Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow immediately mentioned the Bolton manuscript without specifics, but we all knew what he was talking about.
The defense team still has 22 hours left to present their case.
Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz and Ken Starr will address the Senate today.
We do not know yet if the defense attorneys will bring up The New York Times story about former National Security Advisor John Bolton. A new book of his claims that Trump ordered Bolton “to keep military aid to Ukraine frozen in a bid to coerce political favors.”
However, the story strengthened the moderate Republicans to push the chamber to call for witnesses. We knew Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Maine Sen. Susan Collins, and Utah Sen. Mitt Romney leaned in that direction.
Collins and Romney said this morning they definitely want witnesses.
Collins released this statement:
Romney told reporters that he wants Bolton to testify. He also thinks other GOP senators will join his demand as well.
The Democrats need at least Republican senators to pass a motion to call witnesses.
