Given the potential for a sustained coronavirus pandemic to hurt the world economy, and impact the November election, combating the virus is a top priority for President Donald Trump.
The Trump administration is sending to the U.S. Congress a budget request for $2.5 billion to fight coronavirus, the White House said on Monday.
More than $1 billion of the money would go toward developing a vaccine, the White House said.
“Today, the Administration is transmitting to Congress a $2.5 billion supplemental funding plan to accelerate vaccine development, support preparedness and response activities and to procure much needed equipment and supplies,” Rachel Semmel, a spokeswoman for the White House Office of Management and Budget, said in a statement.
Labs in the US will start looking for the new coronavirus this week
The US now has 53 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 19 new patients diagnosed over the weekend. With the exception of Patient #1 in Seattle (who was treated successfully and released), there has been no update on the other American cases. It is important to note that 39 of the 53 cases are the Diamond Princess cruise ship evacuees.
Six public health labs in the US plan to start monitoring the general population for the new coronavirus this week.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that the risk of the virus still remains low for the general population. But activating the disease surveillance network will allow the CDC and other public health officials to find any undetected virus circulating through the country.
“It’s important because right now, all the efforts are focused on people who have a direct link to China, or a direct link to lab-confirmed cases. There’s no system in place to detect low-level transmission that might be under the radar,” says Edward Belongia, the director of the Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Population Health at the Marshfield Clinic Research Institute.
The six labs — in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Chicago, and New York City — are already part of the nationwide influenza surveillance network, and they conduct regular monitoring of all types of viruses.
Seven now dead in Italian coronavirus outbreak, and Europeans clamoring for….border security
Late last week, we reported on a COVID-19 outbreak in Northern Italy. Currently, 7 people are dead from the virus, and hundreds more are infected.
The virus is now causing Europeans to start clamoring for border security.
Seven deaths and 229 infections in Italy has fanned panic in neighbouring countries and sparked a clamour for governments to clamp down on border checks.
But despite warning of a ‘moderate to high risk’ of more clusters sprouting up on European soil, Brussels today confirmed it would not be freezing Schengen arrangements ‘for the moment’.
The 26 Schengen states – including Italy – have abolished border controls, meaning people can pass seamlessly from country to country.
Italy’s northern regions of Lombardy and Veneto have suffered the brunt of the nation’s outbreak, and have been added to a global list with China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and South Korea as coronavirus hotbeds.
Some 55,000 residents have been placed under lockdown, with internal police checkpoints, schools shut and public events axed, including the popular Venice carnival.
As officials in Rome firefight the country’s epidemic, a former minister has urged the European Commission to temporarily scrap Schengen.

Coronavirus has now ‘peaked’ in China, according to the World Health Organisation which praised Beijing’s robust measures to insulate the outbreak.
While the number of cases continues to rise – surpassing 77,000 – the rate at which new infections are sprouting up has started decelerating.
But while officials firefighting the epidemic in China can take solace in the slow-down, other countries have been warned to brace for a ‘potential pandemic’ as the virus continues to spill out across the globe.

Hopefully, border control. The numbers look pretty tame to me. It’s the government-sponsored panic that appears to be the real threat of this virus. I think Professor Jacobson has it right. This is more of a political crisis than a health crisis.
The world is in panic over 80 deaths, most of them in China, for a flu that is producing numbers that are less scary than the usual annual flu? Are they exaggerating the risk of contagion to make it look like we are at the beginning rather the late stages of this thing? The numbers don’t warrant the current level of panic.
80? Even the official chinese numbers are several thousand dead, which says more than that have shuffled off their mortal coil.

Of these confirmed cases, 32,757 have been resolved: 30,042 by the patient recovering, and 2,715 by the patient dying. That’s an 8.3% death rate for cases resolved to date. Hopefully, the vast majority of unresolved cases will end in patient recovery, but the current death rate cannot be responsibly ignored.
In comparison, the CDC reports there were 45,000,000 cases of flu in the US during the 2017-18 flu season, the worst outbreak in recent years. Of these cases, 61,000 resulted in death, for a death rate of 0.14%:

China has not effectively shut down its economy at great cost for no good reason. The death rate for COVID-19 could be nearly two orders of magnitude greater than that for influenza, and is taking a toll amongst the country’s health care providers.
Trump is politically vulnerable on this issue, and rightfully so. Naturally, Democrats are going to attack him no matter what, and he’s between a rock and a hard place on this issue. If he is too proactive he risks inciting panic; if he isn’t proactive enough his administration makes stupid decisions like transporting infected citizens from the Diamond Princess and doing so in a manner that jeopardized many uninfected individuals.
Italy is now ranked third in coronavirus infection deaths with only 7. And those are being blamed by after a hospital in Milan reportedly helped the spread of the disease by failing to adhere to protocols.

And where is the most intense political action focuses? Attacking the current government! If this was truly a global epidemic threat, ou would think we could drop the politics and focus on stopping the spread of that flu? Nope. And the UN is leading the way.
What we need are honest assessments based on comparative numbers for annual and historic flu infections. Since the politicians only want to play the blame game, maybe we should lock them up somewhere and recruit some qualified adults to tell us what is really going on.

That is worldwide. the current death toll from influenza a and b stands at just over 13000, in the US alone. And, nobody cares. 650,000 people die from influenza every year, worldwide, and nobody notices. Schools aren’t closed. public events are not cancelled and no one is quarantined. So, what is the deal with COVID-19? Is it any deadlier than influenza? It does not appear to be. So, exactly WHAT is the crisis here?
US count so far: of the 77 reported infections, 40 are from the Princess cruise ship. Of the other 37, only two contracted their infection for other Americans. Only two have died, both contracted their infections while in China.

This virus is not one you would want to get, but the worry seems over the top.
The people at biggest risk are the elderly, the very young, and those with respiratory issues, diabetics, and those with heart problems. In other words the same people who are at higher risk from every flu and virus that goes around.
I do think China is trying to hide this being something cooked up from the level facility for diseases, potentially a bio-weapon, but all the numbers of those who got this compared with those who died from it come out to about 2.5-3 % the same as every virus and communicable disease that goes around areas.
We are developing a vaccine. I just don’t think this will live up to the hype the propaganda wing is pushing, just like the swine flu of years ago.
The people going into panic over this seems to be led by fear mongering, which means the left are trying to ramp up the fear, and harm the economy.
It’s not a hoax, its just more of the Russia collusion type hyping up for political gains than it being the next black plague.

If we are trying to figure out the mortality differential between coronavirus and flu, don’t we need mortality of the coronavirus in China vs the mortality of the flu in China rather than the mortality rate of the coronavirus in China vs the Mortality rate of the flu in the US? I imagine the flu mortality is much higher in China than in the us for reasons that would also boost the mortality of the coronavirus.
